Guilty Pleasures...

Yeah, it's been done before, but it was 4 years ago and not like this...

What are some of your guilty pleasures? Feel free to talk about them conversationally, and not just leaving them in list form. :)

Specifically:

Movies (kinds of movies or specific titles)
TV shows
Music (artist or specific songs)
Habits/hobbies

Other!

I like romantic movies like Love Actually, The Notebook, What Dreams May Come...
I really like Grey's Anatomy.
Sometimes, I really want to hear some Avril Lavigne.
If I'm having a bad day, I like to drown it away in ice cream, or Ruffles chips and cheap French Onion dip. If I'm having a really great day due to some personal good news or success, I like to go buy cheap movies... just go to Target or somewhere and walk out with a few $5, $7.50, or $10 titles.

I love people-watching, if such a thing qualifies as guilt-inducing. lol

Jetée 10-30-2007 10:01 PM

I like to gain information, advice, knowledge, and insight by whatever means available to me.

I also have a tendency to be cryptic.

Menoman 10-30-2007 10:24 PM

I like going people watching with one of my buddies coz we always end up making fun of all the crazy weirdos =D

and checking out all the hot beatch's!

Sion 10-31-2007 02:41 AM

Ok, this may come as a shock to some of you, but my guilty pleasure is pot, porn, and pussy, in that order. First, I like to catch a nice buzz, then watch some porn to get really horny, then fuck like a madman for an hour, maybe hour and a half. Oh, and I'm partial to facials...both watching and giving.

I also have a collection of one-hit wonders, mostly from the 80s, that I break out from time to time:

The Knack - My Sharonna
Men Without Hats - Safety Dance
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen
Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe
Katrina & The Waves - Walking on Sunshine
etc

Hyacinthe 10-31-2007 05:13 AM

On a bad day:

Period romance in books (Georgette Heyer for example) and I dabble in romantic fanfiction, with movies I tend towards romantic comedys. In music I'll listen to something like the Pussycat Dolls (I don't need a man to be specific) or Pink (Stupid girls, U and Ur hand).

Chocolate is ofcourse a big one (only that dark stuff 70% cocoa for example where it's bitter and sweet all at once) or those tubs of icecream with the syrup mixed through.

abaya 10-31-2007 05:25 AM

Well, I don't feel particularly guilty about these, but okay:
* Getting off to XXX porn
* Reading vapid women's magazines (mostly for the sex), but only at the airport
* Eating ice cream, anywhere, anytime
* Playing in the snow like a kid
* Spending the whole day in bed with my husband

What I ACTUALLY feel guilty about (but not guilty enough to change):
* Not calling my mom often enough
* Not visiting extended family regularly (including grandma) when they live 10 mins away
* Not doing the dinner dishes until the next day (ktspktsp usually cooks)
* Surfing the internet instead of doing what I'm supposed to be doing
* Not going to the gym

... I suppose the guilty pleasure for the whole latter list would be "being selfish and/or lazy."

Ourcrazymodern? 10-31-2007 07:49 AM

I love confusion...
I love seeming clear when I'm not. I love dark chocolate.
I loved my wife.

All is wrong with this world. Treat it gently, it's just a baby.

We seem to think around the margins, but that profits noone.

...(There are no guilty pleasures unless you feel guilt)...don't do that!

BadNick 10-31-2007 10:00 AM

Sometimes I feel guilty about not feeling guilty about some things I think maybe I should feel guilty about. Environmental pollution and personal pollution are two areas I have in mind for this.

One of the things that I get a lot of pleasure from is driving my car as fast as I can on a roadcourse ...this is just for fun track time, not professional or even amateur or for prizes. Here I am, running high octane racegas, which has plenty of lead in it (not beyond me to realize it is outlawed for street use) spewing toxins all over the place and wasting precious resources and further promoting the downfall of our envirionment/world.

I also love good rich creamy ice cream and good chocolate.

fresnelly 10-31-2007 06:51 PM

Real Estate Reality Television

I don't care for most reality television shows as they tend to focus on three premises that I disagree with:

1) Vapid Celebrities are interesting!

Not.

2) Strained work relationships and environments are entertaining!

Why would I want to come home after a long day at work only to sit down watch another bunch of stressed out employees wrestle over workplace politics? I don't care how cool or how high profile your product is. (Yeah, I'm looking at you Boyd Coddington!)

3)Huge Reno projects rammed through with intentionally short schedules and low budgets are exciting!

I used to work in the Arts so I understand the fallout from low budgets and short schedules. Hint: It blows.

Real Estate shows can fall into these conventions, but because the properties take equal billing, the tone is generally lighter.

My favourite is a Canadian show called "Property Virgins" which follows the Agent/host around with a young couple as they scope out houses for their first buy. It's actually educational and fun rather than doom and gloom and the properties are usually in Toronto around my budget so I can relate. With two children and only two bedrooms and one bathroom, a larger house is in our future. We've learned a lot watching this one.

I could go on but perhaps that's a thread unto itself. Am I alone here?

ngdawg 10-31-2007 07:58 PM

Hmmm... I would guess a guilty pleasure is something you might have to justify doing to anyone that doesn't 'get it'?
I don't watch tv much and don't watch movies and my music isn't odd....
OK...I love NASCAR! I yell at the drivers, I feel bad when my drivers have a rough time and cheer when the ones I can't stand have it bad. I even love the commercials the drivers make that poke fun at the sport.
I like to drive fast, going through the gears to their high end and hearing the car get loud; sometimes the looks on faces as I pass by gets me to grinning-no one expects that noise and that speed from this little 4 cylinder. :D
Chocolate. 'Nuff said.
Going into a particularly odd site that most people say 'yuck' about and watching the videos-the porn ones are usually hysterical and there's some great dumbass ones as well.
Did I mention chocolate?
Bacon and eggs. I know I have to not have them, but diner bacon and eggs is almost as good as chocolate! And, more often than not, I'm regretting that decision within an hour, but day-um!! I love bacon and eggs!!

squeeeb 10-31-2007 08:34 PM

i secretly love watching "the view" and"ellen." my other guilty pleasure is the occasional spicy chicken crunch wrap supreme at taco bell. it's poison, yet, i like it. i don't consider porn or getting drunk a guilty pleasure, they are more of a way of life for me. i don't consider any music a guilty pleasure for anyone. if you like the music, then its for you to enjoy, no matter what it is.

Mith 11-01-2007 02:55 PM

I'm not guilty about any of my pleasures.

telekinetic 11-01-2007 03:57 PM

My guilty pleasure lately is laughing at A Shot at Love with Tila 'Tequilla' Nguyen. Such a terrible show.

Also, drinking premade Strawberry Margarita Mix, playing Pokemon video games, and covertly groping my wife at work (we work in the same office)

noodle 11-01-2007 04:07 PM

America's Next Top Model.
Michael Jackson's teen and early twenties music.
Smartfood Popcorn.
The dark chocolate Nugget variety pack.
Pistachio or rocky road frozen yogurt.
Spider Solitaire.
Stupid pop-culture novels tossed in between more classic or "serious" stuff. I love Jane Green.
Period films with romance. I loved Last of the Mohicans.
Cheesy love songs. Sometimes. But not the country ones.
Telling people off when they deserve it.

nothing else really makes me feel odd about doing/eating/saying whatever that something is.

World's King 11-01-2007 04:09 PM

I love Buffalo chicken wings.

If a restaurant has them on their menu I will order them. No matter what.

And the only reason it's a guilty pleasure is that my stomach can't handle them. I'm gonna get sick. No matter what.

But really, I like cheesy love songs.

MrTia 11-05-2007 09:50 PM

i worship at the altar of paul mccartney and wings. maybe it was just because they were big when i was just getting up on two feet. but i love em! i mean, it's really irregular product and i think that venus and mars crap is enough to make anyone want to cram ball bearings into their own ears to make it stop, but c'mon. juniors farm? live and let die? i even like a lot of their later product, like "with a little luck" -- fucking brilliant. but the real torchbearers are uncle albert/admiral halsey, basically the entire "band on the run" album, and maybe i'm amazed. shit's as good as the beatles, and if you disagree with me... well, i won't like it, is all. but then again, i get people disagreeing with me about this a lot so i've learned to deal. :D

i also like the gogos.

leetrice 11-07-2007 01:27 AM

rofl, my guilty pleasure is.....really....bad....and disturbing.....i sometimes find "hentai" interesting and watch some clips.....not sure if anyone does the same but yeah....cartoons to me feel more realistic sometimes.

My biggest guilty pleasure...

Looking at boobs. It is a pleasure and I like them all. I feel guilt because I'll take a peek at any opportunity, not just at my wife's.

xxxafterglow 11-07-2007 07:12 PM

Celebrity news. I hate it but I can't help checking perez and tmz... thankfully, their politics are starting to clash with my own so I'm aiming to wean myself off.

It's that darn cute Suri Cruise.

I also really love teen movies. Yeah, like Bring it On. And TFP is a guilty pleasure.

Playing World of Warcraft.

Reading the Naruto manga beyond what my SO has read.

Taking a longer shower than usual.

My guilty pleasures:

The Internet (no doubt I should be in bed with my husband right now)
Candy-almost anything
Solo Porn-I mean after all I should really just wait and have sex with my husband rather then masturbating alone
Cupcakes-I could eat several in one sitting
Laziness-Sometimes will sit in PJs all day
Crushes-I still have them on certain people even though I am married :) I also fantasize about them.

That is all I can think of now.....I am sure there are more

Jenna 11-07-2007 09:51 PM

Guity Pleasures

Dancing to "ghetto" music when I'm drunk
Porn, not TOO guilty about it, but somewhat
Livejournal
Dying my hair too much
Jenna Jameson... Too bad I practically loathe her now but none the less
Grilled Cheese... I'd eat it over steak ANY day

Fast Forward 11-08-2007 02:15 AM

More like a ”guilty displeasure”, really.

Back in the day, my best friend wanted me to go with him to see a ”skin flic”. I'd never seen one before and I don't think that he had either. Why he couldn't go alone I'll never know. Anyway, it was the renowned film ”Deep Throat” with Linda Lovelace and it was all the talk. It was showing at the hush-hush cinema for ages (by ”popular demand” they said) and it was probably nearly a year of my friend's badgering me before I finally agreed to see it with him.

Now, I don't know how everyone else experiences these things for the first time, but I was disgusted. I don't know why I was so turned off but I recon it was because I had more sex than I could handle those days - I was a university student back then, you see – and I suppose I couldn't see any sense in watching other people grapple and sweat on the sheets, on the kitchen sink, on the floor, in the doctor's office, and just about everywhere else thinkable. What's the point in fantazing about it? Hell, I was living that life for real.

OK. We can crank the clock forward several years. How many? Shit, I don't know. But eventually, I got around to seeing another one. It was also disgusting but not nearly as much as the first one. So I can say today that I've seen more than a dozen of them and these days my disgust is in myself for not finding them so distasteful anymore. A ”guilty pleasure”? Yeah, I guess so. :paranoid:

'80s rock, metal, and pop crap. Journey, Foreigner, The Police, all that stuff that any self-respecting metalhead should hate with a passion.

biznatch 11-08-2007 01:34 PM

Anita Ward - Ring My Bell
Also, sometimes, I'll watch I love New York. Maybe it's a "at least I'm smarter than those people" kind of pleasure.

I used to be a fan of Mandy Moore, before she really made it to solid B List (and when she was only selling records to Filipino catholics), used to talk to her on AIM, posted 10,000 times on her website (really), even bought two of her CD's and A Walk to Remember on DVD (which even today I want to type as AWTR)

I mean, she's a nice looking girl and all, but thats pretty embarassing in retrospect still.

Yeah all things 80's are my guilty pleasure.

SecretMethod70 01-15-2008 01:44 PM

Strange Famous: Mandy Moore isn't a "nice looking girl"...she's ridiculously cute.

Anyway, I really dislike emo music but there's this one song that was pretty popular over the last year that I almost liked. You see, I didn't like the program that was playing on NPR (Prairie Home Companion...ugh) and there was nothing else on the radio, so I was stuck listening to some random Top 40 station. The song came on and I immediately recognized it, but it was the first time I was forced to actually pay attention, and gosh darnit, I actually thought it was pretty enjoyable at first. Then the chorus came and I thought it sucked and ruined the song - but to this day I still assert that the beginning of the song before the chorus could have been a good song. Then I was listening to Sound Opinions and found out that the song was included on Jim DeRogatis' 2007 mix-tape, so I must not be alone in my enjoyment of at least part of the song. And if Jim DeRogatis has the courage to admit he finds it at least partially enjoyable, then I do too.

That song: Fall Out Boy - “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs”

Even the name is stupid! Worse yet, the video is a steaming pile of crap and to top it off the band is from a very wealthy Chicago neighborhood (median family income of $122,515), so they fit completely into the emo stereotype. But still, the beginning before the chorus showed real potential.

The things I feel guilty about I don't really enjoy. Maybe I'm missing the point.

Guilty... things like personal failure in my professional life and intimate relationships.

...

Ugh, I dunno... I should be able to come up with some relatively smart-ass comment for this and I'm shootin' blanks like a neutered Chihuahua.

My guilty pleasure is beating myself up inside because I'm not good enough.

Mmm, negativity.

I suppose I'm defining "guilty" in this case (and in this thread) as "something I wouldn't usually admit to a stranger." Perhaps "embarrassing pleasures" would be a better way to put it.

I don't know anyone who hasn't beaten themselves up inside for not being "good enough."

I've killed a lot of people. Some girls in the apartment uptown uh, some homeless people maybe 5 or 10 um an NYU girl I met in Central Park. I left her in a parking lot behind some donut shop. I killed Bethany, my old girlfriend, with a nail gun, and some man uh some old faggot with a dog last week. I killed another girl with a chainsaw, I had to, she almost got away and uh someone else there I can't remember maybe a model, but she's dead too. And Paul Allen. I killed Paul Allen with an axe in the face, his body is dissolving in a bathtub in Hell's Kitchen. I don't want to leave anything out here. I guess I've killed maybe 20 people, maybe 40. I have tapes of a lot of it, uh some of the girls have seen the tapes. I even, um... I ate some of their brains, and I tried to cook a little. Tonight I, uh, I just had to kill a LOT of people.

I've watched the movie and read the book so many times it just feels like remembering things I did. Like, I could pass a polygraph saying, "Yeah, so I was in my tighty whities and tennis shoes chasing the hooker with the chainsaw and I decided that the best way to get her was to simply drop it on her as she was running down the stairs. You should have seen it. It was beautiful."

I turn down the sound of the dumbed ol tv sos no one will know..

and yet I do not feel guilt.

Well, there was this time I stole the batteries out of the kids' toys for my own...ahem...toys. Does that count?

Guilty Pleasure meaning something that I enjoy, but would be embarrassed for others to know?

Well, I will listen to Garth Brooks if I hear his song on the radio. Although I will never deny liking any country music, there are a few songs I don't mind hearing.
I enjoy Agatha Christie mysteries even though they are for old ladies I guess.
As embarrassing and pointless as it is, I really enjoy watching the entertainment news. Brit watch is so entertaining to me for some odd reason.
I used to be a huge snoop. Then I found out some things I didn't want to. That kinda killed the pleasure in that.

I like pushing the shopping cart really fast in the parking lot -- or sometimes an empty aisle -- and hopping up on the back of the cart to coast as far as I can...

Guilt comes easily to me about many things. Music isn't one of them; I think my taste is eclectic enough that it's beyond feeling guilty or embarrassed by it. As for the rest...

> The Internet
> Kit Kats, Reese's peanut butter cups, peanut M&Ms and Snickers
> Mindlessly organizing and rearranging crap, especially bookshelves and kitchen cabinets, and especially in the middle of the night or when I'm pressed for time and should be doing something else
> Making lists
> Purging material posessions, except books and clothes that I probably hang onto for too long
> Paper towels
> Hot showers
> TP (I like my bum clean)
> Printed t-shirts used to be a big guilty pleasure of mine, until we moved into this house and ran out of room for them all
> Baskin Robbins Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream
> Fantasizing about a clean, well-organized and well-designed home
> Daydreaming in general
> Such television gems as Lost, Mystery Diagnosis, Man vs. Wild, Survivorman, Small Space, Big Style, The Wire, The L Word, and football (college preferred)
> Dairy products in general
> Funfetti® cupcakes
> Cookie dough and cake batter
> Being judgmental

And I hate Tom Brady's hair.

I do that, too!! Not in the parking lot, though, definitely down the aisle.

I also like to zig zag on the highway when there's no one around and the kids are in the car. They go nuts! :D

Teaching them to do hilarious, goofy stuff. My 13-year old can yell, "Huepa" (Spanish/Colombian for 'hey', but in a happy party sort of way) and other odd words out the window of the car.

Securing things with duct tape... even if they don't need it... just in case.

HAHAHA! Oh, shit... I forget you actually know me. :shy:

I had to think about this one.

There isn't a single pleasure I have I feel guilty over.

I'll save guilt for where I hurt someone.

What is it about military guys and zipties and 550 cord? Guy I was dating (ranger) had like tons of both.

Chocolate chips.

It pleases me that I am not the only person who secretly derives pleasure and giddiness from sugary, disposable pop music. I simply love that stuff.

Omigod, the stuff is like grunt / paratrooper crack. I want it ALL and I want to do stuff with it.

This, only I feel guilty only when I hurt someone accidentally. I guess I'm not enlightened enough to feel guilt when I do it on purpose.

WHAT?!

...

Firearms are my biggest guilty pleasure, of course. The fun ones? They're expensive toys that do nothing except poke holes in paper or cans.

levite 02-05-2008 03:59 PM

Not going to bother listing vices I actually feel no shame about like pot, porn, and wanking.

Actual guilty pleasures include:

Teen Chick Movies: 10 Things I Hate About You, Save The Last Dance, Mean Girls, Freaky Friday, Bring It On, Clueless, The Princess Diaries, What A Girl Wants, Never Been Kissed, Dirty Dancing, etc. And not just to perv on the jailbait, either. Sometimes I watch with kleenex, but not for the guy reason.

60s Pop: The Monkees. 'Nuff said. The first professional rock show I ever went to was the Monkees' 1987 20 year reunion tour. I shrieked like a little girl.

*takes deep breath, reassures himself of masculinity...*
