The rise of national censorship systems referenced in the article is beyond worrying, it's terrifying. This raid isn't a matter of security or saving lives, it's backing up suppression of free speech with intimidation. Once free speech is restricted, there's no going back; it is a dangerous precedent to allow a governing body to decide what is acceptable for their citizens to say/write or to hear/read. Even worse is the fact that most people aren't going to hear about it, or it'll be a ten second sound bite about "German police raided the home of the owner of wikileaks' German site Tuesday after the site published a list of websites that contain child pornography. Free speech advocates criticized the raid, which German officials said is necessary to prevent the proliferation of child pornography." The site is a goldmine for leaked information that gives an insight into the inner workings of corporations, governments, and other groups. A lot of the time, this information is important to public opinion, but is kept quiet. I get paid tomorrow and I'm making a donation to wikileaks to help them continue their vital work. |
so basically, we have the government trying to keep it's dirt swept under the rug..

The proposed mandatory filtering in Australia has been a big news topic since our current government was elected. They are running an ISP level trial, but none of the larger ISPs are taking part (the third largest, IInet was going to take part, but has recently decided not to, as the trial was not going to be run in a way that they liked).
My place to sit and watch this? Whirlpool Broadband News - this is a large broadband users site and therefore has quite an interest in this area. |
Um, how do we fight this? I don't think paypalling them $100 is going to prevent the police from knocking down their doors.

If we're not in Germany, I think it's fair to say that the people in charge don't give a shit what we say. We can raise awareness (my intent here,) and maybe donations can help them with legal fees to fight this kind of thing in the courts.
