Anyone have experience with Tempurpedic mattresses or just memory foam in general?

I must get a new mattress. It's now to the point that I wake myself up during the night when rolling over because of back pain. I've resorted to my couch for several months now - both me and my dog lol.

Anyone have experience with Tempurpedic / memory foam? I'm not sure I could swing the mattress right now but I'm willing to buy a mattress pad for starters. But I'm wondering if it will just be one big sponge for bacteria and such. Also wondering if they get flat fairly quick -

If you have a problem rolling or moving a lot in your sleep, the foam will fix it. It does absorb a lot of motion, so sex might be more work (I'm not sure if it would be better or not). There is a lot of different types of memory foam, but the medium/hard density isn't hard enough for me. I don't know what level of softness I want is though. It is too soft now and isn't good if I sleep on my back, and I can't sleep on my stomach because I would end up like this V (ok, maybe not that dramatic). I added a strip to the middle, so now it is 8" at the ends and 12" in the middle (This is an cheap unofficial one though, the brand name one could be different)

Having 2" or so on top would work with a mattress underneath.

I would also recommend you buy it when it is warm enough to leave it outside for 2-3 days to expand and air out.

I am not an expert on this at all, I can sleep on concrete, sand, dirt, couches, chairs, car seats, etc.

One more thing, you will stay warmer with it, maybe to the point where it is too hot. That isn't a problem for me now, but I don't live in Phoenix with no AC anymore.

I don't have a memory foam mattress but I do have a memory foam pillow. It does contour quite a bit, you do sink into it. Overall I have to say it is the best pillow I have used to date. I don't know what density it is but the pillow is much heavier than any pillow I've used. Not sure how that translates to a mattress. I've had it for about 2 years now and no issues with flatness, it still springs right back within a minute or so of me getting up. I don't think the bacteria would be any worse than a regular mattress.

Sounds good so far. I like to sink. Soft is good. My couch is a rather large leather and I sink in pretty well which is probably why I sleep like a baby and wake up pain free. But my bed - forget it. For maybe 4 years, I've been trying to make it work with a feather bed topper. But it gets pretty tiring when you have to virtually remove the sheets every night just to fluff the bed before getting in to go to sleep. So most nights I don't bother and just hop in. It's a good feather bed too. It's just not working.

I don't have any of the problems you mentioned but I watched an Oprah show about bedbugs aka dust mites that totally freaked me out so I threw out all my pillows, washed my down comforter and blankets in hot water and extra detergent, and vacuumed my mattress. Not that I had any bedbugs to begin with but I wanted to be sure (you can't see them and they can happen to anyone that has dust in their house...and that's everyone).

I decided to pamper myself while I was at it and bought a 2" Memory Foam Mattress Pad on sale at Kohl's...it's pure heaven. I shopped at Sam's and TJMaxx for new pillows that are just right for my liking (pure down was too soft so I got faux down) and shopped there for new wrinkle-free sheets & pillowcases (400 thread count). On top I placed my pure down comforter and lightweight cotton blanket.

The Memory Foam Pad came with a good zippered soft cotton cover that also has an attached elasticized part that fits around the edges of the mattress....so there's no moving around. That goes directly on the mattress, then a quilted mattress cover on top of that (the zippered cover and quilted cover protect the foam from any bacteria), then the bottom sheet, then the top sheet, then the down comforter, then the lightweight cotton blanket, then finally the bedspread.

You're not sleeping directly on the Memory Foam Pad. There are 3 layers of covers between you and the foam pad (zippered cover, quilted cover, bottom sheet).

Good solid advice! I believe I'm on it for sure now lol.

I have a thing for cheap jersey sheets. To me, they feel so good on my skin and well, they're cheap! I must have 4 sets at least lol. I alternate with one set I have though that's 400ct.

When exactly was this sale at Kohl's? And can you link me to exactly what you purchased? lol

My friend has a full memory foam mattress and while I haven't slept on it, that thing is comfy as hell to lay on.

I used a pad for roughly 3 years that was stacked on a normal egg crate foam. I recently took it off because the years of abuse had taken their toll. I'd still be using it but it had ripped and gotten soft and the top layer was starting to wrinkle and bits would flake off when I changed sheets. I think it was due to it drying out or maybe friction. It didn't seem to get very dirty and I sprayed it with some lysol every now and then. With all the sheets I had between myself and the foam, I doubt anything ever touched it. I'm definitely going to buy another because I haven't slept well since I took it off.

I had one of these on my bed for 5 or so years... really awesome! I sleep great with it. I need to get another now that I've got a bigger bed.

try to get one that is at least \4 lb memory foam, the denser foams are a lot more supportive. and comfortable. a lot of the cheaper memory foam pads you see in stores are 2lb

I paid $139 for a queen size but it was originally $339. I bought 3 of them at the store and some other things that came to just over $500. So the cashier gave me $100 instore credit on top of the sale price. My purchase was just before Christmas and was not online. The link above is the same sale I think but it's over tomorrow (sunday 1/3/10 is the last day?)

I'm looking at this one which is a little cheaper. It's 3 lb memory foam but the rating is still high.

I slept on Sealy's version of the Tempur-pedic for several years.
I missed it incredibly when I moved out and am looking forward to it again
as I'm moving back in. It eliminates "hot spots" on my hips and shoulders
that I tend to have trouble with. And if there's another person getting in
or out of bed or rolling around, the only thing that clues you in is the sheets
moving. It's about 2.5 years old and it has settled a bit, but I think it's more
because he is bigger than I am and "broke in" his side. And then changed
sides with me. They're miserable for about 2 weeks if you're not heavy
enough or not in it enough to do the "breaking in". I had 4 inches of standard
foam on my old mattress and have slept on those with the toppers and
nothing really compares to the whole mattress. It's the bomb.
But, if you can't afford the whole set, get the thickest topper you can find
as they WILL settle a bit where you lay most. Then it'll feel like an air mattress
where you hit the floor.

I've been considering a Tempurpedic for a while now but I'm not sure if it' going to be firm enough for me. We have a pillow top right now and it's too soft for me and way too hot. A Tempurpedic is probably going to be even worse on the heat side and that's a huge concern for me as I hate being hot when I sleep. The wife likes warm and soft, I like firm and cold. Don't want a sleep number though because it's just an expensive air mattress and the divider in the middle is horrible design.

I love my Tempurpedic. I tend to have issues sleeping well due to back problems and whatnot, but I have no problems on the Tempurpedic. I sleep like a rock on it. My boyfriend (who is considerably heavier than me) says it's the only mattress he's slept on that has allowed him to sleep on his back all night - its density actually keeps him from moving around too much, too, so he doesn't disturb me in his sleep, either.

We have a 4" high-density memory foam topper. It'll turn any crappy mattress into pure bliss. My mother obtained one soon after I bought mine, and it was life-changing for her.
She got one for the guest room bed, so when we visited over Christmas it was amazing sleep.

We were given a thinner 2" low-density memory foam topper as a wedding gift. We have it on our futon couch/guest bed. While it makes sleeping much, much nicer, it doesn't compare to the 4" high-density foam on our bed.

The memory foam definitely does not dissipate body heat quickly... when I was using it I put a couple layers of sheets or mattress covers in the summer time, and that helped immensely

I know on overstock a while back I saw a 4lb density 4inch "cool memory foam" topper... was a bit curious about it, but never enough to pull the trigger on it. supposedly it dissipates body heat much more quickly.

Did this topic, by any chance, come about by that new "Ask me about my tempur-pedic" ad?

I just saw this commercial last night, and then I recalled seeing this thread in passing a few days ago; it seems both this topic and the ad's aim are the same, detailing what the commercial was bartering to me: find out about tempur-pedic from your (rich, comfy, loafer-wearing) friends' experience with their own.

lol no - haven't seen that one yet.

The last commercial I saw for Tempurpedic had a bed out in the middle of the country or something with a couple snuggling on it while the sun rose. I mean, like folks receiving cars for gifts, who doesn't have a bed in a meadow?

It arrived today. Props to Overstock for shipping so fast.

It's heavy! Wasn't expecting that. And holy compacted material! It's folded so tightly that I can't unfold it completely. Says to leave it out for a few days so it goes back to it's original shape before putting on the bed for sleeping. The feel of it is pretty interesting. Very nice and squishy, yet firm.

I'll update again once I've slept on it. I'll be really happy if it's sleep'able tomorrow night lol.

It's already back in shape. And the site mentioned something about a possible odor but there's only a slight chemical smell if you put your nose right up to it.

I'm still going to wait until at least tomorrow night to see if it gets any squishier than it is now. So far so good.

in the winter time mine seemed firmer untill I had laid on it for a few minutes and it started to warm up some... I thnk the squishiness is partly heat related.

ENJOY!

makes me really jealous.... I need to get one that fits on my bigger bed! I loooooved sleeping on the memory foam! I think I might get one as an early bday present to myself

Like I had said earlier in the thread, I've been using my couch as a bed for months now. It's been comfortable enough but I do indeed miss sprawling out and sleeping on the diagonal - a benefit of being single lol.

As an entomologist, I can't help but correct this.

Bedbugs are in the order hemiptera, and do actually bite you. They feed on blood generally, and ARE NOT associated with dust.
Bedbug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dust mites are not insects at all (mites are arachnids), and do not bite in any way. They are microscopic. They can however contribute to allergies, and I have heard they can literally fill a mattress over time, along with the microscopic dust and other small particles that penetrate the mattress material.
House dust mite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've been talking to my wife about replacing our 10 year old mattress. Maybe we'll get a tempurpedic as well.

I had a Tempurpedic a few years ago, and it was definitely too warm, even with the room quite cool. Hot on one side, cool on the other. I didn't hate it, but never really liked it either.

Then three years ago I got a king size Select Comfort, and I just love it! Yes, it's "an expensive air mattress" but so what? It's also much more than that. It's infinitely adjustable for firmness with a remote control. Each side separately. If I want a cloud soft mattress one night and rock hard the next, I can have that. Or anywhere in between. Or one side firm, and the other soft. Like having two different mattresses. It's neutral in temperature. I do sometimes notice the divider in the middle, but it has never been a problem. That's the price you pay for having two adjustable firmnesses. (Is that a word??)

Another real plus is that it's easy to give Sleep Number a good thorough try, since most Radisson hotels use Sleep Number beds. If I had been able to spend a couple of nights on the Tempurpedic, I never would have bought one.

I've got a memory foam topper which helps loads with my back, definatly worth the investment. Spend the most money you can, there is a difference in exactly how much of the memory foam you get compared to more standard foam underneath.

The topper stank to high heaven for a few days too, but now smells of nothing, i think it was just the factory smell lingering on.

I want a full mattress, but can't afford it

Ok - I've slept on it. Took a 2 hour nap today. I'm an extremely happy customer.

I set it all up this afternoon - even flipped my mattress myself. Thought I'd need help but I was that determined to test out this topper dealie. First thing I noticed was how the bed didn't move when I got in. Normally the mattress wobbles and such but there was none of that. It was like I just sunk in a big gel pack or something. Very cool.

When rolling over, again, the bed doesn't move. I like that. Without the topper, my elbows dig into the springs. None of that now. And the topper just conforms around me like a big hug lol.

I was worried about this heat thing a few people mentioned. I keep my house cold, especially the bedroom, as I'm more comfortable that way. Especially while sleeping. Granted I was only in the bed for a couple hours, I didn't have any issues with getting hot or anything.

Slept like a baby. Slept hard. And woke up with zero pain. And I felt rested, like after a good nap. I get good naps on my couch but never in my bed. Got one today though.

I'm a serious night owl. But with this 'new bed,' I can't f'ing wait to go to sleep. Everyone, get a memory foam topper if you can't swing an entire mattress. It's worth it. Only thing to test now is how well it does over time. Hopefully it won't start to lose shape in a year or something. That would suck.

Yay happy sleep!
