Would you:

Lets assume for the sake of the poll that something magical happens where your current job decides that they want to pay you your current pay, including benefits and insurance even if you don't work for them anymore.

You get this money every regular pay period regardless of if you go into work or not.

Would you still go into work?
Would you work another job and make even more money over and above what you are getting for free?
Would you invest your time in school to find something that you love to do?
Would you not work and do whatever you wanted to do, be it charity, spending time with friends and family, or enjoying having nothing to do for a change?

Would it be different if you won the lottery? Huge sum of money, more than you can spend, would you still work?

For those that answer yes; do you love your job? (silly question, I know)

If you did win the lottery, would you continue working in a job that was merely there to provide income?

I am of the state of mind that with both cases, if I have no need to work for the money, then why not use it to find something in life that I actually enjoy doing. No need to waste my life slaving away at something that offers me no further reward other than a means to rent/steak/high speed internet.

I ask this because I know people that if they were given money to do with what they will, they would still work, even though they might hate the job from time to time, they still feel like that HAVE to work.

Xerxys 05-16-2009 01:45 PM

HA! Those people are foolish and as naive as I was younger!! I would do SO much with no work in the way. I would learn exactly what a motor vehicle is .... bunjee jump, sky dive,

Become a Pick up artist ...

PonyPotato 05-16-2009 01:53 PM

I would do my "extra" work if everything was already paid for. Taking care of horses, making the barn (and my apartment spotless), doing all of those little tasks I never have time for.

And then I would do volunteer work and travel.

genuinegirly 05-16-2009 01:54 PM

If I don't go to "work" every day, I won't end up with a degree. So, yeah. Even if they were paying me without coming in to do my work, I would still work. I need to publish regularly. Otherwise my passion will be for naught.

Interesting thing to think about, though.

Zeraph 05-16-2009 02:30 PM

I'd find something I love to do and do it.

hunnychile 05-16-2009 02:37 PM

I'd create scholarships for artists and musicians. And also set up training institutions for any one who needs or wants to change careers.

Fotzlid 05-16-2009 02:45 PM

I would take an extended amount of time off and do some traveling around the country.
I would eventually go back to work. At least till I didn't feel like working again.

Willravel 05-16-2009 03:00 PM

Would you still go into work?
Yes. I work with good people and I feel I do good.
Would you work another job and make even more money over and above what you are getting for free?
No.
Would you invest your time in school to find something that you love to do?
I do that anyway.

If you're not doing something you love or that you feel has positive meaning for a career, do something about it. Get a better or different education. Explore what you do love and find a way to get into it. Don't allow yourself to be unhappy.

Easier said than done.

My current salary sucks so I'd probably just pick up a part time job either doing something I liked, or somewhere I could just fuck around all day and collect paychecks until they caught on and fired my lazy ass. Once the stress caused by the constant risk of fucking up and losing your job is gone, there's really nothing bad about work to me.

If I won the lottery it'd definitely be different. I'd never stay in one place long enough to have a real job.

I'm with you. Recently forced into retirement, I'm not ready to go back to work yet. Fortunately my investments are paying off and I don't have to work right now.
I would like to find something part time that I can do at my leisure, but right now the jobs just aren't out there.

Charlatan 05-16-2009 08:42 PM

If I didn't have to work, why would I? Why would anyone.

There is a big difference between work and a hobby by the way.

Craven Morehead 05-16-2009 08:49 PM

Having been unemployed since the beginning of March, I can emphatically say no fucking way. I'm busier than ever. However a fair number of hours are spent each day looking for another job. Once the initial stress wore off, its become enjoyable. No slacking and sleeping in. Each day is its own adventure. Sadly, sooner or later the stress and reality of not working will return.

ryfo 05-16-2009 09:17 PM

No i wouldnt work for monwy, that would be taking a job from someone who needs cash. What I would do is volenteer work.

Lasereth 05-17-2009 01:16 PM

Fuck no.

LoganSnake 05-17-2009 01:56 PM

Fuck no I would not work at my current job.

I would find something else and get the double check.

spindles 05-17-2009 03:43 PM

I know one thing - my golf handicap would drop. I'd travel more. The jobs I've been putting off because of time around the house (painting etc.) would get done. I'd get to spend heaps more time with my kids. Why would I keep working?

I'd definitely consider volunteering for something but may still want to work part time.

I'd cook more! :)

BadNick 05-17-2009 04:46 PM

Having by now spent 35+ years in the profession I'm in, I would take advantage of the situation and do something else. I would like to do something helpful at local schools or for local charity groups. I would also get into some major gardening and cooking for myself and my immediate family.

dlish 05-17-2009 05:45 PM

hell no...

i'd be far to busy being not busy to think about work.

not sure what i'd do, but as much as id like to keep my mind active, it wont be in my day job that i'd be doing.

i should get a hobby building model ships or something

SabrinaFair 05-18-2009 05:38 AM

If i got my current salary plus worked for money, I might be financially comfortable....I couldn't afford to live on my current salary. (I live thanks to generous parents and student loans--I am indebted in so many ways right now....)

Glory's Sun 05-18-2009 06:05 AM

I'd still work in the industry I'm in. I enjoy it and don't see that changing. I would just have more vacation time.

Iliftrocks 05-18-2009 06:58 AM

I think I'd work, but not for money. Volunteering would be fun, and special projects.

MSD 05-18-2009 08:23 AM

I'd have later hours, but I'd at least finish up this summer's worth of projects. I work at a university, and there are systems that would fail, having detrimental effects on the classroom experience for a lot of people.

If I won the lottery jackpot, I'd have a lawyer set up a blind trust from which I could draw money without my name being linked to it, with inheritances set up for family and friends in case of my untimely death. I would continue in my job after quietly paying off family bills and debts under the pretense that I had won a few hundred thousand dollars and not tell anyone that I had won a large sum, thereby avoiding people bumming money or trying to extort it from me. I would live modestly and donate generously to charities and community programs on behalf of people who I feel deserve recognition. I'd have a nice house and a few expensive cars, and take vacations with friends and tell them I'd won a trip for a bunch of people. I'd keep this job until I felt my work here was done.

snowy 05-18-2009 12:01 PM

I would spend my time volunteering instead of working for pay if I were able to collect a check for a reasonable sum that covered living expenses. I just really like helping people, and for me, I need something that gets me out of the house every day.

If I won the lottery, I would probably volunteer and do more philanthropic work; I'd like to donate a large sum of money to my alma mater for the College of Liberal Arts and the English Department (the silent workhorse of the university) and travel, of course.

roachboy 05-18-2009 12:44 PM

i'd do the the work that i work to be able to do except without having to piss away all the time working in order to be able to do the work i want to do.

World's King 05-18-2009 01:13 PM

I love what I do for a living.

And I actually do it for free a lot too.

CinnamonGirl 05-18-2009 02:56 PM

I definitely wouldn't serve if I didn't have to. I'd be okay with bartending.

Redjake 05-18-2009 05:03 PM

Doing my current job, hell no. But if I could do a job I actually enjoyed, then yes.

grumpyolddude 05-18-2009 05:31 PM

I'd work, but not at what pays my bills now. Music, and other creative pursuits, would dominate my time. Volunteerism would definitely come into play.

Wrexify 05-18-2009 07:36 PM

Absolutely not. I'd do things, sure, but you wouldn't find me in an office ever again.

CinnamonGirl 05-18-2009 11:49 PM

I'm surprised the poll is as close as it is. I voted no because I don't see doing the things I love as work... but I suppose in a different context, writing and singing for a living MIGHT be defined as work...

what do i have to do to get you to cook me dinner?

MSD 05-19-2009 04:32 AM

On big thing I forgot is that if I had enough money, I could get on my crash course to a PhD a lot sooner.

Poppinjay 05-19-2009 04:51 AM

I would volunteer for evil, and work to stamp out improper ampersands.

But mostly I would work for evil to overcome the planet and enslave all peoples of a certain race. That race would be the Indy 500. With them, I would rule the world, or at least a portion of a state. This is the dream of every evil doer.

nomcat 05-19-2009 05:03 AM

I love what I do, so I'd still do it... maybe just part-time so I can spend more time restoring and customising motorcycles.

ironpham 05-19-2009 05:07 AM

It's a tough decision, but I think I eventually would because I would start getting bored doing nothing. Maybe it won't be full time or 5 days a week. Let's keep it to 1 or 2 days a week.

Come to Colorado...

And I figured out of everyone here... you'd like my new avatar and signature...

hotzot 05-19-2009 02:19 PM

I'm at the age where I have enough to do with my hobbies and home. I would love to stay home and get a paycheck.

thespian86 05-19-2009 02:38 PM

I'd buy a theatre and run it. It would be a lot of work but it would be my dream job.
