Do you drink alone?

Alcoholics don't count :expressionless:

No really, do you? I do sometimes, but it's usually if I've had a bad day and need to relax, or I've been wound up and need to slow down. Same diff, really..

Anyways, as I sit here with my sam adams winter lager (highly recommended!), I ponder how utterly shitty my work day has been, and that sore throat and general fatigue I managed to catch didn't help anything. Still, I had a few laughs with some coworkers, got offered a job with a guy that moonlights as a consultant, and had some good food, even if it did sit out for 10 hours yesterday and lost a little taste. lol.

So anyways, I drink maybe once every few weeks, and of those times I drink alone 1 out of...8 times, or so.

Slyboots 11-28-2009 02:06 AM

I rarely if ever drink just because alcoholism runs in my family and I don't wish to know myself when I'm just utterly trashed. When I'm having a bad day, my mind wonders enough into the regions of my head that I don't like visiting. I can't imagine how bad it would be when I'm having a bad day and I'm just drinking my sorrows away.

I like to keep company when i drink and in a good mood. Good times are had by all :)

Charlatan 11-28-2009 02:18 AM

All the time.

LoganSnake 11-28-2009 02:34 AM

Never. I rarely drink with company too.

ObieX 11-28-2009 02:47 AM

Sippin' on a nice Shiraz right now by myself.. ..unless you count the whiny bitches on mic in call of duty modern warfare 2

uncle phil 11-28-2009 02:51 AM

yup...

wooÐs 11-28-2009 06:48 AM

I'm not much of a drinker. But occasionally I will get finish off a nice cabernet during the course of an evening.

Meditrina 11-28-2009 07:01 AM

Yes, I drink alone. A glass of wine to unwind from a crazy day, not every day, but many. I don't drink to get drunk, I just drink to relax. On occasion, I drink along side others in the chat room, then I don't feel like I am drinking alone.

ASU2003 11-28-2009 07:12 AM

I have three rules:
1. Never drink alone
2. Only drink free drinks
3. Never drink when I may have to drive (and no taxis, I am not leaving my car someplace)

BackwoodsmanVA 11-28-2009 07:19 AM

Remember the song by George Thoroughgood?
Goes "I dring alone,all by myself"....

JStrider 11-28-2009 08:59 AM

I drink alone on an almost daily basis... I usually have a beer or 2 with dinner/in the evening watchin tv or movies... I dont get drunk alone... I cut myself off after 2 when I'm alone... if I'm hanging out with people I'll drink more, depending on the situation...

my entire life I remember my dad having a beer or 2 when getting home from work... so its always just seemed like the way to unwind...

Alcoholism/addiction issues do run in my family... so maybe I'm flirting with disaster... but I do enjoy a good brew, and I dont overdo it... but I have noticed I tend to get be in a less good mood if I miss my evening beer...

Punk.of.Ages 11-28-2009 09:39 AM

Not anymore...

I quit drinking recently. I still have a beer here and there in social situations, but that's it.

I used to drink pretty much every night, whether I was alone or not. I'm an alcoholic, though, so I suppose I don't count... =p

CSflim 11-28-2009 10:32 AM

What do you mean by "drink"?

If you just mean "drink an alcoholic beverage", then yeah, I drink alone all the time; I'll have a beer with dinner or have a whiskey in the evening while watching TV, etc.

Or you mean "drink" as in serious heavy drinking with the sole purpose of getting shit-faced drunk? In that case, no, I never drink alone.

Fly 11-28-2009 12:13 PM

so what..........

wobbly pops around baby, and whether there's company or not..........

World's King 11-28-2009 12:25 PM

You never drink alone when you have God by your side.

LordEden 11-28-2009 12:43 PM

I drink alone a lot, almost daily. I have gotten blacked out drunk by myself. I use usually use the excuse of "I'm chatting on the internet, so I'm not alone" most of those times. I started doing it during WoW raids, even made a "drinking guild with a raiding problem" to meet others that like to get drunk a lot. Now I do it on cam every so often in web chat.

It's not a good thing to get drunk alone.

Why not?

I mean, we hear this a lot, and I understand about it being a warning sign of a drinking problem/alcoholism. But, assuming one doesn't drink too much in general, is there anything in particular wrong with drinking alone in itself?

I do drink alone, and occasionally get drunk while doing so. But only occasionally.

So, you don't drink and you're afraid of loud noises.

Damn, Crispy.. understand that I say this with all the love my blackened heart can muster, but you are by far the strangest punk I've ever known.

As for me, I don't have any problem with drinking alone. On the rare occasions that I do indulge, it's just as likely to be at home as at any other venue. Most recently I've taken to having an occasional glass of wine with or after dinner, and since Mags doesn't drink wine I've been alone on that one.

As for overall frequency? Well, I've gone through a bottle and a half of wine in about three years.

Most people think I'm a teetotaler, which is close enough to the truth anyway.

Strange=interesting, my friend. =)

I'll drink again soon enough, I'm sure. I just don't drink now. I suppose I should have said, "not currently" instead of, "not anymore".

I feel it shows one is so disgusted with him/herself or something happening in their lives, that they must numb out in order to be in the same room as themselves.

Oh, and it's not good for your liver.

absorbentishe 11-28-2009 03:50 PM

Most of the time, when I drink, I'll be drinking and no one else will be.

When my brother in law and I get together, then we'll go through a lot of beer!

But alone, I'll still go through a lot of beer!!

HexagonSun 11-28-2009 04:44 PM

I have absolutely no social life, I'm mostly depressed, and I drink alone nearly every day, often times consuming a pint of gin or around 100 ounces of beer. Its funny to see this thread because last night I vowed to quit. True story.

wooÐs 11-28-2009 04:49 PM

Wow. If you were actually drinking that much on a regular basis, you might want to consider seeing a doctor to help you with the detox. Sounds like it might get rough I think.

That is a viable option. I think getting back into weights and martial arts will help a lot too.

jnthnlllshprd 11-28-2009 05:31 PM

Unfortunately yes, I do. When I drink at a party I end up wishing I was at home with some music, something to write or type on, and complete darkness around me.

Sometimes I just chug 8 shots of Vodka and open a movie, a forum, a blog, and a game all at once on my computer, and have at it while I sober up, and I get a huge craving for pasta.

Drinking alone is fine, getting drunk alone is bad. Most of the time the people that are getting drunk alone have depression problems (I know I do) and drinking like that alone just makes it worse. Having a beer after work or a glass of wine after dinner isn't a bad thing (alone or not), but getting shitty on a bottle of jack by yourself is most likely a big warning flag that something major is wrong. I speak from experience.

Detox, no. Support group, yes. Getting help is great, but that's not alot in comparison to the alcoholics I've seen. If he can do it without help, then more power to him. Exercise will help with getting off the juice. Helps your mind and body.

wooÐs 11-28-2009 05:55 PM

Didn't want to come on too strong lol. Those familiar with recovery sometimes come off as preaching - I know I do and I hate it lol.

But yes, treatment and / or groups won't hurt one bit. But support groups are not all hugs and hope. You'll need to work on a lot of shtuff too.

Good luck.

Lord Eden..
Please do not give medical advice as to who needs medical intervention detox, or not:

Doing 'it' without 'help' is not a badge of honor or sign of strength for some folks.
You (and I) do not know this person's medical/drinking history.

I know your hearts in the right place, and you speak from experience,
as do I.

I drank long and hard enough to develope what's known as,
'reverse tolerance.'

The poignancy in this thread has become tangible.

My inherent hermitage bent,

facilitates further isolation and justification behaviors when it involves the drink.

I (and many of my brethren) have tried to self-medicate depression away,
by imbibing a depressent.

No go.

Well shit, I was going to say I don't drink alone but if hanging out in ventrilo and raiding while drinking is considering drinking alone then I'm guilty. I don't really get drunk though. I rarely go above the legal limit.

KellyC 11-28-2009 06:48 PM

I think once or twice, even if it's just a beer or two. I'm not an avid drinker so I don't actively seek out to do it. The only time I drink is with friends.

I do not want to give out medical advice, just my advice. I'll admit to feeling strongly about the 2nd line in your statement, I like to do things without help. All I want to say is, if you think you need help, get help. I don't want to cross lines.

raging moderate 11-28-2009 10:09 PM

haha what an excellent question. see i love getting shitty and playing MMORPG's with friends and "friends" but I also don't consider that to be "drinking alone"...I have been known to kill a bottle of tequila out of boredom, but I think that's a different deal.

I think you KNOW if you have a problem by the way you react to alcohol. I could have a handle sitting in my fridge for a month and not even think about it, then stumble on it and bust it out for no reason. that vs trying your hardest to scrounge out 10 bucks for tonights bottle of gin, or turning to it the moment something bad happens...I think you have your answer.

If you're asking the question b/c you're concerned about yourself, then get help. it's not as bad or embarrassing as it sounds, and i guarantee you 100% of people have needed help at one point or another. anyway to the OP question...yes.

If you're referring to me on concern about myself, no. I am definitely not an alcoholic. I was just wondering who likes to have a glass of wine alone, or perhaps sip on a fine scotch, more than who gets shitfaced :)

noodle 11-29-2009 06:54 AM

I enjoy a beverage from time to time not in the company of others.
After a significant life change, I found myself drinking at least one beer or too many at home alone. Or several glasses of wine.
So, after chat on Labor Day, I quit cold turkey for over a month and reset my tolerance. Now occasionally I will have a Stella with my homemade chili... but a six pack will sit there for awhile. I'm quite pleased that the beers I like the most taste like shite out of a bottle or can otherwise I'd be a total lush. :D

I like the taste of beer, I guess the effect of the booze too.

Might have 2-3 beers when I bbq or on friday or saturday night. My missus does not drink so I guess that would be considered alone? I rarely, can't even recall the last time i drank or got drunk all alone in the house or out. I might bbq 3 times a week. But if I am making pasta on the stove i am sipping a glass of water.

Something about the bbq and beer....whether summer or winter it is good. Doing salmon tonight on the bbq, have some nice stella in bottles (transferred into glass of course!). Tasty...

My father is an alcoholic. During the ages of around 20-24 I would have considered myself the same. Now I don't like to get drunk, don't like the effect, not being in control and hungover the next day. I can go 3 weeks everyday of having 1-3 beers and then not drink for 4 weeks. Don't consider my habit now a problem but it is something i am conscious of.

If my missus told me to stop I would, but I do enjoy the effects of 1-3 beers on me. The little buzz is nice and it helps keep me warm in winter, and cools me down in the summer standing at the grill.

Just a glow no more please.

wooÐs 11-29-2009 11:16 AM

If this is going off topic, I apologize, but I just don't understand how people can drink beer. I'll enjoy one here and there. But the carbonation bloats me like a bitch. I'll drink wine or usually hard liquor in a mixed drink. But I do agree that Corona w/ lime is great during Atlanta summers.

snowy 11-29-2009 12:42 PM

No, I never drink alone these days. I'm not even sure when the last time I drank alone was.

A few years back I too didn't understand beer. BUT that was also before most of my friends and I were 21. I still don't LIKE beer per se, but I can drink it...and even enjoy a brew here and there. *cough* Blue Moon *cough*

Come to think of it, this may be the beer that I drank alone when I did.

wooÐs 11-29-2009 03:55 PM

It's not really the taste that bothers me, but you have to drink cans / bottles of it to get a good buzz going instead of a couple drinks. And it just bloats me, painfully lol.

Anyhoo... that's it. :o
