Shittiest job on the planet...

Quote:

The suspect accused in the murder of 10-year-old Holly Jones made a short court appearance on Saturday, and authorities went through great lengths to stop the media from seeing him.

Reports said that 35-year-old Michael Briere, a software developer, had dark hair and seemed to be wearing business clothes. But he was hidden from view by about a half-dozen court officers, while he sat in the prisoner’s box to learn that his case has been remanded until July 2. (Police have asked the media not to show pictures of the suspect.)

He seemed to be about average height and might have been a bit overweight. He’ll make his next court appearance via video link.

Briere was arrested early on Friday at his west-end home, close to Holly’s residence.

The arrest came after an intensive 40-day investigation executed by the police.

The search for a killer started after Holly's dismembered remains were found on May 13, a day after she went missing.

Meanwhile, not much is known about Briere. He grew up in Quebec and moved to Toronto after graduating from high school.

“Always alone too,” said Paul Santos, who is from Briere’s area. “Never see him with anybody else. Average guy, clean cut, short hair and everything.”

Sources in the police said that small green fibers and DNA from Holly’s fingernails eventually led to the murder charge.

Police Chief Julian Fantino is saying there is no evidence that Michael Briere and Holly knew each other. Forensic officers are still going over the suspect's home with a fine tooth comb in the hunt for evidence. They'll likely be there for several more days.

This sick bastard is accused of kidnapping, murdering and dismembering a 10 year old girl in Toronto.

I think about those half dozen court officers that surrounded this pedophile and the job that they were performing. Obviously, the public in attendance in the courtroom were not under any threat from Michael Briere. It is easy to conclude that they were present to shield the accused from the public and possibly protect him from harm.

Can you even imagine taking a bullet for this sicko???

It is a better person than me that can stand beside this piece of turd and refrain from throttling him, let alone protecting him.

YourNeverThere 06-21-2003 08:57 PM

that would suck suck suck. I guess you just have to be very passionate about justice being fulfilled

Bob Biter 06-21-2003 09:04 PM

The reason that "sick bastard" was surrounded is because he is a suspect, not because he was found guilty of this heinous crime. If he is indeed found guilty as charged without any doubt, then I would fully endorse the most severe punishment upon him. However, since his is the only suspect, the court wants his physical identity protected in case he is found innocent and set free. If he is actually innocent (although that would seem unlikely in the case of a DNA match), I bet he still would have a hard time reintegrating society if everyone knew not only his name, but what he looks like.

This is why I understand and appreciate the actions of the police. He hasn't been found guilty yet, so there's no reason for his face to be posted everywhere with potential libel.

forseti-6 06-21-2003 10:44 PM

Another shitty (or maybe sick) job would be the attorney trying to prove that guys innocence knowing all the evidence is against him...

mathias3 06-21-2003 11:03 PM

Hang the bastard high, high, high. Maybe they'll make up to the poor dudes surrounding him by letting them throw the lever to end his crappy little life

PieceOfCrap 06-22-2003 06:28 AM

Totally agree with Bob Biter. Until he's proven guilty he deserves to be presumed innocent (or did I miss something about the definition of democracy?). It's only if he's found guilty that his nuts should be torn off and he should be dropped feet first into a chipping machine. :-D

Mind you, the police have been known to fake DNA evidence before in order to secure a conviction in a case that has outraged the public...

manalone 06-22-2003 12:53 PM

He is innocent until proven guilty. Furthermore, I would be glad to be his defending lawyer and represent him.

After all, if he's found guilty well then we know for sure he deserves his punishment.

If he's found innocent, then an inncent man has been protected from a probable lynch mob.

fleep 06-22-2003 03:35 PM

The thrust of this post is about the police and less about the suspect,I will comment on the police. For one thing police voluntarily choose their profession. They are not drafted.I was drafted in 1974 and served in the US Army.I was exempt from service in Viet Nam because two of my brothers where in the war zone at the time.So you think those cops have it tough standing around a courtroom?Try being 19 years old, half a world away from home, brought up to respect people and then forced to kill an enenmy wearing rags. For 14 cents an hour. Now that's a shitty job. Also there are two kinds of cops.Cops on camera and cops acting on their on interest.

oblar 06-22-2003 08:02 PM

i would tend to agree with fleep..

being drafted against ones will to fight for a cause you are actually against would probably be the suckiest job.

the only thing suckier than that would be to be forced to fight for a side in a civil war and face your family on the other end of a weapon.

MacGnG 06-22-2003 08:38 PM

innocent until proven guilty.... then release him to the mob

dimbulb 06-23-2003 05:45 AM

you forget that he is innocent until proven guilty.

Thats one other thing i have problems with. The fact that accused rapists have their names published in the press, even before the case is tried. Even if he is proven innocent, it will be hard for him to clear his name totally.

Sparhawk 06-23-2003 06:55 AM

There's a sad rush to judgement in this country that's pretty prevalent, and only made worse by cable news and things like court tv. It has a lot to do, I think, with our short attention span.

eyeseepeedude 06-23-2003 07:18 AM

what has to do with our short attention span? ;)

4thTimeLucky 06-23-2003 07:27 AM

IseePDud - LOL!

And as for the innocent until proven guilty I can but second all those who rightly pointed this out.

Charlatan 06-23-2003 07:52 AM

innocent until proven guilty...

Hell, the headlines in yesterday's paper were asking for people to help the police with their investigation... They have arrested the guy but are still looking for help in the investigation. Do they have enough to prosecute or not?

I know they are just trying to get more information to put him away (they reportedly have a DNA and fibre match at this point) but it still seems like a disconnect when you hear the police say, "We have him" and "We need more help in our investigation".

PatrickBateman 07-09-2003 10:59 PM

The worst job on the planet is a scribe. You just spent your life copying the same thing over and over...

frankx 07-16-2003 09:25 AM

The only job I could think of worse than this is the person who is responsible for cleaning up the crime scene caused by this monster. I know the guy who does it here in New Orleans. It pays well, but goddamn, is it depressing.

oldtimer 07-16-2003 12:16 PM

Assembly line worker........explains itself.

ratbastid 07-16-2003 06:39 PM

Worst job in the world: assistant crack whore.

Seriously, cops do amazing work. The ones who actually operate from the principle To Protect and Serve are, IMO, some of the finest human beings alive. And sometimes the gory details of exactly HOW to protect and serve are... well, gory.

MilleniumZeus 07-16-2003 07:30 PM

When I read the thread, I thought you were going to tell me that the guy picking up the horse shit after a big parade or elephant loads during elephant circus acts would be the shittiest jobs.

crow_daw 07-17-2003 12:29 AM

Yeah, Bob nailed it, we gotta uphold the whole "guilty until proven innocent thing". Imagine if that was you, but you were totally innocent. The people don't really care if you did it or not, it'll still tarnish the hell out of your image. I'm not by any means saying this guys innocent, I'm just saying, ya gotta protect the possibility.

Bob Biter 07-20-2003 01:23 PM

Ah, that's "Innocent until proven guilty", crow_daw. :)

Drider_it 07-20-2003 04:55 PM

no the worse job on the planet come in twos..

1 . "do you want fries with that?"

2. "entering codes so i can launch the nukes"

splck 07-20-2003 05:47 PM

Sewage treatment would be a shitty job.

I'm with you and Bob. In fact, if I had decided to post in the "worst fears" thread, this exact thing would be on my list. (not that I have a single reason to expect it), but getting charged falsely or in error would be on my list of most feared things.

It would forever fuck your life - even if cleared of charges. Every second person you interact with forever would be second guessing about your innocence or guilt forever.

Edit: oh ya, and if this guy is found guilty, I can only wish the worst punishment available on him.

remiel 07-22-2003 01:09 PM

thing is, if I were a police officer I'd take pride in standing beside a man like this, protecting him from crowds and angry protesters, and then if he's found not guilty letting an innocent man go, and if he's found guilty of his crimes helping to lock the bastard away so deep he doesn't even hear rumours of the sun

sailor 07-22-2003 01:26 PM

Yeah, Ive always wondered about the lawyer that has to defend someone like that...

Does it really matter? I hate <b>people</b>! For their judgemental behavior. Tarnish your reputation? Pah! Fuck them. Anyone who knows you as closely as your family and friends do, know you are not capable of this crime, they, truely, are the only ones who matter. Sure people can change. It is never certain. But if I was ever falsely accused I'd simply legally change my name after the media heat died down. Then I'd still know my new identity would somehow be leaked to the press, in spite of that. God damn America. No privacy. I do despise the the courts for prosecuting the innocent and releasing the guilty. The lesson is simply don't do anything. Don't share your personal things with others you have barely met. I could go on but in short, you must <b>know</b> a person before you can trust them. What decides that? Time. The longer you have known the person the better you know what they are capable of. This kind of thinking only applies to the concept of innocent/guilty.
Fighting the system...the rest conform.
