Bulletin...Scam

I just got this from a friend....thought I might pass it along, as I just verified it.
Quote:

90# on your telephone

I dialed '0' and asked the operator who confirmed that this was correct
so please pass it on . . . (I also checked out Snopes.com <http://snopes.com/> .this is true, and
also applies to cell phones!)

PASS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying
himself as an AT&T Service Technician (could also be Telus) who was
conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the
test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang
up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.

Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing
90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line,
which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone
number.

I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many
local jails/prisons .

DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.

The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information
with EVERYONE I KNOW.

After checking with Verizon they also said it was true,
so do not dial 90# for anyone !!!!!

PLEASE HIT THAT FORWARD BUTTON AND PASS THIS ON TO
EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!
Good to Know

Bet they get pissed when they run across someone like me that has long distance blocked on their landline lol

So you're saying that if were to try this on someone I could make free (Well, free for me anway) long distance calls? That's good to know...

That's not true. Snopes rates the entire story as merely Partly true, and specifically states that it only affects businesses with PBX lines (not Centrix). It does not affect home or cell phones.

anything that has "FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW" is automatically suspect in my book. so far, for me, 100% of the time, it's bull...

pass this on to everyone you know...

If anyone called me from AT&T I would hang up first thing anyhow, regardless of what they wanted.

uncle phil 10-05-2007 10:13 AM

if this were a problem of any magnitude, it would be all over the audio, video and print media...

The more exclamation points there are in the email, the more true it has to be.

Elphaba 10-05-2007 09:00 PM

^^^ This must be true!!!!!! :D

Redlemon 10-07-2007 05:30 AM

I must say, this is the first time I've read an urban legend email falsely claiming Snopes support. That's pretty impressive, and makes it easier to fall for.

Always doublecheck.
