Wanted: More TFP Moderators!
 

Hey there TFP! I wanted to let you all know that from way up here, things are looking good. We're seeing more average daily activity recently than in the recent past, so that means we're getting better. We've got a few policy changes as well as a lot of new features, so I hope everyone is enjoying their time.

We are looking for a few more moderators to fill out our ranks. The moderator job description has changed recently from an enforcer position to more of a community leader position. We're looking for users who can remain active on the boards and continuously work to improve the site through leadership-by-example. We want people who can participate in policy discussions and activity planning. We want people with a lot of energy and passion for nurturing a great community.

Here is what is expected of a moderator:

Duties:
1. Create new content on the forum: post articles, essays, stories, opinions, creative works and discussion pieces.
Frequency: At least 3 times a week.
2. Moderating debates by redirecting wayward discussion, dispensing advice, and in the worst cases, using moderator announcements.
Frequency: Scan the board for opportunities every day.
Protocol: If one moderator has taken action in a thread, you may participate in the thread only as a member. Emphasize maturity in all actions. Big problems may be escalated to an administrator.
3. Cleaning up spam, multiple log-ins, and duplicate threads.
Frequency: Scan the board for opportunities every day.
4. Participate in board policy and activity discussions in moderator forums.
Frequency: Scan the board for opportunities every day.
Protocol: Take initiative to start a discussion if one is not already taking place. Maintain mature discussion guidelines.
5. Guide and organize forum activities. This includes polls, posting themes, and games.
Frequency: Forum activities should be either weekly or monthly programs. Participate as often as activities are scheduled.

Goals:
1. Increase the rate of member participation.
How to accomplish: Create more opportunities for participation. Create comfortable environment for discussion and sharing. Take initiative to share first.
2. Increase standard of posting maturity and intelligence.
How to accomplish: Challenge users to create quality posts. Hold yourself up to higher standards than others. Exercise patience when responding to discussion.
3. Increase donations.
How to accomplish: Contribute to overall quality of forum. Maintain good personal standing with members. Remind users that donations are needed.

I nominate NoSoup and Elphalba. I feel both candidates exemplify the diverse culture, maturity, objectivity, and good sense conducive to being a GOOD MODERATOR.

Do I get to vote for both or only one? If only one, then I would like to submit my vote for NoSoup. But if possible, I'd like to vote for both.

Add: Can we recall moderators too? If we can vote them in, I assume we can vote them out too.

I don't read this as a nominate a person, the person must apply.

Why can't you just extend an offer to the person you feel would best be suited for the job and see if s/he agrees? A lot easier that way.

We did that last round and would like to try a different way this round.

However, you may regret it - If I'm selected I might try to make this a Souptatorship and hunt down every referance to soup in every thread ever made here on the TFP and change it.

might I make a recommendation? I've applied god knows how many times in 5 years and never once has my application been acknowledged....it might be nice for those that are not picked to at least take the time to tell them personally they werent picked before the announcement of new mods is made.....unless of course I was the only one that happened to lol

sounds somewhat appealing. the theme for me lately has been trying to get out of my comfort zones... i think being a mod would be considered out of my comfort zone. though, not sure if i should apply and jump right in since i've hardly been back...

The goal is to keep building off of what we have. More discussion is a must. Adding a few more voices to the policy discussions and board organization talks. We want people who act as community leaders, looking at the forum in a slightly different light.

Shani, I know Hal already responded to this, but it's something that we've recognized and are trying to correct. I THINK that we PM'ed all the applicants before the decisions were made the last two times to let them know one way or the other, but it doesn't always work that way. We do recognize that we need to do better with that and we're trying. I expect that all the applicants this time will definitely hear about it.

We get to create threads called "I hate LoganSnake" to make our complaints about you known. No one else, just you. It's part of the new "I Hate LoganSnake Mod Rules we adopted about 2 years ago." Seems to be working out pretty well, don't you think?

Really, no, we don't get anything other than headaches and complaints. And the occassional "boy, you really fucked up THAT situation." And the very, very rare "you guys do a good job. Thanks." type of PM.

Content people are quiet. If you don't hear from people, it's usually a good sign. I only rarely get "omg, awesome job at work today, Will" but when there is a complaint I get it from every direction. I see great decisions made and hard work done by the staff all the time. To be honest, I don't always drop a PM or chat to say I think so, but that doesn't mean you're not appreciated.

If this is an honest concern, maybe there are methods by which to improve communications between the staff and members.

Ah, then it sounds like the a regular modding job. Well, with added responsibilities of creating new topics.

And on the topic of hating me, I'm surprised you took note of me two whole years ago. I didn't think I was too much of a pain in the ass until recently. I was wrong! You just made my day. :)

LoganSnake, let me assure you that I've hated you since the day before you signed up for TFP. Even though I didn't know you then, I had that premonition. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at showing it, so I've been stuck on stealing the occassional sock from your dryer and leaving wads of gum on the sidewalk for you to step on. And even more unfortunately, I'm now accused of being a pervert because I have a collection of damp, unmatched socks and a sore jaw. Perhaps if I wore pants more often....

To everyone considering applying, don't be shy. We are not selecting you for your post count! It's worth a try if you're really interested. What we need is active people with a touch of creativity, and a touch of zen, who want to give back to the board ;)
