oane 04-21-2003 05:01 AM

If you were given 20.000 dollars right now....

or Euros for that matter, and you had to spend it in say a couple of hours at most, what stuff would you buy?

Let's assume going to market etc is not a problem, and you could order online.

ME:
A Nikon prosumer camera.
19" LCD Monitor!:D
New graphics card.
An R6?!

What about you?

phunktastic 04-21-2003 05:04 AM

A nice new laptop and a decent car. I'd have about 17 grand left over.. I wonder how much those hybrid cars are

BoCo 04-21-2003 05:11 AM

Since it has to be spent right away:

I'd get a Sony LCD projection TV ($4,000), a Litespeed road bike (~$5,000), some new 17" wheels/tires for my car ($2,000), some new speakers for my livingroom ($3,000) and the rest would be spent in a mad rush through the mall.

frenik 04-21-2003 05:12 AM

I'd buy $20,000 in gold, and slowly sell it to pay for college. Technically, I spent it in a few hours, right? :D

If that's ruled cheating, then I'd buy a car, a computer or two, and use the rest to stock my freezer with a few month's worth of frozen pizzas.

Peetster 04-21-2003 05:31 AM

Put it all into the US Stock Market. It's poised to rally.

Bob Biter 04-21-2003 05:37 AM

I'd by a van, some traveler's cheques and go on the mother of all road trips.

troit 04-21-2003 05:38 AM

20 grand huh?

I hate to be so plain but I would use it to put toward the purchase of a house since that is a fairly good chunk of change and therefore requires longer to accumulate.

Ganguro 04-21-2003 05:45 AM

Good question.. If I couldnt give it away I would buy a new computer, a car, or be the clotheshorse I was born to be! Can we say fashion plate of questionable sexuality? Call me what you want.. but when im waking up to a bevy of Aligator skin suits
.. we all know who the real winner is :)

Empty_One 04-21-2003 05:53 AM

well, I'd have it spent pretty damn quick. A new HDTv with a plasma screen that I was looking at costs around 12,000, then a quick trip over to the computer store to pick up a new top of the line laptop and desktop, and I'll probably have to fish in my wallet to cover the difference.

sapiens 04-21-2003 06:05 AM

I'd pay off my student loans. (If I could do it in that short of time.). If it had to be totally frivolous, I would put it toward a new computer, a vacation on some tropical isle, or Subaru WRX.

bundy 04-21-2003 06:06 AM

$20,000 would immediately mean a motorbike. a cool motorbike.
oh, then i'd pay off my dirty credit card debt.

End User 04-21-2003 06:08 AM

I'd probably buy myself a nice lunch, then go over to paypal and donate the rest of it to Hal to ensure this awesome community never goes offline again!

CSflim 04-21-2003 06:47 AM

hmmmmm.... maybe....some rope. Yeah some rope. I reallly like rope. A nice long bit.

Somenosuke 04-21-2003 07:01 AM

What would happen if we DIDN'T spend it in a few hours? I'd probably horde it between my mattresses or in some super secret spot nobody could ever in a million years find (except me).

I'd probably move out, get a cheap apartment, and live off it for a little b..oh who am I kidding? That money would get used up on my schooling. :P

boatguy234 04-21-2003 07:06 AM

00

Cynthetiq 04-21-2003 07:17 AM

I'd be paying for all the renovations for the new apartment the wife and I just bought in the lower east side. :)

fienna 04-21-2003 07:36 AM

20,000 huh? i'd have to buy that car, or at least put a nice down payment on it... hey, those new 3 series BMW's are nice, and 20 grand could push the financing payments down to less then 100 a month, which would be sweet!

shalafi 04-21-2003 07:37 AM

ooohhh i could pay off my truck, finally get my bike running again, and probably a downpayment on the new bike i could afford if i didnt have my truck payments

yournamehere 04-21-2003 07:39 AM

Send it off the the mortgage company with the notation "Apply to principal only."

zf0enix 04-21-2003 07:41 AM

I'd use half of it as a down on a fixer-upper and the rest in the market to use as collateral to fix up the fixer-upper.

Or, hookers and beer and maybe a little weed.

zf0enix 04-21-2003 07:43 AM

While we're talking about being given money, my wife and I were just "gifted" about that much money. So this is a like a practice run for me!

degrawj 04-21-2003 08:45 AM

i would pay off my student loans, which are around 18,000 bucks. the rest i would spend on CD's, if i HAD to spend the money. i would rather save it though.

snowy 04-21-2003 08:48 AM

I'd prolly pay my parents back for money I've borrowed, and then spend the rest on a trip to Europe. :D If I had money left over, I'd save it for spending money for next school year. :)

Junchbailey 04-21-2003 08:55 AM

I'd pay off all my debts, which would leave me only about 3000 more to pay off.

Grondar 04-21-2003 09:01 AM

Given my current situation, I would certainly buy a car.

Assuming we had to spend it all and couldn't invest/save it, I would probably spend as much as I could on a car without topping $20,000.

sandeep 04-21-2003 09:07 AM

I'd get that ipod that i've been dying to get for a good year or so now.

Then i guess i'd lose myself in the closest HMV.
knowing me i'd probably spend too much and end up with a bigger credit card debt then i walked in with ;)

NoCure 04-21-2003 09:12 AM

Pay off College Loans, and get car fixed

onodrim 04-21-2003 09:18 AM

While there are dozens of things I would like to buy, I would put it in the bank and save it towards paying off college, no question. I guess thats what I get for deciding to go to a 30,000 a year school :p

zizdog69 04-21-2003 09:21 AM

Looks like a great wish list!!

I would definatly pay off my car and credit cards. I would have about $5000 left so I would get two awesome laptops, one for me and one for my woman (she has always wanted a laptop).

hotzot 04-21-2003 09:38 AM

pay of the bills

hotzot 04-21-2003 09:38 AM

pay off! the bills, my spelling SUX

ARTelevision 04-21-2003 09:40 AM

redo the home LAN, should be able to do it for that much.
Then put the old stuff to extra use, backup duty, etc.

SaltPork 04-21-2003 09:47 AM

A nice new computer and the rest I would put toward a car.

Daval 04-21-2003 09:49 AM

1. Pay back my parents for the loan I have with them - that frees up $250/month

2. Pay off both of my credit cards and then chop them up with scissors - frees up another $250/month

3. Pay off my barbecue financing - frees up $60/month

4. $7500 CDN for two vacations - one this year, one next.

5. Any leftover money goes into RRSP's

With the money that I am freeing up every month would go into savings and mutual funds.

sixate 04-21-2003 10:11 AM

Pay a few things off and save the rest.

Quadraton 04-21-2003 11:04 AM

I'd dive into the local Future Shop/Electronics Boutique, and pass out from all the excitement.

teflonian 04-21-2003 11:09 AM

pay off the car, buy a new computer with two LCD monitors, buy a couple hundred cds and books, buy my girlfriend some diamonds (even though I think they are the worst example of commercialism and consumerism).

Phaenx 04-21-2003 11:10 AM

20.000? Blockbuster, food, driving range.

20,000, investments. I don't know which ones.

arael 04-21-2003 11:13 AM

20,000 dollars... prob invest most of it and buy an I-pod for myself... nothing else i really want or need

phoenix1002 04-21-2003 11:25 AM

Hmm... probably would really spend it on college. But hey, since its not going to happen, I'd spend it on a slightly used car, a new computer, and plane tickets and supplies so I could backpack across Europe.

Car $10-15k approx
Computer $2k
New backpack, tent, food, tickets, etc... whatever's left over.

World's King 04-21-2003 11:35 AM

I'd buy a new bike. Maybe a GSX-R1000 or an YZF-R6. And a 17" PowerBook G4.

After that I would invest the rest in Cancer research.

cdwonderful 04-21-2003 11:39 AM

I would buy three airline tickets from ohio to california, one adult, two children. First class

Slims 04-21-2003 11:40 AM

I would get that rifle I want, pay off my credit card, and then get a Ducati with the money left over

Spungfoo 04-21-2003 12:23 PM

Pay off my student loans/credit card, invest the rest.

thenewguy 04-21-2003 12:26 PM

More of my house.

b1m2x3 04-21-2003 12:33 PM

stock in AVN, buy and sell real quick

jujueye 04-21-2003 12:38 PM

Those bloody Dolan's gave this virus to me....it goes like this:

-Pay off your debts (up to one half of money)
-Invest one third
-Play with one third so I dont feel ripped off. For 6K, I'd buy jewels for my sweetie, and put the rest to audio gear and a new computer for myself.

Dire Baka 04-21-2003 02:06 PM

Um... I would get a new laptop, a wacom intuos tablet, a new server for my room, a better sound system for both my tv and computer, and buy as much anime as I can :D

If that doesn't add up to 20000 then I would have to put a down payment on a acura NSX or some other nice car

ratbastid 04-21-2003 02:21 PM

Hookers and booze.

Kidding.

I'd probably plow it into the house. It's my only appreciating asset right now.

But if I didn't have a house or debts or responsibilities? Hookers and booze, all the way, baby! :D

SecretMethod70 04-21-2003 02:21 PM

Realistically: I'd put it 17k towards college - that's 17k less in loans I'll need (not even a year of school though :() and I'd put 3k in a Roth IRA (the yearly limit).

Greedily: I'd spend about 3-4k on computer stuff, getting an awesome, clear, plexiglass case with lights, etc.

I'd put the rest into other cool stuff like some nice furniture I'll be able to use for a long time to come and perhaps some home entertainment products.

K-Billy 04-21-2003 02:53 PM

computer - $2-3k
big plasma tv - $4-6k
surround sound system - $1-3k
invest/save - $6k
fool around with the rest of it

poochootrain 04-21-2003 02:55 PM

I would pay 1/5th of my law school debt.

ouch.

greytone 04-21-2003 03:15 PM

American, United, and Delta stock.......maybe it is a good thing I don't have 20K. Actually, that might be enough to look at getting some investment property.

Mango 04-21-2003 03:19 PM

That's about $30000 canadian. I'd put it on my mortgage. I really don't need anything right now so why not. It would enable me to retire mortage free in about 15 years.

bsce 04-21-2003 03:40 PM

pay for school... i'd still be short

meembo 04-21-2003 03:42 PM

car

A VW Passat coupe

I would get on this plane and never look back!

Locobot 04-21-2003 05:48 PM

a slight variation:
hookers and weed

CrazyBulgarian 04-21-2003 05:56 PM

Buy a Two Month Long Vacation

dimbulb 04-21-2003 06:02 PM

seriously: i'd put it all in a S&P500 index fund.
frivolously: a car for my gf, new set of rims and tires for my car, and i'll use the spare change to get myself a 21" LCD monitor. :D

forseti-6 04-21-2003 06:20 PM

$20k...

Martin D-42 Guitar
and the rest goes towards my down payment for my house :)

Macheath 04-21-2003 06:29 PM

Easy, a nice new computer and a new car. I don't have my own at the moment.

Sharing sucks.

Zello 04-21-2003 06:31 PM

Great thread oane!!

Besides of course the obvious, investing it.

First I would buy a really nice computer to replace my aging one.

I would buy a really nice projector for my computer. Then get a wireless keyboard / mouse. A nice surround sound system. To top it off a super comfy recliner.

Then after all that I would spend the rest on a nice car and take a road trip untill it was all gone.

brad 04-21-2003 07:11 PM

1 hr drive to foxwoods casino and one hell of a gambling party

Spidey 04-21-2003 07:27 PM

Pay off my student debt and probably take all my friends to a nice night out.

ranton 04-21-2003 07:44 PM

I'd do a "Ghost", and drop it in a collection box at the Women's Shelter. I did'nt earn it or try to win it, I would spend the rest of my life trying to figure out if I spent it wisely. Giving it away or "spending"$20k on food supplies or clothing would make feel like I accomplished something.

rs8001 04-21-2003 08:12 PM

I'd start looking at a houses.

And of course...I can't believe no one mentioned this yet...I'd donate a few bucks to TFP.

phredgreen 04-21-2003 09:37 PM

half of it would pay off my car. another quarter of it would clear my pressing debts. i'd prolly use the rest to buy out of my lease and look into renting a house.

and a nice 36 inch tv

and a decent sound system to compliment it

and a ps2 and xbox with enough games to justify owning them

and a two taco plate from filiberto's. :D

Sluggin 04-21-2003 09:54 PM

That would be divided nicely into two categories.. the first would be $17,000 toward the purchase of a nice Cadillac, some rims, tinting, and possibly bodywork. That wouldn't cover it all, but I'd have to save the other $3,000 for buying clothes and other things to emphasis how shallow I am. :D

i8one2 04-21-2003 10:02 PM

1/2 to start business, 1/2 to pay uncle sam's educational loan agreement.

krazykemist 04-21-2003 10:39 PM

Pay off the 6,000 I owe on my suv.
The rest would be spent on building a gameroom/LAN party room.
20'x20' with a 6'x4' enclosed bathroom. 2 Cat5 jacks on each wall. Router/hub built into wall. 3 corner desks. 3 regular desks. Entertainment center and bookcase.
Ive got the plans in AutoCAD if you wanna see :D
heh so I've thought about it once or twice.

Johnny Rotten 04-21-2003 11:21 PM

Couldn't track down and buy a decent, fuel-efficient used car in less than two hours...

Couldn't get myself my own apartment in less than two hours...

I guess I'd just pay off some nagging bills, buy a new computer, a couple consoles and a buncha games, a GBA (I was refused consoles as a child, never got my fill), donate to TFP and a few other organizations, buy a bunch of CDs to replace all the MP3s I've "found" on the Internet (cough, cough), buy a bunch of DVDs of the movies I love, get some new clothes, get a brick of kind bud and procure *three* high-class call girls for the next twelve hours in the penthouse suite at the top of the St. Francis muthafuckin Hotel.

TheDave87 04-22-2003 04:11 AM

Id buy a $20,000 hat.

Or a $19,999 hat and a coke.

alpha phi 04-22-2003 04:36 AM

I'd use it all to pay down the house.
The sooner I get this this thing payed off the sooner I can retire, and become a house husband!

scooter 04-22-2003 04:47 AM

whats up

I would definately buy another street bike, then I would buy a flock of penguins i think, just to say I have penguins, I always wanted a flock of penguins!!!!

tommyboy 04-22-2003 05:29 AM

payoff my truck and car.....boring but it would save me 600 bucks a month to buy more stuff!

Liquor Dealer 04-24-2003 06:11 PM

I'd go pay the interest on one of my notes at the bank.

JohneySupernuts 04-24-2003 07:30 PM

I'd pay off all my debts, and then sepend the rest on my hobbies. (such as playing against others with airsoft weapons)

if they wouldn't let me pay off the bill colloectors I would make -damn- sure they did, even if that involved a bottle of jack daneals, 9mm and a shovel.

Nad Adam 04-25-2003 12:16 AM

A sleeping bag and a light tent, I'd go hitch-hiking through europe this summer.

strife 04-25-2003 12:36 AM

Just to stick with the rules, and assume that "investing/saving" in one form or another would be cheating, here's what I'd do.

Pay off my debt:

School: 15,000
Credit Card: 1,000
Other Credit Card: 3,000

Hmm....I'd buy a used motorcycle for 700 bucks somewhere, and then 6 months worth of insurance...

...or...

An xbox, with some games, and some ps2 games, and some gamecube games.

Oh! And buy a bunch of magazine subscriptions....I spend to much on the newsstand price.
