Its *almost* too bad Dave will be back from China by then, since thats where they will be the best. We love to watch these every year and fortunately peak nite is a friday nite this year so we can camp out in the yard and snuggle and watch!!!

one of my first dates with Skogafoss was to see the Leonids, didn't see them. I think the next time was the Geminids... damn maybe the Persids don't remember for sure, but it was still very exciting! We drove all the way out to Long Island observatory in North Fork and stood in an open field.

Ahh, thanks for the reminder, Shani. I'll make sure my kids see this, too; they were awed by the last meteor shower we watched.
Being somewhat of an amateur astronomer since I was a little kid (which was shortly after the big bang) I've known about all the regular showers that occur. So luckily I've seen these showers from various locations around the world ...wherever I am when they happen I make sure to find a darkish location to watch. I usually take binoculars but naked eye viewing is usually best ...full naked hot tub viewing is also pretty nice. The Perseids are comfy and convenient in the N.E. U.S. since they occur in August when it's warm around here so you can sprawl on a nice dark beach and watch. |
