just got wisdom teeth out
i just got my wisdom teeth out (thursday) and i was wondering what the recovery time normally is?
like atm i feel good enough to run around and do excercises but my energy level is low due to the limited amount of food i can eat. I can't wait to eat some real food again, its just i can hardly open my mouth or chew anything  i hope to play basketball on monday night :D cheers for any additional input, or your experience on the matter. |
you should be able to eat soon enough.
you just have to remember to clean out the cavities where the teeth were after you eat. I will take awhile for those to fill in, but you should back to your normal habits soon. |
I had mine taken out just before I got out of the Air Force. They were after them for 8 years, then I decided to go ahead and let them remove them while I was still on Uncle Sam's dime. I was in the Security Police. As such, for the eight years I was active duty I could never get any drugs prescribed to me stronger than aspirin, due to being armed, and all that. They more than made up for that when pulled my wisdom teeth. I was so doped up...I had a blast the whole time. I barely knew where I was, but I was sure having a good time. They did an excellent job. Within two days I was eating pizza and polish sausage.
Like rogue49 already stated, keep those sockets cleaned out and irrigated with the little syringe gizmo they gave you. Failure to do so is the surest way there is to get an infection there, and that sucks. Just ask my ex-wife. She got lazy, didn't keep her sockets cleaned out, got an infection and was in some pretty severe pain for about a week. She was in even more pain when the dentist had to go in and clean them out for her. Keep 'em clean. |
ok, i think my circumstance may be a little different, cause they hadn't actually come through yet. When operating they cut away some of my gum and then hammered or chisiled the teeth out. Sounds drastic but i am pretty sure thats what they did it, ie no pulling out teeth. Being the case i don't really have any cavaties cause it is still just my gum, i think. Anyways thanks for the tips, i am very diligent about cleaning out my mouth now, with warm salt water.
Plus i just did some excercise/worked out, the problem now is i can't fit any substantial food in my mouth or chew it properly...yet. Damn that polish sausage and pizza sounds good right now ;) |
i had mine taken out last year, and I felt ok.. Although the morphine was quite nice ;) Only have small bits of memory that first day, but I felt pretty energetic, moreso than usual after sleeping for about 2 hours..
and it is true, every case is a bit different.. i had one severely impacted (right word?) and as such they had to cut it out, and it gave me a partially dry socket, which was kind of strange feeling, but just wash them out daily.. personally I found washing them out kind of amusing.. the feel of the water :) hehe |
That is so funny. I just got a wisdom tooth out yesterday. Today I am fine but that was only one tooth.
|
ok, i got all 4 out. The 2 bottom ones seemed problematic (in the way they were growing), but they decided to take em all out.
I feel fine, its just i want to eat a large meal (mainly pasta), soon.... all this sloppy soft stuff (yoghurt, stewed apple, custard eyc) is making me a little sick in the stomach... |
didja get any groovy pain killers?
|
ya man, i got more codine, i fucking love that stuff, and i got an extra refill because i had five wisdom teeth insead of four, strange, but good because i got more codine :)
|
man, i slept 18 hrs the first day, after I came home. I kid you not. came home, took a pain pill. slept. woke up 8 hrs later, got handed a pill and a glass of water, went back to sleep. woke up LATE that night to suck a bit of soup down (I was told NO STRAWS, btw, so be careful), and crashed again. finally got up the next afternoon, and discovered I had drooled blood down my boyfriends shirt. :/ Took me about 3 or 4 days till i was up to doing much more than eating the noodles in my chicken noodle soup 1 at a time. energy level went WAY up after I got off the vicoden, though. uf that stuff knocked me on my ass bad!

I got all 4 out on tuesday. All they gave me was big doses of ibupfrofen. it wasn't bad though. I can just now eat normally though because the swelling blocked me from closing my teeth together. I was fine by thursday though, energywise.
How long did the actual operation take for you? The guy that did mine specializes in wisdom teeth and a few other oral surgeries and from the moment he set his tool on the first tooth to the moment he finished the last stitch...he took a whopping 7 minutes. And in those 7 minutes, he got paid $1140. Hows that for an hourly wage. |
apparently the guy took 20 minutes, well that was the administrations estimate. Although i was the third in line of about 5 people getting it done on the morning, so maybe he improved and got better with each one ;)
i did get codine or pandine or something, but i haven't taken any yet, nor will i. I have anit-inflamtory and anti-bacterial pills as well, which i take. I havem't really been in pain, more just discomfort. Though I just washed my mouth out with listerene (mouthwash) and it feels great now. i slept for about 14 hours the first day, and then about 10 the next. Today, i have slept for 7 hours and am about to go to bed (finally) at about 4am, though i've been up since 8am. I think i was only drowsy the first day, day and a half becuase of the anesthetic. |
I had all 4 IMPACTED, pulled out..
that was the 2nd most pain i've ever gone thru since my lovely body is alergic to the two most common pain killers used in them cases, the one remainder being acetaminophen (weak shit) i wasnt able to eat solids for almost 8 days |
I think recovery time depends... I had all 4 teeth taken out a few years back and was eating "normal" food 2-3 days later, but I know people who have had 2 out and couldn't eat for a week. It's great though. General Anaesthetic is good fun :) The day of it was a bit of a blur, but I was alright the next day.

Four teeth out, plus a tumor and an impacted molar in the sinus, and I took a week to recover. I don't think you'll have to wait that long. Just make sure you put ice on your cheeks for about four hours after you get home, you can alternate 15 minutes onwith 5-10 off, and you won't have any swelling.
|
I'm going to have to get them pulled soon. I'm not looking forward to it. :(
|
ooh #1 best thing: those gel ice-packs that get uber-cold, but not stiff, so they curl around your face and jaw nicely. :)
|
i need to get mine out pretty soon, and i'm not looking forward to it. i've been avoiding it for a few years now. now its time to face the music. and cheerios: those gel cold packs do work great!

I got mine out in april. It sucked. I had four impacted ones that the doctor told me were about an 8/10 in difficulty. It took about 45 minutes and I woke up from the anesthesia about 1/2 way through them chiseling one of the teeth. 2nd only to a corneal ulcer in pain.
The recovery time for me was a little longer. I did it on a thursday, went back to work on a tuesday. I didnt stop bleeding till saturday, and couldn't eat anything at all until sunday. Thank god I had all 4 done at once, cause I never would have gone back if I had 2 done at a time. The one thing that sucks in my case is that even now, the right side of my tongue/cheek still has some numbness. They hit a nerve as they were doing it. It took about a month before even a little feeling came back. The drugs were pretty good. They gave me oxycodone which has a pretty good kick. I had to stop using them after a while because I was feeling waaay too high. Keep checking those holes though. You wouldn't believe how much food gets stuck in those. |
i had all four impacted.
i went under general... after the op, my face was totally swollen for about 3weeks. i looked like Fred Flintstone. nasty. |
