Evil Priest: The Devil Made Me Do It!

Holy Fucking Shit! My kitchen's on fire!

Well, it looked that way anyway.

My tumble dryer's been on the wane for several weeks - the condenser's been getting weaker and weaker, and today I decided to get a new one tomorrow.

About half an hour after making this decision, my wife went into the kitchen, where the dryer lives under the wooden counter, only to find the kitchen full of thick black smoke.

Killed the power, and pulled the unit out from under the counter, to find smoke pouring out of the vents in the back of the thing.

So - looks like I'm DEFINITELY buying a new one.

Grrrrrr.

I can tell you what's wrong with it.

If you pull off the hood and start taking apart the back, you will find gobs upon gobs of lint shoved in all sorts of areas where lint shouldn't be. Not only compacted in the vents but crammed inside all the nooks and crannies and layered like sheets all over, preventing the dryer from cooling properly. Also prevents your clothes from drying like they should - they just get hot. It's like lint insulation. I learned about this the hard way after getting 2nd degree burns on my fingertips. When we got back from the hospital, my neighbor took apart the dryer and we must have ended with a solid pound of lint. I bought this dryer used though, so not only was it my lint but the previous owner's as well. The dryer was about 7 years old att.

So in the end, I will never ever leave this house with the dryer running. That bitch was H O T.

I don't know if that post makes sense. It took me a long time to write it. Yes, I'm under the influence.

Your post is still relevant. Also, while the back of the dryer is open and you are pulling out handsful of lint, write down the code/specs on the main belt running the tub. If that sucker burns out it is nice to have a spare hanging in the closet

Woods - that makes perfect sense, and I would take the back off and take a look myself were it not for the fact that I was already planning on getting rid anyway - the refrigerant in the condenser is supposed to be changed every couple of years, and I'd had 6-7 out of it.

The callout on getting it regased will cost 3/4 of the price of a new one, and frankly I'd rather have a new one for the full cost than a repaired one for 3/4 the cost.

It's a pisser, but there we are.

It's unplugged and won't be back on. I'll be borrowing my mother's Outback later on to take it to the dump.
