because humans are flawed and it's the first the we can see and judge someone by.

??

Assuming of course that you have normal functional eyesight: before you get to know someone, the thing you most associate with them is what they look like... it forms the essence of your image of them. You recognise someone more readily by what they look like than, say, what they sound or smell like (we'll leave taste and touch out for obvious reasons).

Well, there's always evolution and sexual selection as part of the explanation, for good or ill (I'm surprised Ustwo hasn't beat me to the punch on that one).

Ustwo 02-11-2008 04:05 PM

Being too good looking can be an issue but it sure beats being ugly.

Sort of like one of my favorite sayings.....

Money can't buy happiness but lack of it can sure make you miserable.

What, you mean you don't lick everyone you meet?

Suddenly I'm understanding what all those cold stares and uncomfortable silences were about...

You should at least get their name before licking them. That would just be rude.

Oh, and it's probably important where you lick them too (as in on their body, not whether you're on a street or in a park).

Complaining about things like this is like complaining about the sun rising.

You can do it all you want, but it'll still be there come morning.

Paq 02-11-2008 06:16 PM

i thought you were supposed to sniff their butts....

DOH!!!!!

Still, i'm with "I've been rich..i've been poor..rich is better"

Ie, use what you got, don't knock it. As a self proclaimed ugly person, I can say i'm a bit jealous of those who get by just on their looks

savmesom11 02-11-2008 06:37 PM

I am poor and hot....hot is better, but I wonder what rich is like?

On a somewhat related note, 'I get by on my looks' is the excuse I use whenever I do something stupid.

lktknow 02-11-2008 09:39 PM

I guess Seaver just about said it all, although I wasn't really complaining about it. Just sort of venting on the wrongness of it sometimes. I have noticed it many times through my lifetime, and didn't like it then, and don't much care, for the injustice of it now. I was given jobs, when the other person applying had better qualifications than me, even quit a job once (out of anger) because they were going to fire another person, and I deserved to be fired a lot more than she did. It has always been a thorn in my side.
I think I have reached a point in my life where I think I am supposed to understand these things, and it just escapes me. If you are supposed to gain wisdom with age....??
Although having lived my life as one of the more attractive persons , it comes as a shock to me when something like this happens: A few weeks ago, I took the bus somewhere, and was not feeling too good that day. When I got on the bus, it was packed, only one seat open. As I walked towards it, a nice looking young man was sitting in the seat beside it, he put his hand over the open seat, and said, "Don't even think about it". I just grabbed the pole, and waited until someone else got off. But, it actually struck me as comical, in a way.??

filtherton 02-11-2008 09:56 PM

I don't think i'm ugly, but I don't really spend a lot of time wondering if anyone else does either. I'm glad i'm not the spitting image of attractive, it makes me work harder. Plus, I don't have to put up with all the disrespect that being attractive gets you- I don't mind never being called a pretty boy.

Is it more wrong than, say, the social advantage of being born into a family with more money or a higher social class? It's not your fault. You have what you have, you do what you can with it.

I'd say if you feel aggrieved by it, improve yourself in other areas of your life. Why does the world dislike Paris Hilton? Because she was born into money (and, arguably, good looks) and gets by on it with no attempt to actually use it to good advantage. Compare with someone who is born into money, decides to work hard and do well for him/herself, and achieves something in his/her own right. People may still think they were only successful because of what they were born into (the same way people might assume things about you because of your looks), but who cares about them? At least THEY know they've made the most of it instead of resting on their laurels.
