Are you an Angry Driver?

Well, are you? Are you a 'road rage' driver? Are you the reason people shouldn't have guns in cars?

I used to get pretty upset at silly things, cars following to close, guys cutting me off, cars in the HOV lane with only one person in them. I was even chased by a car of mexicans after I flipped them when they cut me off (oh that was a FUN day!) And Lord, how did I survive my youth??

While those things still bother me and probably always will, I've figured out that my road anger was just anger from other parts of my life spilling out during driving.

NoCure 04-21-2003 09:07 AM

I only get upset at the follow types of drivers

Cripples
Old People
Soccer Moms

If you are not one of these types of people, then I don't get mad at you...if you are I hope you stay the hell away from when I'm on the road

TaLoN 04-21-2003 09:10 AM

i pretty much get angry at anyone driving under 75 on the freeway.

phunktastic 04-21-2003 09:15 AM

Old folks going 10 under the speed limit swerving all over the road tend to make me angry. And tailgaters.

onodrim 04-21-2003 09:20 AM

For whatever reason, driving is the one area that I do get really mad. People just do such stupid things on the road sometimes :) But at least I only yell at them from inside my car, I've never flicked anyone off, or deliberately tailed them, or done any other such mean thing to them. :)

BBtB 04-21-2003 09:23 AM

I can get upset at some one but I never do anything stupid like flip them off or tailgate them. For one I am a self proclaimed pacifist and for two I am afraid they will be one of those idiots with a loaded gun in their car. What I DO do however is remember what happened and rant and rave about it later with friends.

Mr. Mojo 04-21-2003 09:28 AM

In New York, you have to be a angry driver. Some drivers go down whole city blocks in reverse just to get a parking spot...

snowy 04-21-2003 09:33 AM

Not much of an angry driver...although I do get pissed off occasionally...I told my mother that the most important skill I'd learned my first year driving was how to honk and flip someone off at the same time. She was appalled and told me I was going to get shot. Well, it's nearly four years later and I haven't been shot yet! :D I wouldn't, however, be surprised if other drivers got mad at me...I tend to be aggressive, and I drive a large truck with lots of blind spots. Tough combo.

hotzot 04-21-2003 09:35 AM

yes, the more late I get the angryer I become. Thank god I don't carry a gun when I'm driving!

ARTelevision 04-21-2003 09:38 AM

Not at all.
Driving is alpha waves all the way for me.
I'm happy as a clam driving my car.

shalafi 04-21-2003 09:43 AM

oh hell ya when i get on I95 on my way to work and i got the tunes blastin and some dumbass is driving slow and ruining my groove it pisses me off so bad my fingers are just itching for a gun. god dammit its the fucking interstate. if your not doing 85 or 90 the cops are honking for ya to get out of the way. I dont care if you wanna drive slow.....just get the hell outa my way!!! oh and dont even get me started on the moron bastard yankee bluehairs. what the fuck is so difficult about the concept of a turning lane????? will someone explain that to me? dont you people have these up north? It pisses me off to no end having some asshole moron sitting in the fast lane with their blinker on waiting to make a left turn and what the hell makes the ones that do use the turning lane think they need to slow down to 5 MPFuckingH before they get into it.

aaahhhh ( a few deep breaths) now i feel better. ranting seems to be rather therapeutic (sp?)

SaltPork 04-21-2003 09:46 AM

I used to be an angry driver, but since I've had kids I have changed my ways. I do revert once in a while, but only when I'm by myself. I've also taught my daughter to say,"Hey LADY!!! It's the one on the right!!!" That kills me when she says it.

Go_AVS 04-21-2003 09:46 AM

I get pissed off at people who can not:

- drive in the rain
- drive in the snow
- drive when it is too sunny

Okay, maybe I am an angry driver...

Mango 04-21-2003 09:48 AM

I'm not an angry driver, I just wish all those other fuckers would get out of my fucking way. God damned morons can't do anything right and are just out to make my life a living hell.......

Uh, sorry, what was the question?

gov135 04-21-2003 09:48 AM

My woman gets angry at me when I'm driving and shes in the passenger seat. That's scary.

fienna 04-21-2003 09:57 AM

cell phone swervers... i hate them.
anyone driving an SUV that cuts me off deserves a good whipping.
old people are annoying, but i don't hate them.
aggressive assholes that swerve between lanes and almost clip cars deserve castration, i think...

i dunno... in jersey, there are soooo many jerks, morons, and assholes on the road that it's a miracle we don't have more accidents then we do already...

fienna 04-21-2003 09:59 AM

in retrospect, one thing stands out though - listening to some really good music in the car does wonders for calming down road rage - hell, i'm a lot more laid back now then i was when i first started driving 10 years ago...

Daval 04-21-2003 10:01 AM

I spend far too much time in my car (35,000 - 40,000 km/year) to get upset at stupid things. It would cause me far to much stress in an already stressful life. I just try to anticipate the actions of people around me and drive accordingly.

sixate 04-21-2003 10:03 AM

I wouldn't be an angry driver if people knew how to fucking drive.

PorscheBunny 04-21-2003 10:09 AM

I have my term for it: Offensive Driving.

Without baby on board, I usually go 15-20 over the "speed limit". I don't need a FuzzBuster, I have female intuition, big breasts, and the ability to cry at will. :D

I slow down to ambient traffic speeds with Hellion in the car.

If you are passing as many as are passing you, you are going the safest speed possible, regardless of the speed limit. If ambient traffic is going 77 and you're driving 65 you are as hazardous as the nut going 91; drop to 60 and you're as dangerous as if you were going 99.

If you think conditions are too hazardous for you to drive in, get off my road.

My remedy for backseat drivers is a roll of duct tape sitting in my glove box. They have to put it over their mouth before they can comment on my driving.

Chug 04-21-2003 10:17 AM

hm... i only get pissed off driving occasionally, ie stupid drivers threatening to hit me or people in my car yelling and screaming at my driving skills! hehe
but usually, i am a happy and content driver... passive.

I need to be more aggressive! I am starting to use the horn more cuz once when some dude was backing his car out into mines, he couldnt' hear my horn sounds cuz i ddnit' push them hard enough... and as a rusult, a dent in my front bumper. *sigh

yournamehere 04-21-2003 10:24 AM

Yes - my wife is always pointing out how pissed I get while driving - I tend to think of it as a stress outlet, though - like I can take all my frustrations out on stupid moron drivers. I certainly never carry the anger with me once I'm out of the car

phoenix1002 04-21-2003 10:50 AM

I generally don't get pissed at other drivers. It just annoys me when I see someone with a nice car with turbo driving 10 miles under the speed limit on a 2 lane highway on a beautiful sunny day with almost no traffic. Of course it always happens in the no passing zones, too...

csx2002 04-21-2003 10:55 AM

people who do the speed limit piss me off,
"I'm doin a hundred on the highway, if u do the speed limit, then get the F*ck outa my way"!!!!
oh, that and people that just don't understand how to drive...most people just shouldn't get thier licences...

EbolaVirus 04-21-2003 11:05 AM

I get pissed off when riding with my parents. They both drive slow and my dad does not pay attention. Those are the types of drivers I hate.

ratbastid 04-21-2003 11:22 AM

I used to be pretty road-ragey. Lately, though, I'm just as happy to sit in traffic. I've got good music, I give myself plenty of time to get where I'm going, and the back of somebody's car is just as good to look at as open pavement.

Peetster 04-21-2003 11:24 AM

I keep a pretty even keel. Emotions behind the wheel will cause you to execute bad judgement.

This is exactly how I feel.

World's King 04-21-2003 11:27 AM

Not that it comes as a surprise but I am a very angry driver.

Denver is now the 4th worst city to drive in.

Lebell 04-21-2003 11:44 AM

I think it was Sienfeld who said, "You ever notice how it is that people who drive slower than you are idiots and those who drive faster than you are maniacs?"

I'm amazed at all the angry drivers out there. Why are we so angry, people?

Slims 04-21-2003 11:47 AM

Yes!
although I am not a violent driver.
All the stupid things other drivers continually do just get to me. Especially when I have to act to avoid them.

Recently I have been trying to calm down, but it only works for me until someone does something particularly stupid. Especially when it is snowing outside and everyone is driving too fast and losing control.

I am getting better though, and I have started apologizing to whomever is my passenger if I lose my temper, and that seems to help too.

Atropos4 04-21-2003 01:38 PM

alpha phi says we aren't allowed to have a gun in the car...i'd kill to many people...i'll admit it...he's right.....the one thing that pisses me off the most is tail gaiters....if i'm going 5 over the speed limit ....Leave me the fuck alone!!!!! i told alpha phi i want a sign in my car i can hold up when someone drives like an idiot...the sign would say "MORON" plain and simple
i also hate being behind someone that won't fucking turn when they've had like 20 chances!!!! this happened today ....so it's fresh on my brain...

SecretMethod70 04-21-2003 01:43 PM

If I'm not in a hurry, then I'm just fine. If I'm in a hurry though, I'm the driver angry drivers get mad at ;) I never do anything really unsafe - I'm not stupid about it - but that doesn't mean I won't go 20 over on an empty road or take every opportunity to move ahead of someone O:)

Same here.

Dire Baka 04-21-2003 02:26 PM

I have my music on and I don't care unless its something really stupid.

I don't like driving period except for the awesome sound system I have in my car

spanky spangler 04-21-2003 02:27 PM

Guns in cars...if they allowed that in the UK. I'd be 15-life.

I'm really not an aggressive driver, but i HATE it in others. You cut me up deliberately 'cos you feel like a king in you kraut-mobile; i'll follow you 'til you stop and then take the fight to the ground. And have done.

The thing that gets me is that twats in cars feel inviolate, and i like to get them and demonstrate otherwise.

So that'd be yeah, then.

JohnS72 04-21-2003 02:58 PM

I just laugh it off, it works- seriously.

K-Billy 04-21-2003 03:02 PM

I get angry when people drive slower than me and I'm in a hurry...or not in a hurry.

greytone 04-21-2003 03:10 PM

Sometimes I get angry, but I am working on it. When people follow too close, I pull off the the side of the road and let them pass. That really messes with their minds and they usually drive about 10mph under the speed limit for a couple of miles.

Ashton 04-21-2003 04:03 PM

One thing that really pisses me off is slow drivers.... especially the assholes that drive 55 in the fast lane right next to the car in the slow lane doing 54. And when you're at a stop light in the left turn lane and the light turns green, but the Ass in front of you lets everyone go so there's a two car gap before he/she takes off.... then the sensor picks up the gap and the light turns red right as said Ass makes it through and you get stuck at the light. Another thing is when you're merging onto the freeway from the onramp and no one will yield and let you merge until you run out of onramp and are about to run into them.... That happened to me a few days ago, I was getting on the freeway and as I was driving along the onramp this woman in a POS minivan decided she wasn't going to slow down and let me merge..... so we drive side by side until there is no more onramp so I just merge anyway.... she hits her brakes and then gets in the fast lane and comes up beside me and starts yelling at me in arab or something... so I just flip her off and call her a stupid Biatch.... Farking Foreigners are the worst drivers....

WhoaitsZ 04-21-2003 04:21 PM

hmm i get 'road rage' all the time, but i've never driven a car.... i am in an electric wheelchair.

i go as fast as possible while driving safely then bamo i'll get some idiot fuckwit walk in my way while seeing me 20-30 feet away and not move an inch. i try to move out of people's way but you wouldn't believe the balls of many people who just don't care.

makes me wanna get big foot tires... 'hey walker. walk on this, bitch!'

Yep, I started yelling/cursing/gesturing at other drivers after I came to Jersey...I'm in an urban area where people double-park all the time, traffic ends up swerving all over the road, people drive in the wrong lane, etc.
It's not deeply personal or anything, it can be kind of fun to yell at the idiots...satisfying for some reason, just part of the experience.

Macheath 04-21-2003 04:54 PM

I don't actually drive, but I am an angry cook - not frustrated angry, just aggression and letting off steam.

I do stay in control at the cutting board though...slicing my finger would just be a frustration. I'm a demon with a skillet.

sapiens 04-21-2003 05:24 PM

I get pissed off by:

-people who don't signal when they turn/change lanes
-people who don't understand that the left lane is for passing
-giant SUVs with only one person in them

My wife used to drive me around because I would get so pissed when I drove. I've gotten better.

I think I got the road rage from my dad. The first time that my wife rode with him, he started screaming and yelling at some other driver. He called him a "needle-dick" among other things. My wife was shocked. My mom started laughing at my dad. That made him madder.

Spanky Johnson 04-21-2003 05:28 PM

Not anymore.

I wasn't ever that bad, but would occasionally flip someone the bird if they deserved it. That all stopped about ten years ago on an interstate near Denison, TX. I was in the slow lane behind an 18-wheeler and decided to pass him, which involved getting in -- you guessed it -- the fast lane. I signaled and pulled over into the other lane. A car who had to be doing well over 100 mph to reach me that quickly (the limit was 60) came out of nowhere and got right up on my bumper. I passed the truck and got back into the slow lane, as I had always intended to do. As they guy who had been on my ass blew by, I flipped him off. He slowed down to match speeds and was hanging out his window yelling stuff like "Pull that motherf*cking car over! Pull it over!". I didn't think that was such a great idea, and just kept driving and tried to remain calm. Then the guy started veering into my lane like he would run me off the road. Finally when I didn't react to him he yelled something at me, flipped me off and sped away. That was the last time I ever flipped anyone off.

Cycler 04-21-2003 05:45 PM

Getting better but yeah I would classify myself as an offensive driver aways on the look out for idiots. Riding a motorcycle will either send you over the edge in a hurry as far as rage or calm you ass down. It has doen both for me at varying times.

QuasiMojo 04-21-2003 05:49 PM

Did you ever notice that people going slower than you are assholes and anyone going faster than you are FUCKING MANIACS
-George Carlin

that is sooo true. ya know i too used to get rrrrilly rrrrilly pissed-off while travelling the highways and bi-ways and took every boneheaded traffic offense as a personal INSULT. If someone were to cut me off I would likely speed up and try to blow their doors off... or mouth some fuming obscenity while feverishly pumping my arm in the air with my message delivered by my extended middle finger. It ain't worth it folks...it just takes too much energy. Now if someone wants to ride my ass I just pull over and let-em pass. I hate to admit though, that I harbor a secret fantasy that I'll pass them up the road after they wrap themselves around a pole and I'll just wave at their mangled forms and shout...Well....YOU GOT FAR...................................

Then I think of the times that I behaved rudely on the road and of the reasons that I engaged in automobile assholery.....
and I kind of calm down.

PS
Don't fuck with Trucks

Sensei 04-21-2003 06:35 PM

I'm not an angry driver (or person) at all, passensers have honked my horn for me when I get cut off. I figure if we all stop honking maybe there will be fewer asshole drivers. That and I don't live in SoCal.

warrrreagl 05-19-2003 10:12 AM

I commute 90 miles to work everyday, so my driving habits are governed by efficient mileage. If I drive exactly 55 miles per hour, I get the most out of a tank of gas.

Part of my commute is on an interstate with a speed limit of 70, so I can't possibly be aggresive there. The remainder is on a two-lane road with a posted speed limit of 55, but everyone else does 70. Therefore, I get blown off that road quite frequently, but I'm getting more patient in my old age.

Cynthetiq 05-19-2003 10:49 AM

i figure... once I leave my house... I'm in the land of the assholes... so I figure, I'm going to encounter them... so I detach myself from my desire of being asshole free until I get home.

ironman 05-19-2003 12:01 PM

I shall never have a pistol in my car... it would be dangerous for everyone including me.

afraidofninjas 05-19-2003 01:43 PM

I'm a passive agressive driver... I get pissed, but I hate honking or gesturing. I mostly swear loudly or sigh heavily. When I want someone to get out of the fast lane I will them out of the way by getting close until they get the point and let me do my thing. I then laugh at myself. I also invent insults on the spot... so at least I'm being creative.

Serpent 05-19-2003 01:47 PM

I don't get angry just disgusted.

apetaster 05-19-2003 05:46 PM

So long as people don't invade my space and follow the general traffic laws, I'm just ducky. Those who drive like retards I try to set up with a nice red light or pull out of a drive just a hair too late so they have to wait. Petty little crap like that makes my day.
For those Mass drivers who thinks that the interstate lets them become Mario Andretti and use all three lanes to weave, I'll be in the slow lane doing the speed limit just when you want noone there.

Agreed. Driven in NYC and drive in Chicago almost every other weekend. In these big cities if you are not a "fast/maniac/insane" driver then you are a hazard. Driving "insanely" does not mean reckless. You become reckless when you begin to disprove Newtonian laws of physics.:p

krwlz 05-19-2003 06:11 PM

i never go past flipping somewone off, and yelling a few "bad words"

gonadman 05-19-2003 07:18 PM

Soccer moms with cell phone glued to one ear, one or two infants/kids in baby seats, and swerving in and out, tailgaiting, going WAY too fast- that pisses me off. If they want to drive like an idiot, and kill themselves, go ahead. But don't risk the life of your innocent kids!
In my angry youth, I gunned my '68 chevelle to prevent some asshole from trying to cut me off. He swerved around me at the light, pulled in front, popped open his trunk, pulled something out, and was holding it behind his thigh while he pounded on my window, screaming in spanish. Well, I'm not sure what that was behind his thigh, but I near shit myself and learned to internalize my emotions while driving.
So, although those soccer moms piss me off, I'll take an ulcer over gettin shot anyday.

Leander 05-19-2003 07:59 PM

People as a rule are idiots(present company excluded) and that is a fact of life. I can't stand cabbageheads. Its like somewhere there is a senior citizen without a phonebook to boost them up. And why is it that almost every dumb piece of shit I get behind has a handicapped symbol dangling from their rear view mirror? I can barely walk yet I don't drive like a jackass.

MSD 05-19-2003 09:09 PM

I'm more passive-aggressive. I have never used my horn, and only flipped someone off once. Tailgaters bother me, but I've learned teh best way to deal with them if traffic is relatively light. I'll take my foot off the pedal and let myself slow to around 30. Once they get the point, they pass and give me dirty looks. I smile and wave. It's amazing how enraged people get over that.

People going too slow aren't a problem, either theres a passing lane or I'm not going so far that the extra 10 mph will make a big difference.

What enrages me is people who brake randomly or don't use turn signals (leaving the signal on for miles is just funny.) My mother brakes at anything. If a car a few hundred yards in front of her brakes, she jams on the brakes. If it looks like someone in front of her might be thinking of slowing down, she jams on the brakes. Being stuck behind people like that is torture, especially considering that if I hit them (unlikely, I give a lot of following distance) it's legally my fault, no matter what. People who don't signal are just dangerous, no other way to describe it. The other thing that really gets to me is when people assume that following distance is a place to cut in front of me. Two seconds is a good reaction time to distance ratio. Unfortunately, people seem to think that anything that doesn't cause dents is appropriate following distance. They cut in, I drop a few mph to give myself distance, and tailgating occurs.

I almost forgot, it isn't necessary to brake a half-mile ahead of time for exit ramps. I will usually be going 70 until the ramp starts to curve, half of the people out there are going 30 by the time they start signaling.

If I get mad, I just crank up the music and let myself calm down.

strife 05-19-2003 09:56 PM

NOT FUCKING FAIR.

I'm not really an angry driver, but I do swear at stupid people driving.

Things likely to come out of my mouth while driving:

"Nice turn signal, asshole!"
"Nice parking job, asshole!"
"Nice lane change, asshole!"
"Nice (insert driving action or lack thereof here), asshole!"

That's about the extent of my 'road rage'. My friend will make an effort to flick people off though, it's quite funny. Stick his hand out the window, honk to get their attention, then, *WHAM* The middle figure at full salute.
