Sibling rivalry

Questions for the masses about your arch rivals through life.

Do you have any sibling(s)?
Are you older, or younger?
How well do you get along?
Are they near, or far from where you currently live?
Do you speak with them very often? If so, is it on good terms?
Have you ever told them how much they mean to you, or do you prefer to show it through your actions?
Name one good thing you did for them growing up.

For me, I have one younger brother who's all the way on the other side of the continent. I get along great with him, and we have a lot in common (video games, computers, anime). I speak with him mostly on MSN at least a couple of times a week, since it's cheaper, but the occasional phone call is made from either end. I prefer to let my actions do the talking, rather than telling him outright how much he means to me. My good deed for him was to reserve Zelda: Windwaker because he was in the process of moving to the west coast. Otherwise, he would have to wait a long time before getting the Ocarina of Time bonus CD. I spent $16 on shipping, and told him not to pay me back, because it was his house warming gift.

BTW, here's a special question for those without a brother or sister. Did you ever wish you had a sibling growing up?

holtmate 04-20-2003 08:34 PM

I'm the oldest of three...I have a younger brother and sister. We all get along much better now that we don't live together anymore.

sngx1275 04-20-2003 08:39 PM

I'm 22, got an 18 year old sister. She's a sr in hs I'm a 5th year sr in college. We started getting along much better once I moved out of parents house (which was when I started college).

laughter 04-20-2003 08:39 PM

Family of four, I'm the oldest. It's a mixed blessing. I'm sure anyone else who's a first child can relate to that.

I'm sure people are generally aware of the roles that siblings are supposed to play in family pecking order. Anyone think they don't fit the order role?

Macheath 04-20-2003 08:41 PM

I'm on good terms with my younger sister, who's six years my junior and we still live in the same house. Life would just be so much harder if we couldn't get along and neither of us needs the aggravation nowdays.

The best we ever did for each other was to be who we were and to be there, I couldn't reduce it to a single act or example.

We would "fight" when we were younger and it would piss the folks off, but even then I think we both knew it was kind of a game.

Since getting a shared PC some weeks ago though, my sister has tried to pull rank on my formerly-Mac-using ass. She doesn't realize that I'm actually getting to know PCs at a very rapid rate.

phoenix1002 04-20-2003 08:48 PM

I have a younger sister, who's four years younger than I am. Of course, when we were younger, we had the usual "MOM!!! SHE'S LOOKING AT ME!!!" car rides. However, once we got a bit older, we started getting along pretty well. We're very close now (She's 16, I'm almost 20) and when I'm home, we talk quite a bit. I have told her occasionally how much she means to me, but usually I just show it through my actions. Or we both harass each other, but we know that it's all in good fun. Except when she steals my CDs... that's just not cool ;). One good thing I've done for her? Well, I got her to listen to good music, does that count?

phredgreen 04-20-2003 08:54 PM

i have one brother... four years younger. him and i have never gotten along... he has some developmental issues (adhd, tourette's, depression, slight ld) that i had a hard time accepting when i was younger, so i would antagonize him all the time over things. he and i were constantly at eachother's throats, and my mom was constantly frustrated with us but powerless to do much about it (single full-time working mother). things finally came to a head when he and i got into a massive confrontation and i had his ass hauled away for attacking me (he may be younger than i, but he's got six inches and a good hundred pounds on me). i was basically forced to leave home and i did so, but even now we still have tension between us. he's one of those kids who just never learn.. i'm afraid he'll always live at home and be dependent on others cuz he can't do a damn thing for himself. he means very little to me at this point in life... if something was to happen to our mother, i would turn him away, brother or not... he and i are just too far apart.

bundy 04-20-2003 09:00 PM

i have an older brother.
we get on really well, especially since he moved out.

World's King 04-20-2003 09:11 PM

I have an older sister. She's 25. She is one of my best friends. She lives with my mother and I.

Somenosuke 04-20-2003 09:18 PM

I am the youngest of 4. I have 3 brothers, two of them half. And then there's my twin, who is 6 minutes older. He acts like it's 6 years, though.. *slight eyeroll*

I get along with all of them just fine. We have our little arguments, the worst of mine being with my twin. People always ask if we have that "Weird twin bond" going.. We don't. We're just two kids who happened to be born on the same day to the same mom. :p

I still live at home, but the twin will be back in a few weeks for the summer, then it's back to an apartment to live with a friend next fall. My other two brothers live close, one in town, the other in a town 15 minutes away. My second oldest half brother has only lived here since I was in 10th grade. That's when I met him for the first time. I'd always known my older half brother, because he lived with us, so it was kind of weird finding out about another half brother out of the blue, then meeting him.

I talk to all of my brothers pretty much every day. They're always over, or they call. As for that whole showing them how much they mean to me thing.. Well, it's an unspoken kind of thing. Everyone just -knows-. Any beef we have is brought out into the open and dealt with, then things settle. I just wish I had the kind of relationship with my parents that I did with my brothers. Oh well, That's a different story. :)

I can't remember anything I did for my brothers growing up, though. :P I'm already senile. Hehe. Sometimes I wish I had sisters, though. :)

Grondar 04-20-2003 09:21 PM

I am an only child, but I think I treat my mom like a sister at times, in that I give her a hard time and argue with her, even though there is no reason to. Not huge arguments, but just stupid stuff brothers and sisters seem to argue over..

onodrim 04-20-2003 10:01 PM

I'm the youngest of three. I have a brother who's 7 years older than me, and a sister who's 5 years older. Because of the larger gap in ages, I always got along realy well with my siblings. Especially my brother, and we're still very close. Although they are both married and living on their own now, they're within a 10 minute drive, and I love that I can see them often. I can't remember ever telling them specifially how much they meant to me, but its not uncommon to say 'I love you' to each other before parting. I can't think of a specific thing I did for them growing up, but in about a week I"m helping my sister and her husband move. :)

snowy 04-20-2003 10:08 PM

I have a younger brother...he's 18, I'm 20, soon to be 21...and we get along most of the time. My fam lives about five hours from where I'm at, but we talk all the time. I talk to my bro usually about once a week. He's going to be the musical at his hs coming up, and I'm going up to see it. My brother knows that I love him. Last year he had a brain tumor removed in a four-hour surgery. That made me realize how much I do really love the little shit. And he loves me because I send him pornography. :) I'm a good sister. I used to beat up people who bullied my brother (he has a larger than average head). I once climbed over the bus seats to punch someone. I was feisty. I did plenty of bad things too though--I accidentally hit my brother in the head with a baseball bat and split the skin on his forehead all the way to the bone. But we had a fun childhood, and I'm looking forward to his development as an adult ;)

Re: Sibling rivalry

Do you have any sibling(s)?
Yes, old brother (25) and younger(20) sister, I'm 21 (soon 22).

Are you older, or younger?
younger then the bro, older then the sister. yes, I am the dredded middle child.

How well do you get along?
Now or then? Now, good. then well....there is a reason it's called Sibling rivalry.

Are they near, or far from where you currently live?
Brother is about 4 hours south and my sister is on the other side of the contenent.

Do you speak with them very often? If so, is it on good terms?
Another then or now, I almost never talk to them but it is on good terms. Probably the best ever. I had a interesting convo when I called my sister last week to wish her a happy birthday, she asked if I still played Baseball. I haven't for 10 years. She replyed she's been studying. Hit home.
My brother got kicked out of the house when I was younger and I didn't see him much. He grew up though and got back in the house, went to school soon after.

Have you ever told them how much they mean to you, or do you prefer to show it through your actions?
no and no.

Name one good thing you did for them growing up.

we have a weird relationship. Hard to explain, maybe cheerios can since she's seen it from the outside. I dont' know.

Atropos4 04-20-2003 10:45 PM

i'm 22

my stepbrother is either 26 or will be 26 ...we didn't get along when we were younger...now that we're grown we do...he's always able to make me laugh....one thing i remember most that he did to me when i was younger...he put ajax soap in my pop...i told my mom it tasted funny...i lost my pop privlages cuz i wouldn't drink it..when he told me later i of course ran inside to tattle....soapy pop is nasy (i was about 7 when that happened)

my sister is 21 she is technically my half sister but i've never really thought of her as half....we used to be soooo close ...but her b/f is an ass and she's not allowed to come over to my house
My little brother will be 19 in august...he's also a half sib.....him and i get along on and off....he usually just annoys me.with his immaturity...but then he can be really cool sometimes..he just got a good job and seems to be growing up a bit....
i could have other brothers/sisters but i don't know....i don't know who my real dad is ....i guess one day i'll find out

They're sibs... they... do siblingy stuff... it's kinda taken for granted that they're there for eachother. like that feuding family... they'll beat each other bloody, but if one needs something, the other's there to give it. I like em. :)

Lebell 04-20-2003 11:14 PM

No,

I'm an only adopted kid.

I've often wondered what it would be like to have siblings. But even my best friend was an only and I could send him home if we fought.

On the flip, I still have that friend, going on 32 years.

Hmmm, maybe I do have a brother. (sorta)

SecretMethod70 04-21-2003 12:15 AM

I have two older brothers - 9 and 11 years older. So there wasn't really much sibling rivalry at all between us. I remember the two of them arguing sometimes but I pretty much always got along with them. I guess the age distance was far enough apart that it was OK.

Phaenx 04-21-2003 12:33 AM

I am the youngest of 6. I've been punched, kicked, bludgeoned with various objects, spit on, pushed off a rather large and steep hill with sharp rocks on it that ultimately led into a pond, my brother used to stick my head under the couch cushions, had horse manure thrown on me, dropkicked from the top of a stack of hay, hit by a bail of hay (we made a hay castle that day), titty twisters, "whats this" "a brain sucker" "what's it doing?" "starving", hide and seek games that involve going out into the woods and everyone running away but you, I found a frog once and my brother pretended like he ran over it with the lawn mower, boogers on the pop can, face full of hose while you were walking to the bus stop.

That's the usual stuff. It wasn't even sibling rivaly, mom loved everyone, it was concentrated sadism and living on a farm that triggered this.

vermin 04-21-2003 01:08 AM

I have a brother who is 2 years older than me. He has been in the Navy since just after his senior year in high school. He lives in Washington, somewhere just outside Seattle. I think I've seen him 3 times since he joined up, once he came back to visit, once for our grandfather's funeral, and two years ago when our mom had heart surgery. We don't write, call, or e-mail. When he was here 2 years ago I think I talked to his wife and step-son more than to him. Can anyone say 'unresolved issues'?

sierra2774 04-21-2003 11:42 AM

I am an only child! So I was spoiled rotten and still am by my Dad...I would have loved to have a Brother or Sister though, I fell like I missed out not having that.

My sister I didnt kill.

The_Jazz 06-26-2006 10:58 AM

I have one brother who is 2 1/2 years younger than me. He lives in Signal Mt., TN in my grandmother's house now that she's in an assisted living facility. We haven't actually spoken in about 2 years when he threatened me and my wife over the phone for perceived slights. He then hung up and threatened my best friend and his wife and child. Recently there's been some easing of tensions with the birth of my son and Chris becoming an uncle for the first time. He sent a note apologizing for his behavior and we responded with a note of acceptance along with some pictures of Max. The ball's in his court if he wants to keep the lines of communication open, but I've made it very clear to him through my parents that he'll never spend a night under my roof although he's welcome to visit for the day.

I suppose that I could say that I didn't have him thrown in jail for assault, but those fights didn't happen until we both graduated from high school (I was a distance runner in college and he played 2 seasons of DI football in a major program as an offensive guard before getting kicked out of school - we're proportionally built to our sports). I made sure to include him in all the stuff that my friends and I did in elementary and middle school even though he was younger.

warrrreagl 06-26-2006 11:04 AM

I thought I answered this the first time it came around, but I don't see my response.

Do you have any sibling(s)? I am the baby of four. Oldest sister is 10 years older, next sister is 7 years older, older brother is 6 years older. They all grew up together in a pack and I was stuck out there by myself.
Are you older, or younger?
The baby
How well do you get along?
My brother and I shared a bedroom and we are the closest. The sisters are more distant.

Are they near, or far from where you currently live?
Brother is 2 hours away, one sister is 3 hours away, other sister is 4 hours away.

Do you speak with them very often? If so, is it on good terms?
We are all required by our parents to call each other on birthdays. Otherwise, only at an occasional Christmas or football game.

Have you ever told them how much they mean to you, or do you prefer to show it through your actions?
No

Name one good thing you did for them growing up.
Stayed out of their hair when they were teenagers.

flat5 06-26-2006 02:23 PM

I have a brother 2 1/2 years older than me.
We were never friends. Shared a small room.
We have not had any contact since 1967.

feelgood 06-26-2006 03:03 PM

Do you have any sibling(s)?
1 Sister, 1 Brother, 1 Step-sister (Father's side), 1 Step-brother (Father's side)

Are you older, or younger?
Oldest (Not the oldest on my mom's side though)

How well do you get along?
I get along with my brother and sister but with the steps, I absolutely fucking hate them.

Are they near, or far from where you currently live?
Both of the brothers are living in the same house as I am, my sister lives with my mom in Ohio and my step-sister moved out.

Do you speak with them very often? If so, is it on good terms?
Not often, but its alrite. I don't think I need to answer the question for my steps.

Have you ever told them how much they mean to you, or do you prefer to show it through your actions?
Hmm, the closest thing that comes to answering that question is taking my brother out to the local eatery and just chill out.

Name one good thing you did for them growing up.
I licked my brother's face once, does that count?

Gilda 06-26-2006 04:23 PM

Do you have any sibling(s)?

Four brothers and three sisters. I lost one sister to a drunk driver when we were 16.

Are you older, or younger?

Oldest.

How well do you get along?

Katie and I shared a very close relationship that I think is unique to identical twins.

My sister and I are very close. I was her guardian from the time she was 15 to her graduating, so it's been a kind of half sister/half parent type of relationship. I'm on good terms with my oldest brother, who visits occasionally and whom I talk to about once a week. I have no contact with any of the others because my parents won't permit it.

Are they near, or far from where you currently live?

Sissy lives with me, Boris is in college on the other side of the country, the rest are with my parents in the MidWest.

Do you speak with them very often? If so, is it on good terms?

I speak with Sissy every day, Boris about once a week. The others I haven't spoken to in five years.

Have you ever told them how much they mean to you, or do you prefer to show it through your actions?

I don't accept that this is an either or. I tell Sissy daily and I show her in how I treat her daily. Boris is too far away for me to do anything other than words, and no contact with the others precludes doing anything.

Name one good thing you did for them growing up.

I took Sissy away from my parents.

Gilda

Average_Joe 06-27-2006 05:07 AM

Do you have any sibling(s)?
I have 1 sister who is 2 years younger.

How well do you get along?
She has special needs, and I take care of her. I don't consider myself close to her because our lives are on different levels.

Are they near, or far from where you currently live?
She lives in an apartment attached to my house.

Do you speak with them very often? If so, is it on good terms?
Since she lives so close, I see and speak to her about everyday.

Have you ever told them how much they mean to you, or do you prefer to show it through your actions?
Since we are not close, I don't talk with my sister in that context. I guess I show it through my actions since I basically agreed to adjust my and my family's life to accomodate her due to her special situation. I don't really know if she understands my actions though.

Name one good thing you did for them growing up.
I spent time with her when nobody else her age would.

Pip 06-27-2006 01:10 PM

Do you have any sibling(s)? I have a brother.
Are you older, or younger? I'm older by 20 months.
How well do you get along? As long as he's not pimping me out to his weird friends we get along swimmingly! Except the little runt can't actually swim but I like him anyway. :icare: (Seriously, there is this girl who carries a huge monkey-wrench around just to accessorise that he tried to set me up with! WTF?)
Are they near, or far from where you currently live? We both still live at home with Mom and Dad.
Do you speak with them very often? If so, is it on good terms? Daily, and it's on good terms.
Have you ever told them how much they mean to you, or do you prefer to show it through your actions? I show it through my actions.
Name one good thing you did for them growing up. I tutored his sorry arse through high school math. Plus, I never killed him. Let's just say the second time he broke his collarbone they couldn't pin it on me. :suave:

Grasshopper Green 06-28-2006 03:37 PM

Do you have any sibling(s)? An older brother and a younger sister.

Are you older, or younger? I'm the middle child

How well do you get along? As kids, I fought with them both, although with my brother more. They got along much better as kids. As adults, we always got along well for the most part

Are they near, or far from where you currently live? My brother is deceased, my sister lives 12 hours away

Do you speak with them very often? If so, is it on good terms? My sister and I talk on the phone about once a week, and it's only rarely on something other than good terms

Have you ever told them how much they mean to you, or do you prefer to show it through your actions? I showed them more...we weren't a very communicative family and it's stuck with me as an adult

Name one good thing you did for them growing up My sister wanted to go to the prom the year after I graduated, so I set her up with a friend, convinced my then bf (now hubby) and roommates to all go even though we were all graduated, so that she would feel more comfortable. It was actually pretty fun. My brother...I would cram for Latin tests with him (we were in the same class) because he never did his homework.
