I Killed The Porn

"Why?"

1. It hurt our credibility.
2. Its presence required us to have a few inane rules.

"But I liked the porn."

1. The porn exists now at Tilted Forum Project Erogenous Zone - Powered by vBulletin
2. With the porn on a separate site, it will allow us to get some additional revenue through ads.

"Hal, you suck."

:(

"Good job."

:)

snowy 08-09-2009 07:06 PM

Thanks! I really appreciate it! I look forward to seeing where this change takes us.

Punk.of.Ages 08-09-2009 07:10 PM

Down with the porn!

I think this is a positive change for us.

n0nsensical 08-09-2009 07:13 PM

Good call, we get to have our cake and eat it too.

Manic_Skafe 08-09-2009 07:14 PM

Smart move. There's far too much of it everywhere on the web for the TFP to even compete. Hopefully this will bring in more members interested in discussion than stroking their members.

And we still have the exhibition forum! What of the 18+ picture posting rule?

laconic1 08-09-2009 07:26 PM

Good call. I felt like back in the day this place was one of the best for porn, but with file hosts like rapidshare, and sites dedicated to sharing through those hosts tfp couldn't really compete. And we still have it if we really want it with the new site.

Willravel 08-09-2009 07:28 PM

Does this mean we can post pictures of individuals under 18 now? Just curious.

BTW, put me in the "good job" category.

Martian 08-09-2009 07:34 PM

I'm not for or against the porn. This does seem like a good compromise for those who are in one camp or the other, though.

My ambivalence continues.

Gabbyness 08-09-2009 07:34 PM

As long as we still have your avatar, I think we'll all survive.

;)

Plan9 08-09-2009 07:39 PM

Pfft, The_Jazz killed my porn a long time ago. He's a good father.

Making sure I walk around with a scrot like a loaded IV bag.

:)

Grancey 08-09-2009 07:45 PM

Interesting business decision. Wish I knew the statistics you used to prompt this change. It will be fun to watch and see what happens.

Bill O'Rights 08-09-2009 08:27 PM

Count me in favor of this decision. It's a tough call, but it will be very interesting to see where the change takes us. I expect good things. As with Will and Manic, I await a ruling on the 18+ picture posting rule.

FuglyStick 08-09-2009 08:29 PM

I think we will see an increase in members interested in the community aspect; I think it's a good idea.

dlish 08-09-2009 08:44 PM

maybe we can have more people recommend TFP now.

hope this makes a big change for us. i was neither for nor against the porn.. but cheers to a new beginning.

mrklixx 08-09-2009 09:07 PM

There was porn here?!?!:eek::eek::eek:

But seriously, I don't know how effective it's going to be since it still has "Tilted Forum Project" in the title.. In fact it might have the opposite of the desired effect because if someone searches for "Tilted Forum Project" and clicks that link instead, they get nothing but porn.

You could always call it "Leaning Conclave Affair".

Plan9 08-09-2009 09:10 PM

I'll be able to invite a lot more people to TFP now that said dirty-dirty-no-no is gone.

...

Granted, that might not be a good thing.

Punk.of.Ages 08-09-2009 09:13 PM

More Crompsin-like folk?

I'm for this...

Crack 08-09-2009 09:20 PM

Question...

Is this still allowed?

http://www.ratemyeverything.net/imag...W_Porn_10.ashx

CinnamonGirl 08-09-2009 10:00 PM

hmmm.... well, I never really checked out the porn aspect, so in general, this won't affect me.

It'll be interesting to see how it affects the site, though.

levite 08-09-2009 10:26 PM

Well, I've always enjoyed the porn, but I think this is a great compromise solution.

Nicely done, Hal. I applaud your ownership/administration and/or moderation.

Xerxys 08-09-2009 10:28 PM

The porn was not an issue in the first place because you had to register to view it. You might as well get rid of the sexuality forum too.

The TFPEZ will not show up on google searches because it's unsearchable.

Sad day for closet republicans while they outwardly celebrate.

PonyPotato 08-10-2009 01:42 AM

:)

I've already recommended the forum to a couple people I know in the last week.. honestly, this makes it easier to recommend to a few more.

The link on the front page is still there and a click takes you to the other site. No worries.

What difference does it make if it's still on the front page?

Reese 08-10-2009 03:10 AM

What exactly is accomplished by moving the porn to a different domain? I get that now that it's on a different domain you can put ads on it, but is there really anything else? I mean, I wouldn't have even noticed the board was no longer part of TFP if I hadn't been prompted to log in. Is this really a separation of TFP from porn or a technicality that needed to be done so you could have ad revenue without affecting general tfp forums?

BTW, I'm in the Good Job camp. It does seem to make it easier to share the site with some of my more prudish friends.

I think this is a move in the right direction, but I'm asking myself this question, too. Will the links eventually be moved someplace less conspicuous?

Halx 08-10-2009 03:53 AM

This is just the first step. I can't leave the porn users completely stranded because many of them donate as well. In a few days I'll reduce the footprint on the front page.

Seriously, I don't care. I liked the ability to look at porn if I wanted too, but since it shows up on your profile what you are looking at, I didn't do it alot. Did like amateur shots on there tho, going to miss that.

People! We are looking at the wrong issue. No more porn on TFP is not the problem, but the biggest question remains unanswered. What the fuck is bobby going to do now? He will have all this porn and no where to put it... he will get a massive back up and... well I guess he has the "ol lady" for that.

PonyPotato 08-10-2009 04:59 AM

LordEden: The porn is not GONE - the Erogenous Zone is just located on a different domain.

bobby will still have a place to put all of his porn. :P

There's a sizeable percentage with the same story. That said, you should see this developing roughly like Fark did with their Foobies page. There was a link on the main page for a while that then disappeared. However, there's still numerous links back to Fark from their Foobies page.

You know, I want to say this publicly. Thank you bobby! You gave TFP porn for MANY years. I'm another one that "Came for the boobies, stayed for the fluff" and spent many a day lurking on the titty board. I salute you bobby for your fine work here at TFP. You are a gentleman and a scholar.

So how would moving an optional only forum that was only available to registered members improve traffic?

Once the links are gone, I don't have a problem sharing it with more people. Social media is where PR is these days, and the questions I ask before I post something are "Am I OK with my family seeing this?" for Facebook, and "Is it OK if NY Times editors associate this with me?" on Twitter. With porn here, the answer to both of those was a resounding "no." With no porn, I'm OK with it.

Halx 08-10-2009 05:54 AM

I never said anything about traffic. BUT since you asked, here's what I see happening:

People visit and register.
People see a generally wholesome board (not sleazy).
People actually link to forum from their blogs and whatnot because they know they aren't corrupting people with porn.

LoganSnake 08-10-2009 05:55 AM

Aren't people allowed to post tits and whatnot in other parts of the forum? There are plenty of non-Titty Board NSFW threads. Will they be banned?

Halx 08-10-2009 06:00 AM

Of course not.

Frosstbyte 08-10-2009 09:46 AM

You see logan, the hall of fame threads all about working in the porn industry or horizontal pussies of all things is something we cherish and preserve forever. We put it out there for all to see and read. But god forbid you scroll down the page and see a board dedicated to such a vile little thing.

They've drawn an astonishingly arbitrary line in the sand. Fark did the same thing and it is a pale imitation of what it once was, overmoderated at the whims of nervous advertisers. This is an adult board. We have always had lots of sex and nudity all over it. With no effort in virtually every discussion subforum here you can find explicit content. And I have always appreciated that.

Road to hell. Good intentions. If your family or an advertiser can overlook the literally thousands of other posts with sexual content, they should be able to not scroll down to the dark evil ez. Enough said.

Halx 08-10-2009 09:51 AM

Eh. I'm not done making changes.

Derwood 08-10-2009 09:52 AM

FARK not only removed the porn, but they filter language as well

Frosstbyte 08-10-2009 10:06 AM

I am probably just getting into trouble at this point, but is your avatar the first thing you plan to change?

Did you really just describe this board as "wholesome"? Wholesome?!? Seriously?

I would never hve described this board as sleaz either, which I think is a lot of the appeal and has always bee, despite the amount of adult content.

Halx 08-10-2009 10:13 AM

So does Digg. The big difference between us and those two sites is that they are profit-based sites that rely on advertisers. We are nothing like that. We rely on donations from our users to survive, so we are entirely dependent on YOU GUYS. That's right, YOU are what makes the TFP run. The rest of those sites have taken full advantage of their popularity and partnered with other companies that will shape the way they run and operate. We remain independent and free.

With that said, the removal of the porn is a risky move, but a necessary one from my perspective. It allows users to recommend the site to their friends and family. It makes it OK. The one thing we LACK is permanent links to the site. 99% of our traffic comes from searches. This means that users are not coming from sympathetic sources. They are just coming for specific information, which they get, and then they leave. If we make the site more audience-friendly, we open the doors for people to recommend us to a larger amount of people. This is what quality traffic is all about.

Additionally, I have many more changes planned for the site. We probably won't even see them in action until the middle of next year.

Derwood 08-10-2009 10:16 AM

so why "censor" the porn but not, say, the weapons discussion? which is more damaging?

So let me see if I have this right. Of all the places on the internet where you can get porn for free, TFP was your number one pick?

I was one of the mods in favor of losing the porn. Why? Because it's not drawing in users, and it's preventing some of us from telling our friends to check the place out. It isn't drawing in users because anyone who's heard of Google can find more and better porn than we ever had with a 30 second search. No one's going to come here for a few pictures of naked women when there are literally millions of pictures and videos of naked anything-you-want at other sites.

So, our lackluster porn collection is failing to bring in new members. And because it's a "porn-site" I certainly can't tell my coworkers to come check it out, because I'd be out of a job by the end of the week.

Keeping the porn around simply does not, from my perspective anyway, make one iota of sense.

SecretMethod70 08-10-2009 10:39 AM

There's a difference between having forums explicitly dedicated to porn, and having a site which is accepting of adult-themed discussion and not shy about the human body.

LoganSnake 08-10-2009 10:43 AM

So then I ask again, with porn being the reason you can't recommend this forum to your friends and family, what will be done about tits and other sexual material in other places of this forum?

1) Will it become against the rules?
2) Will existing content be deleted?

I honestly don't see much difference. *shrug*

Whatever. I wasn't big about that forum anyway.

I guess I got too soapboxy. Logan is really focused on the question that matters. I can easily click an extra link to get to ez content (I guess until the link goes away) but what does this change mean for the whole board's direction.

You don't see the difference. I do. It is all about shaping a first impression... the things you are mentioning are things that people generally notice once they've dived into the site - the nuances. The porn section was a large chunk of the forum itself that was apparent immediately.

For some, there's not much of a difference. For others, there is. This will allow those people to be invited. It's a lot easier to say "hey, the board has some adult discussions and it's the internet, so you know some people sometimes post NSFW stuff or have NSFW avatars," than "hey, check out this great forum which has open and frank adult discussion, AND BY THE WAY ALSO HAS A POOOOOORN SECTION!!!" (whether that's how you say it, that's how it's heard by many)

If the porn isn't a reason you come here, not much at all.

Frosstbyte 08-10-2009 10:53 AM

For your friends, family and coworkers who would be scared off by porn, how will they feel about the sexuality forum or the hall of fame, explicit avatars or the exhibition forum? Are we going to turn off access to those boards to some people based on who referred them here based on their comfort level or something? People who are scared of seeing boobs are still going to be scared of seeing boobs. Doesn't matter where the thread is...

SecretMethod70 08-10-2009 10:54 AM

People who have issues with porn don't necessarily have issues with watching a French movie (yay stereotypes!)... porn and boobs are two different things.

Strange Famous 08-10-2009 10:56 AM

The_Jazz 08-10-2009 10:56 AM

I hope that by the time that most folks who have stuck around here for long enough to have to TE get there, they understand the basic difference between "your body as art" and real porn. We have a lot of the former and only a little of the latter in TE.

There is no plan on sanitizing anything. Consider this the equivalent of putting our nudie mags in a drawer (or in Bobby's case, a warehouse) when we have a party for the new neighbors. Maybe we'll get to know them well enough to share that with them too.

Plan9 08-10-2009 11:04 AM

Somebody should make this thread NSFW.

...

Don't make me post Crompporn.

Frosstbyte 08-10-2009 11:07 AM

Well it's done. My objection is noted. I feel silly saying this, but this board was built on porn. I know times change, but it is going to be a little weird not having it there. Hopefully our evolution takes us somewhere good.

loquitur 08-10-2009 11:12 AM

FWIW, the porn "thrill" wore off for me a while ago. Yes, I came here originally because of a link from FARK to the Titty Board. I was also at one time (probably about 4 years ago) a pretty heavy poster on the Titty Board, no doubt a result of the exuberance of new discovery. Nowadays I don't post there any more, and I think the fascination has worn off a bit; less and less of the stuff there gets clicked on. So this change is perfectly OK. I won't stop coming by here just because I can't ogle bare bodies, mainly because that's not why I come here anymore. I wonder if other people are experiencing the same feeling of "overload" re porn, too.

Halx 08-10-2009 11:14 AM

...and before the porn, it was a gaming forum.

Evolution.

This just in . . . . . . McDonalds to go vegan; expect profits to soar, reduce unwanted riff-raff. According to a company spokesman, "We've never really been about the selling of meat - that's an unfair and undeserved reputation we've been trying to correct, and it's unfair to our loyal customer base, who have been coming here for years to order salads. Now they can feel comfortable bringing a friend along for a Flurry, knowing that they will no longer suffer the shame of being associated with the murder of farm animals."

Okay - sarcasm aside, I've always held the belief that this is Halx's sandbox, and he gets to make the rules. If I don't like it, I can click the "Log Out" button. If he wants to make a few bucks for all the remarkably hard work he's done in the past decade, more power to him.

You were in that thread. Among other people.

FWIW, I'm just playing devil's advocate here. My life changes not one bit if the Titty Board is an extra click away. I'm just digging for the reasons. Someone brought up FARK, and they clearly made their changes to increase ad revenue. HalX assures us TFP won't go the ad route. I believe him (for now, though that route is awfully tempting, esp. if site traffic increases)

I really don't see what the big deal is guys about the porn being one click (or an extra bookmark) away. It's not gone, just moved.

biznatch 08-10-2009 12:26 PM

Good move. I still use the TB from time to time, but this won't change that.
Unfortunately, this still doesn't mean I'll bring friends over here..Just too much personal stuff.

As an earlier post mentioned, "gaping cunts don't kill people - guns do". Or rather, people who turn to guns as a problem solver.

In all truth - I have found the glorification of weapons here ALOT more disgusting than any of the porn posts. That being said...it will be interesting to see how long before the Ads start appearing. For me, the erotic stuff is just 1 more click away - so in some ways it will be easier for me to be less distracted by all the wargames crap & gun "porn" pretending to be intelligent discussion(s).

Live & Let Live.

Good Luck either way.

Wow, I totally just let that piss me off.

Time for a deep breath.

Or maybe some masturbation.

hunnychile 08-10-2009 02:35 PM

Thanks. I needed that!

Plan9 08-10-2009 02:38 PM

You needed to piss me off?

Maybe, to satisfy (or offend) just about everyone, we need a special forum featuring naked women holding the biggest honking firearms you can find.

Guaranteed attention-getter, eh? To say nothing of the Freudian implications.......

hunnychile 08-10-2009 03:27 PM

Loc - BINGO - That would certainly be a huge money maker!

yournamehere 08-10-2009 03:30 PM

Just to put an end to all the gun/porn arguing:
Guns don't kill people; bullets do.

Xerxys 08-10-2009 03:31 PM

According to TFP, Porn kills traffic, Bullets don't.

If you want to get technical, it's not even the bullets. It's the lack of bloodflow in the brain that kills people.

LoganSnake 08-10-2009 05:46 PM

You can kill a person with a gun if you use it as a blunt weapon or impale his or her eye/heart (depending on length) on a barrel.

Plan9 08-10-2009 06:07 PM

Oh, jesus... just let it go.

Pure ignorance shouldn't further a debate.
