Post Your Favorite Classic Hollywood Portraits
Don't you just love those vintage Hollywood portraits of your favorite B/W movie stars? This is the thread where you can share your collection with other TFP members.
1.) Post your favorite stars and starlets, men or women. Be sure to identify your star by name. 2.) Many of these stars had several classic portraits made, so feel free to post the same star more than once. 3.) It's OK to repeat the same photo if you happen to have a better resolution than the one already posted. 4.) If you want to, include or discuss your favorite movie featuring this star or how you came to admire this star. Here's a couple from my collection to start off: Gene Tierney - I first noticed her in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...rney-small.jpg Hedy Lamarr - She's in Ziegfeld Girl which we happened to watch recently. http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...marr-small.jpg |
I checked an Edward Steichen book out of the library recently and have really become enamored of his style. Here are a few:
Miriam Hopkins http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...s_steichen.jpg Loretta Young http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...g_steichen.jpg Gary Cooper http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...teichen_lg.jpg Charles Chaplin http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...n_steichen.jpg |
Thanks, MM. That's quite a dashing Gary Cooper!
Here's one of my favorites of a star who needs no introduction..... http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/028_8322.jpg |
mmm, she's smokin'...in more ways than one :suave:

Here's Susan Hayward. I discovered her in a photo how-to book about movie portraits.

I'll add Orson Welles. I always found him very interesting, as well as being one of the greatest movie directors, sometimes producer, writer, and star, too! ...Citizen Kane is one of my favorite movies of all time. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...rsonwelles.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...stuff/7872.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ellesCigar.jpg |
Thanks, BadNick! That's exactly the kind of photos we were hoping folks would post here! 'ppreciate it!
Thanks for contributing, ametc. I don't think I've ever seen Lucille Ball looking so glamorous! Thanks for all those! |

Thanks, MM. We could have a thread on Veronica and Ava unto themselves!
Here's Ida Lupino http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...no-small-3.jpg |
Quick question, based on this trending: do the portraits supplied here "need" to be monochromatic, sepia-toned, B&W, etc..?
I'm sure I could snap this trend fairly easily if I wanted to, but in the spirit of the thread, thirdsun, do you have a preference either way? I don't, but I like boundaries sometimes; keeps my chaos factor in check. Also, I just happened upon an enormous source of classic Hollywood niche photographers, and safe to assume at this point, my archive of celebrities from then til now is replete with over 8500+ photographs, a majority of them being black & white portraits. So, at least now, I have a place to share them. Where to host them, though, may be another matter altogether. |

I used this photo as a portrait painting assignment. An almost perfect face. |
Thanks, ngdawg. That would be Greta Garbo. You're right. Her face was the subject of hundreds of these types of photographs. Great contribution!

Walter Brennan: Brennan won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor three times. He is tied with Jack Nicholson for the most Academy Award wins for a male actor. http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...r_01-small.jpg |

I've never seen him that young. |
Slim Pickens makes me happy.
Anytime I run into him on television I have trouble changing the channel. |
I'm just waiting for my turn at this point.
I didn't start watching TV or going out to the cinema until 1973. I also have a very limited range of what defines a "celebrity". More often than not, I need to do a wiki or imdb search to find out their history in detail. It helps, but it also is a backtrack method not truly relevant to the thread. |
There are lots of Anns...
Ann-Margret http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...nn-margret.jpg Susan Hayward http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Hayward_04.jpg |
not sure if she was mentioned already.. but how about silent film girl Clara Bow?

Harry Dean Stanton
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/h...eanstanton.jpg I'm still looking for one of Robert Duvall. |
Is it just me, or do stars from the past have more...I don't know...oomph than stars today?

There are some current stars who have the ability to capture the glamour of classic Hollywood...Cate Blanchett and George Clooney come to mind at the moment. But there are others. Kate Winslet, her too. |
I gotta throw a little Jayne Mansfield in here, just cuz :)

It's not an Hollywood star but an Italian '40 movie star.
This is Adriana Benetti photographed by Arturo Ghergo. http://www.tevacphoto.com/wp-content...p23904img1.jpg Ghergo is one of my favorite glamour portraist, he shot in the '30 and '40 but is so modern that can be put on Vogue tomorrow and noone will notice the difference. His use of diagonal in portrait is sooo good, and the sapient soft lighting make the skin perfect but not plastic (as usual in today glamour shot  ) |
While I don't have any pictures to add, I did want to say that I love these pictures in part because most of them stay far, far away from gimmicks. The picture is of the person with nothing to hide behind.

First of all, often these photos were made with large format studio cameras (which means the negative and resulting print are exceptionally detailed). Secondly, the lighting was usually stage and movie studio lighting (not photo studio lighting) so that the classic images have a theatrical and more dramatic look, inkier shadows, and exceptional highlighting (for example hair lights, complicated back lighting, etc.). It usually took them an hour or more to setup a mere headshot. Often they were taken on the movie set itself. Third, the photos were extensively retouched by artists who did nothing else but make these photos and their subjects look exquisite. Which is not to say that the subject being photographed didn't have oomph...they were charismatic and extremely photogenic people, chosen for their acting ability as well as their ability to look great on-screen and on camera. As a point of comparison, look at these classic photos of Humphrey Bogart (considered to be the greatest male star of all time): http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...y_01-small.jpg http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...y_NRFPT_01.jpg http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...y20Casabla.jpg Then compare them to these photos of Robert Downey, Jr. Today's typical movie-star shots are usually created in a hurry. The photographer might have 10 or 15 minutes with a star. True, an all-day photo shoot is more typical of magazines like Vanity Fair, but many of the photos you see today are snap-shots by comparison with the old movie classic photographs. Personally, I don't think RDJ has any less oomph than Bogey. But the methods (and results) in these photographs from two different eras are obviously worlds apart. http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...o322/story.jpg http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...ey-junior1.jpg http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...tDowneyJr_.jpg http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...-jr-391521.jpg http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...2396001343.jpg |
