Today's Woot is a Canon HV20 High Definition Camcorder that records HD to MiniDV tapes, and the deal looks absolutely fantastic.

Thing is, I've never owned a camcorder and I'm not really sure when I'd use one. I mostly stay at home and play video games when I'm not at work and I have no children to tape in their antics.

I also have no experience in film making and I doubt I could find anyone who'd act for me either.

But it just looks so cool that I can record things in HD and play them back on my TV via an HDMI cable.

Tell me there's a good reason I should get this..

If you're not sure when you'd use one...then you don't need it.

Thing with kids is, from my experience, they rarely perform their cute antics when I have the camcorder out. Only when it's on the top shelf of the closet, with a dead battery.

My girlfriend is very opposed to video and picture records of our antics, so I think that's out too..

You don't need it. It's a great deal today. But by the time you have kids or are okay with filming your porn or have a valid reason for purchasing it, the technology will be passe and/or the price will be lower.

When I saw it on WOOT this morning, I wondered briefly how I could manage to need it, but I concluded fairly shortly thereafter that I don't. And if there's no kids and no porn, you don't either.

in my experience..

Canon video = meh

DV video = shit

oh..and there is really something to be said about lenses. It doesn't matter what camera you have.. if the lens sucks..the video sucks.
