Michael Jackson dead? Don't care

Am I the only one who doesn't really care about Michael Jackson dying? Seen some videos he made, pretty cool, had some good music that he put out like 20 years ago, now he's dead. I try to care, but I can't. And now all of a sudden he has 20 billion fans that haven't listened to his music in 20 years coming out of the woodwork to mourn on TV. Good grief.

And another thing. Cardiac arrest? Try drug overdose. The mysterious doctor from vegas who has disappeared off of the face of the earth? A tox screen that takes 8 weeks to complete? OK.

you cared enough to make a new thread.

its a bit silly to go to the effort of posting a comment about the fact you dont care about something, and a bit self defeating.

tisonlyi 06-27-2009 10:24 AM

It's wall-to-wall here in the UK and I was sick of it before it even got started.

Latest: Stevie Wonder praising MJ for his videos and dancing.

ORLY? You know this how?

SOMEONE MAKE IT STOP. PLEASE.

---------- Post added at 07:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:22 PM ----------

And to those pointing to the circular nature of the OP, it is possible to get sick of being informed that you should feel something for this completely false tragedy. I'd say it's the saturation and falsity which is behind the OP?

Feel free to tell me my telepathy is off.

Manic_Skafe 06-27-2009 10:25 AM

I don't care about this thread.

(kinda the same thing)

Who is this Michael Jackson person you all speak of?

meh....

percy 06-27-2009 05:38 PM

I didn't care for his music - some songs I liked. He was pretty weird but I guess sometimes that's better than boring. Do I recognize his appeal and his accomplishments? Absolutely

Do I really care about his death? No, not at all. But then I really don't care about anyones death for whom I do not directly know. Why would I. I look at Michael Jackson's death, Farrah's death and everyone elses included the persons who may have died in NYC, Tokyo or Berlin today as the same.

Life comes and life goes. I save my grief for those I know, not those I don't or ever will.

Slims 06-27-2009 05:55 PM

I don't see how his death is any more significant than any number of minor celebrities. On the day of his death I wasted a lot of time flipping between every single news channel on Dish Network trying to find some real news...everybody seemed to agree that Michael Jackson was the only thing that mattered in the world.

He should have been given a quick blurb in the news and that is all. There are more important things to discuss than every last detail of his life... regardless of how pathetic it was.

Xerxys 06-27-2009 06:14 PM

^^ Hehehe, you're one of those eh?

for all of you grumbling about MJ's demise, I gotta ask? Does it bother you? If so, why?

Really, it's like saying the heat bothers you. It's summer, if the heat bothers you you got a HUGE problem.

Psycho Dad 06-27-2009 06:15 PM

I think what got me most was flipping through the channels and finding Wolf Blitzer reporting from "The Situation Room" all the latest on Jackson. I would think that if CNN gave half a damn about making Blitzer's program look credible they would have gave Blitzer the night off and had someone else do a "special".

Michael Jackson died?

filtherton 06-27-2009 10:13 PM

Yep. He got killed protesting the election in Iran.

Nimetic 06-28-2009 02:29 AM

It's odd to me also that it's such a big deal.

I mean... with the court cases and so on, I gave up trying to figure out what the deal was with the guy a decade or two back.

I have to say... and I don't want to sound odd on this one, that MJ seems to have an unusually huge fan base in Asia. I've often wondered whether that was in-part due their being (I think) a lower tolerance in some of those countries for rock/punk/metal/grunge. Ie anything that looks politically scary. At least in terms of state run channels.

Nisses 06-28-2009 06:35 AM

The OP cared enough to make this thread not about the death of MJ, but the amount of publicity it gets. Nothing self-defeating about that from what I can tell.

Also, I firmly believe had he died 15 years ago, he'd be a legend bigger than the beatles... I wonder if the last 15 years of his life won't drag his legacy down fairly quickly (at least in the West)

Flinx 06-28-2009 07:08 AM

Couldn't care less about his death except all the fuss an bother about it. I'm SO DAM sick of hearing about it on the TV, Radio and papers. It seems that every station thinks his death is THE major news story of the year/century, get over it already I want some real news or even some made up news instead of this.

Yeah, because everyone will be sooooo glued to their sets and online news services reading about the latest piracy in Somalia, riot in Iran or the latest North Korean threat.

:shakehead:

Seriously, while I personally like to watch the BBC World Service for it's coverage of world events, 99% of people would much rather watch news items about Jackson.

roachboy 06-28-2009 08:17 AM

threads like this are kinda like that stupid box on twitter that asks "what are you doing?" to which the only possible correct replies involve either reading the question "what are you doing?" or some regress about thinking about thinking about how to answer the question "what are you doing?" twitter is less a social medium than a chance to see zeno's paradox in action. why i am writing this?

perhaps the only consistent way to speak about indifference is to talk about something else.
but now i've wrecked it because i am talking about talking about indifference. which means that i am interested in my indifference. so maybe i'm not indifferent about michael jackson, or maybe i am indifferent about michael jackson, but at least for the duration of this sentence i am interested in indifference, but not in any particular manifestation of indifference though now that i think more about it i am unclear about how indifference can manifest because that implies an action and indifference would more happen than be done, don't you think?
what would it mean to be actively indifferent about something?
would being actively indifferent about michael jackson's demise be a way to resolve this Important Question?
but that would make indifference about michael jackson exemplary and not a matter of indifference.

such a muddle.
so many problems.
i should drink less coffee.

The doctor was there the whole time and fully cooperated with law enforcement, and autopsies done by law enforcement are drawn out to make sure that every last thing is admissible as evidence if necessary. That's why the family asked for a second autopsy.

Xerxys 06-28-2009 08:57 AM

I think people can be indifferent about MJ being dead, only they care and/or are curious about how many people share this sentiment. roachboy is right, paradox!! So, given that, you are indifferent, just because you answered in the thread doesn't mean you should have an opinion let alone give two shits about MJ.

In twitter the box is there because someone actually cares about what you are doing. If you were to encounter a box inquiring you to update your status, simply continue scrolling down and troll on to the next thing there is that you might care about ...

flat5 06-28-2009 10:21 AM

He meant nothing to me.
When a jazz musician dies I care.

Corneo 06-28-2009 11:27 AM

I'm too young to be a Michael Jackson fan growing up, but I did like some of his music. I don't exactly feel sad because I just wasn't his fan. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that the law didn't find him guilty of all those allegations. But they definitely didn't call him wacko jacko for no reason.

I agree completely. When Wayman Tisdale died last month and it seemed like nobody cared. Michael Jackson dies and nothing else matters. A true WTF moment.

biznatch 06-29-2009 11:01 AM

^^
To be fair, he was probably one of the most popular singers/performers around the world. There are artists that are much more talented, and will never get his fame, but that's the way it goes.
And if it bothers you so much, don't watch CNN. Most of their shit is bull anyway, as well as every other major tv news station.

gabrieljosh 06-30-2009 03:57 AM

R.I.P MJ...

Xazy 06-30-2009 04:25 AM

I do not care, and his death just has begun to annoy me. The news only talks about him, you turn on any news channel and every 5 minutes they have an update to let you know he is still dead.

No news channel covered the climate energy bill that passed on Friday did not even get a mention on 3 different channels that I saw. Despite it covering over a trillion dollars, may cost taxpayers $3,000 more a year in energy bill, and 300 amendments were tacked on the day of the bill, where most had not even read the amendments before voting. Yep, turn on cnn news, fox news, msnbc, abc, and zip no real discussion on it. Cause they were all talking about the death of Michael Jackson... Now they can maybe slide another moronic bill past the public before he is buried, or they just need to wait for another major star to die.

Psycho Dad 06-30-2009 04:31 AM

I think if MTV, VH1 and E! wanted to attract new viewers right now, they could start covering politics, world events, news and weather. There are few places to get that right now it seems.

Seriously though it is starting to get better. But the way this shit got saturated in the news does make one wonder what the people want to see or at least what the news networks think we want to see.

mixedmedia 06-30-2009 04:44 AM

I haven't had trouble finding the news and yet I haven't seen one second of coverage about Michael Jackson's death.

Who am I?

The better question is from where are you getting your news?

On the internet, where one can actually find the news.

I despise television news (most television programming, actually), for the same reason that everyone here is lamenting about - except not only when Michael Jackson is recently dead. :)

Everyone should just stop watching. It is obsolete.

spindles 06-30-2009 04:10 PM

I don't care. Now excuse me - I have to go find my copy of 'Thriller'.

thespian86 06-30-2009 04:28 PM

He was "the king of pop". deal with it.

Jetée 06-30-2009 09:43 PM

I've been meaning to offer a claim of opinion that wouldn't look as though I were disparaging anyone's annoyance at the sometimes incessant media coverage (truly depends on where or if at all you like to be informed of the news) concerning Michael Jackson's recent passing.

I found my citation in the form of a sports blogger, no less (courtesy of Chris Chase):

"Impulsivity and the ability to instantly post things on the internet are a dangerous mix. Throw in egomania and, well, you've pretty much got Chad Johnson's Twitter page." . . . [or, more accurately, nearly every odd celebrity that might've shaken Jackson's hand once, as well as multiple random joes posting minutia, trying to make MJ's death all about themselves.]

Along the lines of the article, what I first gathered from the OP of this thread, and the quick response provided by cybermike, is that some feel the need to divert attention from what is (was) a major and breaking revelation in an icon's passing, into, well... this.

... continued quote, "Anyway, after news of Michael Jackson's death broke yesterday, Johnson had a typically measured response:"
