any Army members in here?
I'm enlisted into the army and I've got a few questions for anyone with a little bit of experience. My mos will be 42R (bandmember). i play the flute.
anyways, i got offered these as my assignments and was wondering if i can get a bit of info to help me make my choice. Ft. Campbell 101st airborne division band hopkinsville, ky 2nd infantry division band uijongbu, south korea 8th army band seoul, south korea Ft. Rucker 98th army band dothan, al Ft. Sill 77 army band lawton, ok I've been told the performance schedules for the band and ensembles are pretty much the same. the only thing i've got to worry about is where i'd like to live. I hear OK is really hot during the summer. So i'm kinda leaning away from it. I have no clue about Korea, but i wouldn't consider it off my list just yet. I'm really hoping for Japan, and i'm talking to my band liason now hoping that I can somehow squeeze in but i'm not holding my breath on that. Then there's Alabama. But I've been told a lot of officers are on this base and they let that get to their head. I think out of all these though, kentucky is the front runner. i dont know why, but it just seems like it would be okay. I have no idea about how life on base would be so i'd appreciate any help at all. i'm turning 28 and single so i guess that would come into play also. how the nightlife? am i going to be bored out of my mind at these places? TIA, alan |
I'm not in the army, but I can comment on Fort Campbell as I live just a few miles north of there. Not a lot goes on in Hopkinsville. You'll probably find you spend more of your free time in Clarksville TN which is a modest sized town of about 100,000pop. and a better selection of shopping and entertainment. 40 miles from from Clarksville and you're in Nashville which is quite a nice city but unless you're going to catch a concert or something there's no other reason to go.
Hope that helps. |
i live near dothan...there is NOTHING here. well, theres some stuff in dothan, but not much, and nothing in the surrounding area.
so, unless you like being in the middle of bumfuck, avoid dothan. |
to the topic at hand; there are a number of army, air force, navy, coast guard, etc., members and veterans here...

Are you male or female?
I would suggest trying one of the OCONUS units as you will get to see some very different places. I would stay away from Fort Sill as it is a very dull, dreary place. The quality of the bands will probably influence your decision somewhat, but I don't have any advice for you on that front. |

does the US intentionally set up base in boring places?
thats the way its looking here! |
Seoul it is!
Do your research. I haven't heard all that much about the city, but it might be worthwhile! |
just like anyplace, the grass is always greener...
|
Yes, the Army really does set up bases in boring places.
The land is cheap and they bother less people that way. |
You don't have great choices. Good luck.

soooo...
it looks like you're going to Seoul eh?... i agree...travel the world dude. you probably will never get the chance to see some of these countries again. who says you cant enjoy yourself while you're in the army, right? |
I have no useful advice since I'm not in the army and don't know anyone who is - my husband's family are navy/marines guys. Kentucky has some beautiful countryside - delightful rolling hills and it's green and beautiful for most of the year. Then again, I have only been to a few places in Kentucky near Cincinnati. I enjoy international travel, so I'd probably choose Korea.

The Army presence here in Japan is minimal. If you wanted to come here you should have been a Marine. Korea is hella cold in the winter, and Seoul can be a bit unfriendly to GIs. Out of your choices, I'd go with Korea (I was never posted there), but then again, I don't really envy your choices. Good luck, and thanks for your service.

thanks everyone for the bits of information.
i thought OK would be too hot, so now thanks to the post above, i'll avoid it for sure. AL never seemed to interesting to me. if i decide to stay in the states, i think KY would be the best bet. more and more people are telling me I should travel and check out Korea. I haven't made my final decision yet, but I think it'll probably be seoul, south korea. |
Korea love you long time.
