Random gagging... happens to you?

I have this thing where for no apparent reason I sometimes start to gag. It's like I really need to barf but I never do.

Does anyone else have this? It kind of freaks me out.

highthief 12-04-2008 05:55 PM

Do you have any other symptoms? Like a bit of vertigo or something? Does it only happen at certain times of the day or in certain situations?

ratbastid 12-04-2008 05:55 PM

Are you eating or drinking at the time? Or is it just like a cat with a furball?

I had a similar sort of thing going on when I had acid reflux disease really bad and I'd get acid in my throat.

ngdawg 12-04-2008 06:44 PM

Acid Reflux or Hiatal Hernia could do it.
Improperly positioning yourself while attempting the Ron Jeremy manuever might too....:p

ROFL@ Cromp and ng.

I've had pretty bad AR for a long time and never had gagging. Not to say it can't happen, but that's a new one for me.

A hiatal hernia? I shudder at the thought. Could be though, if that is a possible symptom.

I hate to admit this, but the thought of someone walking down the street, then suddenly bursting into wild gagging or dry heaves makes me chuckle a little. Like a syrup of ipecac time bomb or something LOL

Charlatan 12-04-2008 08:23 PM

It doesn't happen all that frequently but when it does, it's just freaky. I don't think I have any other symptoms.

I am not usually eating or drinking. Sometimes it's when I am just sitting on the couch watching TV. I just get the feeling and wham. Gags.

I don't think this is reflux, a hernia or the spectre of Ron Jeremy (thankfully).

ShaniFaye 12-05-2008 03:45 AM

I've had it happen to me, usually when I havent eaten in awhile. Now that Im having to test my sugar every day, I've noticed that if it does happen, its when my sugar has crashed, dont know if its connected or not.

nomcat 12-05-2008 08:26 AM

This happens to my sister, and her doc said it's from low blood pressure.

I agree with everyone get it checked out, probably nothing but still better safe than sorry.

Did you have this issue when you lived in Canada? Maybe the air quality there? Humidity...etc

Lasereth 12-05-2008 10:08 AM

Holy cow I know exactly what you're talking about. In college, particularly my final 2 years, every other day (sometimes every day) I would randomly get the urge to gag. I wasn't nauseated or feeling sick either. I would be walking along and all of a sudden it's like your esophagus tries to get rid of something that isn't there. I got pretty good at disguising it across that 2 year time frame to where I didn't even have to open my mouth anymore.

When I got out of college it totally went away. I wouldn't want to think it was stress induced but that is the only link I can think of. Maybe altitude also (my college was high alt.).

percy 12-05-2008 11:43 AM

Get a blood test done. Not to alarm you but my cousin found that at certain times he would gag for no reason.Turns out the creatininine in his blood stream was very high and upon further tests it was found that he had kidney disease.

Are you thinking of Toronto when you gag. I think most people have those symptoms at such a thought. You know i'm kidding(half kidding)

I have returned from the depths of collegiate courses to comment!

On the more 'on topic' part of this post... My roommate had the same thing for a while, it only happened after he ate, from immediately to ~ an hour. He went in and the doctor said that he had acid reflux and the stomach acid was entering his lungs, causing him to gag. He grabbed some antacids and it went away. This could be the case...

Ayashe 12-07-2008 06:30 AM

I would suggest that you see a gastroenterologist(digestive health)or even an otolarygologist(Ear nose and throat doctor) I have known people with this issue. Often it is caused by esophageal stenosis or a tightening in the swallowing tube. They typically would stretch this out so that you wouldn't have the gagging issue. Sometimes this seems to occur more after laughing a great deal and often these people find they must clear their throats constantly as the swallowing of even simple saliva can cause issues. It certainly couldn't hurt to have it checked out.

Happens to me from time to time, only, I usually get a bit of barf with it.

Never spew, but that gawd awful burning in your throat and you hack and cough for 10 minutes trying to get rid of it. Drinking water makes no difference.

One time, it happened while I was asleep and it woke me up choking and coughing. Pretty scary. (Fortunately, I wasn't drunk and was able to cope with it - unlike one John Bonham of Led Zepplin fame.)

Doesn't happen too often, maybe once every 6 months. Never seen a doctor for it. Probably they'd just make it worse.

That clearly sounds like reflux. Untreated reflux can eventually erode the esophagus and cause an upper GI bleed which certainly can cause death. It can also cause other changes in the esophageal tissues which can lead to esophageal cancers.

blahblah454 12-07-2008 04:02 PM

Happens to me all the time. If I have not eaten for a while I start to gag like crazy, my mouth gets all watery and I come very close to throwing up.

It happens for no reason at all also, incredibly annoying.

This has been happening to me for about 2 years, with no instances before then.

This is what I'm missing out on by having no gag reflex triggers north of the esophagus? (doctors or nurses comment on it every time i have a throat culture) I feel lucky. I have acid reflux, but I've never had this happen.

No gag reflex? Seriously? If you are not doing so already, you could make extra cash as a sword swallower at any carnival/renesaince festival/fair/street corner.

Oddly enough, before this started occurring I had absolutely no gag reflex. Now mine is probably below average.

That's exactly what would happen to me. If it was night time, I would choke and lose my voice for 2-3 days afterwards. Mine was frequent, though. Funny how 90% of it cleared up after gall bladder surgery. Can't see how they're related.

Never had dry gags like Charlatan's, though. Except for when I step in dog poo.

Italianman137 12-09-2008 04:30 PM

lol that sucks but it must look funny when it happens. no offense
