The Effect of CoD on Real Life

So I'm sniping away in Cod4 this afternoon, listening to the usual cries of "camper" and other epithets, and I was wondering what effect realistic (I'm supposing) war video games have on real life combat, if any. Are there soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan yelling things like "camper", "noob" or "headshot" while in combat? I don't know anyone personally who has been to war recently, so I figured we had enough current and ex-soldiers who could tell all.

Well there was a clamor for the juggernaut perk early on in the war, but when they switched to hardcore it turns out it really wasn't all that useful.

Now they are asking for stopping power to be added to the M16, and they had to turn off martyrdom since friendly fire was set, so they are going with steady aim.

Oh! sorry, I was actually being serious.

I think they desensitize people to killing to a certain extent, and may help tactically a bit, but those are wild ass guesses.

Also, I believe the pentagon funded that game called America's Army if I'm not mistaken. Maybe that says something?

Crompson where are you??!?

As far as these games (havent played CoD4, but I play CS) go, when I watch war movies it makes me want to play some CS. Never been in a real war though

I can play COD4 all day long and kill hundreds of thousands of people, but when I pick up my .45 in real life, things become a lot more serious. It's pretty compartmentalized, and I've never had the desire to anything from COD4 with a real life-and-death gun in my hand.

Lasereth 03-06-2008 03:25 PM

Shooting a gun IRL is so different than a videogame that you can't really compare the two. In a videogame you're manipulating a UI to do your will. In real life there's your body controlling what happens. You get tired, you shake, you get nervous, you get adrenaline bursts...there's really no room in your mind to even think about a videogame when shooting a real gun.

I agree with Lasereth and JinnKai, I don't see them as similar at all. As to the actual question, whether people call out various things during battle, yes they do. It's tactical. We aren't going in stealthed and silent. They know we're there as soon as we know we're there. We yell all kinds of shit to each other as we clear buildings and the like. *shrug*

I know people who call others "noobs" regularly, and the last time my brother was at the shooting range with me, it went something like this:

Me: (aims, fires, enlarges hole in target's head)
Steve: BOOM, Headhot!
Me: Steve, shut the fuck up

Me: (aims, fires, enlarges hole in target's head)
Steve: BOOM, Headhot!
Me: Steve, shut the fuck up

Me: (aims, fires, enlarges hole in target's head)
Steve: BOOM, Headhot!
Me: Steve, shut the fuck up

Me: (aims, fires, enlarges hole in target's head)
Steve: BOOM, Headhot!
Me: Steve, shut the fuck up

for about 20 minutes

As per WillRavel's request:

Aah, I can't do it anymore. Enough lame PTSD stuff.

A-stan, 2006. We used to network our laptops together and play "Battlefield II" at night during the "Sorry, uh, you guys can't work right now." periods of a couple of days between missions. It was only for an hour or two once a month (more during the end of the deployment), but it was hella fun.

I think the gamer vocabulary is something you develop as a civilian playing games. Soldiers don't use such things. They use real army vocab. We always used army slang to describe the situations developing in the game.

Kinda easy to do since we did all that stuff in real life. Running, shooting and not hitting shit, hiding in FOBs, etc.

Ya know... except respawn after we got blown to bits by an IED.

...

Lame answer but I hope it helps.

Oh, I'm right here, brother.

I imagined what Crompsin said as being the case.

Think about driving games. Do any of you bring that stuff into your cars?

I think the driving games to be a lesser example, but maybe you get the idea. I don't think I'd try to drift or aggressively weave in and out of traffic like that, but maybe it's just me.
