Well, I was gonna say porn, cocaine, and Jameson....

I'm thinking tea, a book, some chocolate, and a mug.

It depends on what it's for. Is it a get well soon care package? Is your friend a member of the military? A new parent?

Hey! I like this thread.
Ive made care packages and received them.
Both are good.

Right now, in my care package
I would like some tulips, a tin
of lapsang souchong tea, some
take-out Chinese, a deck of cards,
hand warmers, and a blanket.
Im feeling homey right now.

If you could arrange for Jem
to deliver it, it would be ever more fab.

Yeah. Well play poker.
Bring some brewskis for the Chinese
and your gold spray paint.

And if you could arrange to come with Jem
it would be ever more fab.

Care packages of that nature seem to be pretty personal things. So, naturally we can't get too specific.

In general terms I would go with:

Favourite foods.
Some stuff everyone needs (favourite cologne/lotion something similar).
Pictures of her/the two of you.
Some kind of a memento to remind her of a good time together with you.
If you're motivated enough, go back to a place special to the both of you and take new pictures to send. Even without her there it will still be special.

Chocolate, always chocolate, and make it good chocolate. For example:
.

You can do themed care packages--say she's a tealover. Do a care package with a variety of teas, tea accessories (tea infuser, teaspoon, mug, whatever), and a box of shortbread. Coffee? Variety of coffees and a mug. Puzzles? A whole boatload of different kinds of puzzles. Maybe she's into knitting? Yarns, a knitting book, and a size of needles she doesn't have.

Ultimately, the care package isn't about us, but who you are sending it to. And if you don't feel like spending too much $, baked goods are generally appreciated.

Monkie makes AWESOME packages.

That said, I've done the following:

~Hand-painted small flower pot, small baggie of organic soil, forget-me-not seeds.
~Word games (large print, har har) books, a really giant pencil, and a bookmark.
~Assorted teas and/or coffees, a hand painted mug or funny one, and the Splenda packets with sayings on them.
~Bittersweets, a box of kleenex, chocolate, and a good book for a friend who was recently post-breakup.
~Raid on the $1.00 travel size bins at Target or Walmart to make a pamper-box.
~Small canvases (2" x 2") painted with single words that were inside jokes. I did pairs of four or six.
~Microfleece blanket, thick socks, can of Muir Glen chicken noodle soup, a beanie, and mittens for a sickie friend up north.
~Funnily decorated flip flops (glitter, FTW!), tube of sunscreen, funky sunglasses and a cheesy visor for one of my snowed-in friends.

I used to collect little things that were on sale or whatnot at Ross or Michaels, etc, whenever I went out and about and at the end of a month, I'd tuck the randomness in a box and mail it out just for a smile. Things that reminded me of that person, greeting cards that would crack me up (and sent blank ones for her to send out), etc. It's fun.

How about something that she may not be able to get where she's at? I had a friend that had moved and in a conversation they mentioned they couldn't find a Big Red(Cream soda) anywhere. Sure it sounds like a lame gift but it was much appreciated.

Hmm, that's a good idea Reese. There's this Aero Eggs at my school that I've never seen anywhere else, I'll send her a few of those in the package.

Make a tie-blanket out of fleece.

Instructions are super easy to make and find on the interwebz. Note: my favorite size to make is 2 1/2 yards in length. Makes it long enough to cover someone (tall,) from over head to over toes with enough leftover for a dog or to squish up with like a teddy bear.

...Then wrap up above mentioned items inside it.

I can only get Aero Chocolate in two places, UK and Newfoundland when I stop for gas. If somebody sent me Aerochocolate in the USA I'd probably carve an ice statue in their image. Do it!

Yeah that stuff. In Russia is called Vuzdushen schokolad, in Bulgaria its LZ chocolate (LZ being their country code). Awesome stuff that I horde and stockpile.

I know what I'd want from a care package: a mail-order bride, and maybe some cashews. It's tough to go wrong with cashews.
