inBOIL 05-11-2008 09:54 PM

How did you choose your handle?

Mine is the name of a character from the book In Watermelon Sugar. It was one of the first novels I read that I could understand beyond the basic story, and inBOIL exhibited many of the flawed characteristics that I have when I'm at my worst.

What's the meaning behind your handle?

Fotzlid 05-11-2008 10:10 PM

Mine means absolutly nothing.
A few of us were stoned one day during a study period right after lunch in high school. We were making up new words and having a hell of a time doing it. This was one of the words I made up.
No idea why I still remember it.

Hain 05-12-2008 12:53 AM

I finally changed it to something universal. Sam Hain is the name, and ... something is my game...

I'll figure something out.

uncle phil 05-12-2008 02:32 AM

i'm right-handed and it's easier for me to pick up on that side...

mixedmedia 05-12-2008 02:47 AM

it was the name I used as a bookseller on eBay...I liked it, though, and it just kind of stuck with me

ObieX 05-12-2008 02:49 AM

Obie a nickname from an old name i used in other places, the X is a remnant of the old name.

Manic_Skafe 05-12-2008 03:14 AM

The first half is the result of experimenting with phenecyclidine and the other stuck from my days of being a teenage vandal.

jewels 05-12-2008 03:31 AM

Nothing more than a nickname.

BadNick 05-12-2008 04:01 AM

1. stumble into titty board here
2. notice other sections of this forum are interesting and decide to register
3. puritanical/catholic parochial warped morality background immediately suggests "Bad" due to the initial attraction, plus real name "Nick"
4. nothing a few extra minutes in purgatory won't change to "angel"

Herk 05-12-2008 04:56 AM

My pops wanted to me Hezikiah Zachariah Herkamer Sherwood. My mom told him, "No way," and I ended up an Adam. This earned me the nicknames Herk and Hezi. Both of these have always been my handles. Also, TheHerk sometimes; like in WoW and Enemy Territory.

dlish 05-12-2008 05:19 AM

i was dlishsguy previously..means absolutely nothing. especially since i didnt intend on staying on TFP for longer than a day. but then i realised that TFP was deeper than that and decided to lurk for a while and finally stay.

ive been dlish for a while now.. Jazz chose it after i asked TFP for alternatives

ĐiGiRed 05-12-2008 05:38 AM

A guy I used to go out with called me Digital Redhead 'cause I was always online.. and when I started using the name on forums people would call me Digi Red for short..

Manuel Hong 05-12-2008 05:42 AM

when I first found TFP, it was mostly a pron site (or so it seemed at the time waaay back in the fark days v.1), so I wanted my name to make me appear to be male. I didn't want to be harassed as one of the only female members on a board of hungry, horny wolves. I pondered for a long time before I came up with it and it really tickled me!!!
soon though, the mods (mostly Halx at the time) kicked the bad boys out and the TFP we know and love began to take form. Then I went through some mixed feelings about keeping the name, but it has rather grown on me. I must assume that there are quite a few people that don't know me that still think I'm a guy on this board, which is fine. It may scatter some gender bias...
Great idea for a thread...I look forward to reading the rest of the posts!

MexicanOnABike 05-12-2008 06:16 AM

This name goes back over 10years for me. an inside joke from french class with my friends. I just decided to use it since it's totally unknown. (no, I am no mexican.)

Leto 05-12-2008 06:20 AM

I'm a fan of Dune. I also like the character which is not central to the plot at first blush.

Eweser 05-12-2008 06:23 AM

I've raised sheep for ~15 years, it's a play on "user"name, and it's female. Now that I'm getting out of the sheep business though, I guess I need a new name....but I'm not very creative.

alicat 05-12-2008 06:42 AM

Mine is also a play on words. Obvious I believe. It's my first name and I'm a cat person (and dog, bird, fish person really, I'm an equal opportunity pet lover:) ). Apparently I'm not that clever based on how many times it's taken already when I sign up on sites.

snowy 05-12-2008 06:59 AM

Mine is a reference to Hedwig, Harry Potter's owl. I didn't want a name actually involving the name Hedwig, as at the time the movies hadn't come out yet and my thought was that some people might mistake a reference to Hedwig the owl as a reference to Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and that was totally not what I was going for.

Jinn 05-12-2008 07:06 AM

Jinn from Djinn, an Islamic concept of "evil genies" who meddle in the affairs of humans. Also a summon in the early Final Fantasy II days, was either Ifrit or Jinn depending on the translation.

Kai from randomly mashing the keyboard when Jinn was taken on an MMORPG I played at the time. It just stuck. Turns out it's a word with a lot of meanings - my favorite being a 'type of throat singing used by indigenous peoples.'

Tully Mars 05-12-2008 07:47 AM

Tully Mars is a character in a couple of Jimmy Buffett's books. In "A Salty Piece of Land" Tully moves to the Yucatan having been a landlocked cowboy in the cold north. I've never been a cowboy but I have felt landlocked over the years. When I moved to the Yucatan the handle seemed fitting.

ratbastid 05-12-2008 08:09 AM

Cagney homage.

Willravel 05-12-2008 08:17 AM

Mine was already tattooed on my scalp when I was born, fulfilling the first of many prophesies.

spectre 05-12-2008 08:29 AM

Initially, I didn't think I'd be here for very long, and it seemed like a good idea at the time. Now, I think more people know me by this name here than the one I usually use online, but I've gotten used to it and like it.

canuckguy 05-12-2008 08:38 AM

I'm a Canadian and also a dude...

use to be brian1975 but wanted something new.

RetroGunslinger 05-12-2008 08:47 AM

I was getting a new email because I hated with a passion what I had used all the way back when I was like 12 or 13, ultimamk, so I kept putting different names in and they were always taken. Then, I thought: what are my favorite things? I like westerns, and I like old shit, so... retro_gunslinger@yahoodotcom baby! Then, because I'm completely OCD, I used it for all of my online handles, unless it didn't fit (The Phantom on Joblo.com and SomeKindaNinja on XBox Live).

Starshine 05-12-2008 09:09 AM

My friend randomly just started calling me Starshine, and I like it, because I like star shapes.

lotsofmagnets 05-12-2008 09:47 AM

needed my 1st nick about 4 years ago and this just came to my head. it´s a reference to a simpsons episode where skinner dreams of using magnets to detain misbehaving children. the sub-nick of lom has already started to make appearances here i´ve noticed.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.

roachboy 05-12-2008 10:01 AM

roachboy is a mistake.
i meant to reference kefra, the egyptian dungbeetle god who turns the ball of shit that is the world and makes time happen by doing it. i forgot kefra was a dungbeetle and substituted a cockroach for it.

dungbeetleboy doesn't scan.
cockroachboy is tedious

roachboy i remember.
everyone remembers it.
i imagine because folk think who they take me to be as the kind of guy who'd wake up early after a party and go through the ashtrays looking for wake-n-bake munitions.
but i don't wake up early.

it's a meme

cj2112 05-12-2008 10:19 AM

cj for my initials...2112 for... well if ya don't know, google it.

Punk.of.Ages 05-12-2008 10:37 AM

My brother was listening to Def Leppard when I made my handle.

I hate Def Leppard.

So, I made a handle in reference to them....

Irony?

P.S. What has seven arms and sucks?

an octopus minus a tentacle.

I opted for a more "male" version of the name.

if you look closely at the year of the card, you'll see how long I've had the name.

ring 05-12-2008 12:09 PM

Frantic last effort at typing in something not already 'spoken' for.

Eh...the fact it has many shades and variant definitions mighta
had a little something to do with it also.

Dude, that is so bad. Hilarious, but bad.

Martian has a long and complicated history. It represents an evolution of online aliases that began over a decade ago. I use it now because it's reasonably unique and usually available, and also because I feel that it represents several aspects of my character quite well (chiefly my love of astronomy and cosmology and my oft-felt impression of being an outsider in the game of life).

Also, it lends itself to making a few different jokes. I like jokes.

Beat me to it. Love Dune et seq.

For me - Daniel is my name (not usually Dan or Danny) and most places "Daniel" is gone, so I got into the habit of adding _ to make it allowable. Didn't even look to see if there was a plain Daniel here.

I started out on several fora (many) years ago as "Wowbagger" - I felt attuned to a guy who travels space randomly insulting people in alphabetical order - it interested the rude and the OCD parts of me; but I moved on after a while.

I was Lazarus for a while after I was the only person that came back to a forum after a prolonged and vicious flame-war, but that was only a joke.

I find that as "Daniel_" I tend not to slip into posting as an alter-ego, so I'm more myself and more honest when I'm flying my true colours.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_%28DC_Comics%29

I'm a fan. Unfortunately when The Matrix came out 80 billion people started using the name Morpheus, so I mixed it up a bit and started to use a zero instead of the O.

PonyPotato 05-12-2008 02:25 PM

Mine means "Jupiter Pony" in Welsh (or, really, pony jupiter because of how they order words..).

You are correct. I wiki'd it. I was under the impression Def Leppard had four members and, apparently, so was the person who originally told me the joke.

monokrome 05-12-2008 02:44 PM

Hmm...

Simplest of color schemes is monochrome. I like keeping things simple, and I like replacing hard `c`s with hard `k`s.

So, monokrome it is!

Lindy 05-13-2008 08:32 AM

It's a diminutive of my last name. Like Pete for Petersen. My given name is Sophia, which I absolutely hate, :grumpy: and avoid using as much as possible. Lindy is also my Dad's nickname, (which leads to occasional confusion when I visit home) and I laid claim to Lindy early to keep one of my brothers from using it. It's been my nickname since I was a child. It's also pretty much gender neutral. I like it.:)
Lindy

dd3953 05-13-2008 10:31 AM

It's my email address, and the handle I've used for 98% of the website I've joined since 2000.

My first name starts with a D and so does my middle name. And if you dial the number "dyke" in your phone you will see the numbers 3953 (which is also part of one of my tattoos). So there you have it dd3953.

abaya 05-13-2008 11:48 AM

Think I've told this story before, but oh well.

Ktspktsp brought me back a beautiful abaya (a really nice, embroidered houserobe--NOT the abayas that women in Saudi Arabia wear from head to toe) from Lebanon, the first year that we were together... also the first of 2 years of our long-distance relationship. I lived in a basement apartment at the time and froze my ass off in the winter, so I wore the abaya almost all the time when I was at home, to keep warm and to feel a little bit closer to ktspktsp. I joined TFP during that winter, and was wearing it most of the time while posting.

Sometimes I wonder if people ever think that I'm a Muslim woman or something when they see my handle... to be honest, the thought never occurred to me at the time. I just loved my cozy abaya from my boyfriend. Anyway, it stuck. :)

Lucifer 05-13-2008 12:17 PM

When, like so many others, I stopped lurking on the titty board and starting posting in other parts of the forum, I used the handle Prince of Darkness, just cause I thought it was badass (which I am incredibly not) and a cool handle to have on what was essentially a porn forum. After the server died and was reborn, I tried to re-register Prince of Darkness, but for some reason, it wouldn't let me, so I nabbed the handle "Lucifer" instead, partly for it's connection to the first handle, but also cause it's a way cooler and way more badass handle.

ratbastid 05-13-2008 12:24 PM

I didn't choose my handle.

It chose me.

thanks for the feedback... I drink from the water of life!

My original system login ID back in 1988 (for work) was my first two initials plus the first two letters of my surname, which turned out to be:
JEDi.

I've always liked that, but find it difficult to register this handle without adding several numbers. So, Leto kind of spoke to me. I guess I'm a geek.

StellaLuna 05-13-2008 01:58 PM

My favorite picture book, about a little baby bat who tries to be something she isn't.

Grasshopper Green 05-13-2008 04:48 PM

My hair has been, at times, the bane of my existence. I like mythology. The name was inevitable.

Speed_Gibson 05-16-2008 01:02 PM

I pulled from the same source that I use for all of of mine online handles (and a good portion of passwords) - the Golden Age of Radio. I chose the juvenile flyboy (not a bad series at all) over the western character name that I use on Opera and other places.

Strange Famous 05-16-2008 02:23 PM

named after a rapper.

Im very impressionable, if I had joined at a different time I might have been:

Indrid Cold
Mr Wednesday
The Gull Catcher
The Struggler
The Word King
Alyosha
The Half Blood Price
Fever Dreams
Imploding Lights
Things That Can Break
Champagne Chris Kanyon

etc etc

nowadays I think I'd just pick Adam

Jenna 05-16-2008 10:31 PM

Honestly, I never thought I would get connected to this site so I used a name that I used when I was young, and thought it was cute to be called Jennaboo... then to make it even more stupid, I added the 4u. Real clever.

I should probably change it.

dlish 05-16-2008 10:40 PM

Jenaboo...

u've joined the long list of people who joined without the intention of staying.. welcome to the club!

if u do decide to change, dont do a drastic change..its always good to keep a part of what you were...

i have no problem with jenaboo

abaya - when i first saw ure handle i knew it was a lebanese thing..cos most people in the middle east call it by other names. we call it abaya in my household.. but i did think u were lebanese initially..at least i was close anyways.

Ha! That's funny. I guess I thought it was called an abaya in other places, too (Iraq, Saudi, etc) but I could be wrong. That's just how American journalists tend to write about women's clothing in those countries, I noticed later on (wearing an abaya).

Anyway, yes, you were close... married to a Lebanese (and he doesn't have an abaya himself, actually!). :)

grumpyolddude 05-17-2008 07:31 AM

My standard reply: "ask the people who work with me."

Real story goes back several years ago, when my oldest son got interested in bowling, we used to put nicknames into the scorekeeper, rather than real names. My son was, and still is "Slimmy Hoffa." Craig was "Big Shirley" (an old sit-com reference). There was "Tdub", "Smoooooooth", "K-Mac", "Big Ern" (now "EAZEE"), and me, the "Grumpy Old Dude." Bowling scorekeepers display initials, so I was on the board as a bowling GOD.

These days, I'm a little bit mellower than I was, but I can still channel "Grumpy "when the situation calls for it!

Plan9 05-18-2008 01:50 PM

It's everything I was and am now and probably will be.

Just crammed together into one word.

speshul-k 05-20-2008 06:04 AM

Anything else I wanted was taken, so I randomly picked something unlikely.

CinnamonGirl 05-22-2008 05:06 PM

Tirian 05-24-2008 03:40 PM

Tirian is a character in the Narnia books, the last King of Narnia, who has to defend his kingdom against subversion and invasion. He is well-respected by the Narnians, and a skilled swordsman. He is descended from Prince Caspian, and the son of King Erlian. His closest friend is Jewel the Unicorn.

MoonDog 05-25-2008 05:51 AM

Ah, MoonDog is just a name I picked up when I played footbal in high school. It just kind of mutated from the name of a place close to where I lived.

levite 05-25-2008 07:40 AM

I belong to a bunch of religion/spirituality/magic/occult boards, all under the handle Levite, which I picked for the simple reason that it's a factual description. I have lineage from the Tribe of Levi (with occasional exceptions, the only one of the 12 Tribes of Israel that still tracks its descent), which is the priestly tribe. I actually found the conversations on this forum first, specifically the philosophy board, so it seemed appropriate.

On other boards/sites, I go by/have gone by: Taliesin, Llassar (I have a thing for Welsh legendry), SwordBoy (one of my hobbies is broadsword fighting), JokerSmokerToker12, DistantShip (as in, the one on the horizon, "Comfortably Numb"), TongueThing (it's a gift), BigHairyJew, and HornyOlJew (both self-explanatory)....

joseph 06-15-2008 01:48 PM

On other web sites, Joseph is usually taken. I use Fafafofo, which is a variation of Bababooey from the Howard Stern Show.

sapiens 06-15-2008 02:10 PM

I didn't think much about my choice. At the time, I was looking for a biological reference. On other sites I have been Mullersrachet (another biological reference).

radioguy 06-15-2008 06:35 PM

when i found this site, i was in radio...therefore, i was a radioguy...

khe1138 06-16-2008 08:52 AM

I chose mine because I'm a George Lucas fan, and one of my favorite movies is THX1138. So I just substituted my initials for THX.

The Faba 06-17-2008 02:29 PM

It's my name, with a 'The' in front.

Amaras 10-29-2008 06:01 AM

How did you choose your online nickname?

I've always been curious about how people choose their own nicknames,
passwords, etc...
Since I'm not going to ask you about your passwords (but if you insist on
telling me please PM it to me ), how did you choose your nickname?

Mine came about back in the mists of time when I was still drinking.
Grolsch is a Dutch beer which comes in a really neat bottle with a kind
of flip top lid.
See it here: Excellence in brewing since 1615......

Basically, I was trying to enter a nickname, and it kept coming up
"already taken" or whatever. Monkeyboy was one choice, as when I
used to run warehouses in my youth I was known for my fearlessness
when it came to climbing up racking (hey, I was drinking back then).

Cap'n Crunch was another. I got that one playing football. Named Captain
of the football team my senior year. I was a running back, and three
opposing players were carried off the field on stretchers that year
while trying to tackle me (again, I was drinking/using at the time, I'm not
proud of what happened).

So I chose Grolsch, thinking in my naivete that few others would know
what it is.

Your story?

SabrinaFair 10-29-2008 06:48 AM

I wanted something that invoked classic beauty and charm--qualities I would at least *like* to possess. And I find the character Sabrina Fairchild to be one of the most charming characters in dramatic literature. My handle was technically inspired by the play, not the movie, but really, who is more classically beautiful and charming than Audrey Hepburn.

Poppinjay 10-29-2008 06:52 AM

Absolutely 100% randomness.

ottopilot 10-29-2008 08:11 AM

It was the name of one of the short-lived bands I played in. We illegally used the image of the guild navigator from the movie Dune. The picture we had was great... but this was the best I could find.
http://www.24liesasecond.com/site2/i...eNavigator.jpg

We decided his name was Otto and that he was a pilot. It was amusing to imagine how he spent his down-time, his dating life, his parents, 12 step spice-anonymous, etc.

"spinelust" was born from a conversation I was having with my ex one night in college. We were discussing the erogenous zones assigned to our respective zodiac signs, and the spine was one of mine. Months later I was sitting at my desk trying to come up with an alias for a new email address. For some reason that conversation popped into my head, followed by the name.

Hyacinthe 10-30-2008 07:54 PM

My user account name for an online game I played was BalletHippo - very drunken night with my sister trying to pick usernames for wow and not being able we started putting in random objects, we were watching Fantasia and well yeah ...

So turns out the Hippo in Fantasia was actually named Hyacinthe - so there we go my handle on TFP. Almost all of my alternative names have turned out to be flowers now so it's developed it's own theme :)

When I was a kid I liked Star Wars. Being creative, my online alias was Skystriker.

However, when I joined a role-playing game once I realized that this was not always appropriate for a name, so I wanted to think of something more fantasy oriented. Well, I was raised Christian and had read up on angelology at some point for some reason (probably just browsing the net) and heard of the name 'Jolrael' that was an angel. I thought it was a pretty if zany name and figured I'd make mine a bit more unique, so I inserted different consonants all the way through the alphabet, and knew I liked the name Jozrael (especially since the shortened version Joz, which everyone online seems to do to names, I particularly liked).

I've slowly been shifting my aliases from Skystriker to Jozrael over the years, though my gaming names tend to still be sky oriented, if not Skystriker. It holds a special place in my heart.

Merlin - the wizard (wise, powerful)
Locke - the thief (swift, cunning, playful)
Merlocke

Hoping that I can pull off the witty smart ass who actually knows his shit persona.

Plus in there, is the phonetic sound of my real name. :)

Well, I used to be OshnSoul.....then i left for quite a while, going through transitions in life...then came back...but I forgot my password but decided to start all over with a new name.

After what I've been through and experienced, I understood more about my element- Fire. I am of the Fire element, but I have this deep passion for & connection to water (hence, OshnSoul). To me it represents the many substances of me. Not that I'm a confused person, but I have experienced unbelievable confusion in the past, wondering Who I Was. And the whole Fire/Water thing really hits home for me.
