I went to the local Lowe's yesterday to buy regular old reliable bulbs and I was quite surprised that only one manufacturer, Phillips, had any kind of cautions at all on the outside of their packaging and nothing about putting CFLs in "enclosed" fixtures. In fact, the package of one of the brands shows a glass enclosed ceiling fixture like one might have in the bathroom.

Spouse said the cans we have are vented and suspended from beams, so there is some circulation, so we have to assume the bulb didn't overheat due to enclosure. While this leaves the possibility that it was just a fluke of a seriously defective CFL, it is enough to convince me not to use them. The next time might be the glass bursting or worse.

There are CFLs that look like regular bulbs and the only way I knew they were CFLs was by the ballast-the package said nothing about what type of bulb they were, only that they were "Energy Star".

We as consumers are, I am beginning to think, are being fed a load of bullshit about these things and we're chewing it like hamburger.
