Another "100 Grand" Question

What type of business would you start, if you only had a 100 grand to do so ? (if i use your idea, i'll buy you a beer) ...

Willravel 11-25-2007 09:18 PM

100k to start a business? It'd have to be an online business. I'd go spend $100k on crap at local garage sales and then sell it for $1m on ebay. Then I'd start a company selling stylish kevlar clothing. Jeans, blazers, shoes. Stuff that fits, and protects you from bullets.

dlish 11-26-2007 04:19 AM

need a partner will?

kurty[B] 11-26-2007 07:45 AM

I would open a small diner (no more than 10-15 seats).

Or will's idea.

highthief 11-26-2007 09:09 AM

I agree that 100K spent on building an online business has greater potential than 100K spent on a storefront business.

Elegia 11-26-2007 10:57 AM

I'd probably create a web based game that offers premium accounts for those willing to pay a bit.

Ustwo 11-26-2007 11:08 AM

That 100k can help get you a loan for more if you have a good idea.

Just don't do one of those boutique type stores which have 'will close soon' written all over it.

Based on the fact you must not have an idea, good or otherwise, or you wouldn't be posting here, I'd invest it in something secure and get back to work.

Willravel 11-26-2007 11:16 AM

Ustwo, I think the idea is that you've already decided to start a company.

More ideas:
- Start a religion (VERY profitable)
- Build a new hybrid prototype, to which I've already got designs I've been working on, and sell it to Toyota or Ford.
- Start an indy movie studio for war/political documentarians, which are really popular right now.
- Buy a timeshare in Spain.

Computer shop 100%. With my brother. Highfive!!!!!!!!!!

No questions asked return policy with a 15% restocking fee for opened products. No hassle returns.

Wouldn't you need a lot more than 100 grand to make a workable prototype of something that you can actually sell? Cause that sounds very expensive. :)

Other than that, I like the idea.

Plan9 11-26-2007 11:44 AM

$100k doesn't seem like a helluva lotta capital. Need investors.

I might open a target range out here for all the repressed soccer moms.

...

Maybe I'd take all of these ideas I have floating around in my skull and propose various custom firearm designs and put them together with my own machine shop... products mostly designed to stop attackers wearing WillRavel's custom Kevlar clothing.

World's King 11-26-2007 11:54 AM

Buy $100,000 worth of drugs (doesn't really matter what).

Sell to dumbass drugs addicts for twice the price.

Repeat.

Well one of my less original ideas is a Subaru Robin motor attached to a ginormous alternator, hooked up to amps leading into a big dc motor. That would cost less than $10k. I could install that in to an existing car, so maybe add $7k for a reasonable used car. The rest can be spent on testing and then marketing. I could see it being done for $45k. My other ideas are a bit more expensive, but I don't see it going over $100k. I'm not building a GM Highline type of prototype or anything, which could easily push past a $1m budget.

This is the single most insightful, creative idea I have heard all day long.
Kudos Will!

One viable option is start a B2B job shop:
  • Lease several rapid prototyping machines. Hire them out at 800% markup on materials (instead of the customary 1000%), thus undercutting the next lowest bidder by 20%.
  • Lease a waterjet to cut sheet metal. Do short run projects. Sell own projects on side during downtime.
  • Purchase a laser cutter to cut sheet plastics and papers. Cut custom stencils or signs or wedding invitations, etc, at reasonable prices. Make money on the volume. Also use for side projects.

Plan9 11-26-2007 04:20 PM

Ooooh, I've always wanted to do metal sculpture.

I actually have access to all three through various connections, and as soon as I get my ducks in a row am going to start playing with them for profit  Laser cutting acrylic is a helluva lot better way to cut stencils for shirts than using an xacto knife, hehe.

Also, another really lucrative business model is to become a school photographer. Once you're in the door, if you manage it right in can literally pay a thousand dollars an hour.

Software costs shouldn't be more than $10,000, and another $10,000 for a laptop and desktop, and a final $10,000 is more than enough for a pair of camera bodies, a few lenses, tripods, and lights. That leaves you with $70,000 to hire a couple assistants and do some aggressive marketing campaigns. Sounds like win to me!

Plan9 11-26-2007 04:39 PM

Cool, but what does that have to do with metal sculpture?

casual user 11-26-2007 04:44 PM

i'd invest in real estate. buy one or a few multi-families and just collect rent and that'd be my full time job.

Thought you were referring to the waterjet. Doodles + scanner + waterjet + welder = sickass metal sculptures.

/not mine

Although, if youre more a freeform guy, a plasma cutter would work fine.

I work for a photography studio that does schools and I would NOT want that end of the business. It's way too labor intensive after the shoots with touch-ups, sizing and cropping, organizing by class and school, processing orders, etc., etc., all within a very tight timeframe. And one fuck-up, just one and you are in danger of losing the entire school because no one wants to have a pissed-off mom. You absorb any and all error costs as well. You should see this place when a mistake occurs-it's like bedlam.

StellaLuna 11-27-2007 01:35 PM

I've had this idea in my head for so long... a comfort food cafe. Small diner, open all night, serving great stuff like mashed potatoes and mac and cheese... but if you want scrambled eggs with grape jelly and it's not on the menu, just ask. If you want a ham sandwich with potato chips crunched in the middle, say something. Or if you're like me, and you crave a peanut butter sandwich with nacho cheese doritos on it, we could do it.
Now I'm hungry.

dlish 11-28-2007 12:38 AM

stella...

tell me when you open up.. im buying a plane ticket

as long as its not some cheesy truck stop for lonely truckies on some deserted highway..im getting hollywood streams galore.. oh god no!

Strange Famous 11-28-2007 02:03 PM

USD or GBP?

Makes a big difference.

newtx 11-28-2007 08:59 PM

I would start up the business of paying off my home mortgage. I am lucky that 100 grand would take care of it.

Amaras 11-29-2007 12:39 PM

Ouch!

World's King, when I was still using I guess I deserved the "dumbass"
tag.

As to my business idea;
-Nowadays, it seems that most folks can't fix anything in their house, as products knowledge has become incredibly specialized.

Setup a dial-a-fixit service, online, phone, classifieds.

Try to set it up as a 24/7 proposition, with premium charges for
late night, weekend services.

Start with seasoned pro's, as the most expensive service. Recruit
people fresh out of school, etc.... charge less. Set up a ratings
system to determine competency.

I know these types of services exist in different milieus, make it a
one stop shop.
What do you think?

Will do, darlin', just let me know if you're going to need anything crazy.
We're also going to have really dense mashed potatoes... not for eating, but for sculpting. Build something cool, we'll take a picture of it and hang it by the cash register. :)
