Anyone been to Mexico in August?

Hi everyone,
My wedding will be in mid August next year and we will have a rather short honeymoon. We were thinking Mexico because we can get in and out quickly, but we're concerned about hurricane season. Are there any parts of the country that won't be affected by it? Has anyone been? Any feedback would be helpful.

It depends where in Mexico. Mexico is HUGE and has jungle and beaches and deserts. I live by Tijuana, Mexico.. and the weather there is pretty much the same as here. Same with Rosarito. Guadalajara is supposed to be beautiful with nice weather as well.

If you want to stay in the states but have nice weather in august, try out Southern California. I live in San Diego and it only ever rains here in the Winter so August should be fine here.

Well, speaking as a guy with a bit more than a passing interest in hurricanes, the farther south you go, the bigger chance of a "hit". Of course, the farther north you go, the bigger chance you'll run into someone in one of the cartels, which is probably worse. Even the central parts of the country can have the reduced hurricanes pass through. Then again, the remains of a hurricane hit Chicago, Indianapolis and Cleveland last summer, so there you go.

Really, there's no good answer for this. Hurricanes hit on both the east and west coast, although the west coast is less likely, especially the farther north you go. On the Atlantic side, you're pretty much rolling the dice, but you'd also be rolling the dice if you went anywhere in the Carribean, Florida, Texas, the Carolinas, etc.

If you want to be absolutely safe from Hurricanes, go to Canada. Of course, you'll have to be concerned about a polar bear crashing through the walls of the wedding igloo and eating all your guests, but at least it's not a hurricane. Unless the bear's name is "Hurricane", in which case you're just screwed.

I've been to Mexico in August, many many times. I've been chased out of Cancun by a hurricane and I've been chased out of Florida twice, once out of Key West and once out of just north of Miami. As Jazz points out you're rolling the dice going to the tropics in hurricane season. Personally I'd say pick a spot you want to go and buy travel insurance, make sure it covers hurricanes. Some policies are getting tricky and covering just about everything but a hurricane.

I currently live in the state of Yucatan. I'm about 3 hrs from Cancun and the Costa Maya. I'm on the gulf side of the Yucatan Pen. When a hurricane hits Cancun or Belize it has to cross land to get here. By the time it gets here it's usually just a bunch of rain. So here is a viable option, but keep in mind Merida and the area in general isn't anything like Cancun or the other resort areas. The beach, which is at Progreso and where I live, are not as clean and the water is not as clear. The only real full service beach resort, The Reef Club, bills it's self a 4 star. I've been there it's more like a low 3 star. Merida itself has many very nice hotels, many easily 4 star maybe 5, and the city itself is wonderful. It's an old style colonial city with many buildings built in the 16th century. There are a about 30 Mayan ruins sites within an hour drive. Several haciendas which have been restored and are now 4 and 5 star resorts. The Hacienda Temozon is very nice, several US Presidents and former Presidents have stayed there.

Here's a link to more info on this area-

If you'd like more info, just ask.

Hot with thunder showers almost every afternoon/early evening. May about the same but with less storm activity.

Maybe a place that would be less hot would be Baja California. I went there once to see the whales, I think it was called Cabo San Lucas, and it was gorgeous. I'm not sure, but I think it's less likely than the Yucatan area to get hit with hurricanes.
Although if you are into ruins, Baja isn't the place.

I always love Isla Mujeres, just off Cancun, any time of the year.

I just check online, because I wasn't sure when "whale season" was in Baja. Apparently it's August through October.

In terms of ruins, I loved Palenque, Chichen Itza, and Tulum(pictured below):

If you are on your honeymoon... make sure you get down to Tulum. The ruins are a nice excuse to go, but after that you can hit the nude/topless beaches that are free from the tourist crowds. Hey, it's your honeymoon... no better time to get a little frisky. I took the little lady down there for her birthday and we were able to find many secluded (cough) spots with fantastic sea views. Plus you get the feeling that you found a little hideaway... rather than the Vegas-type tourist churn of Cancun.
