whats your...
not sure if this is the section to post this.
I am curious what ya'll have... what type of internet connection do you have?? also who is your provider and if your like them or are stuck with them cause they are the only game in town. |
I have DSL because there is only one cable company in town and they charge astronomical prices. DSL isn't quite as fast, but it's better than dial up.
|
who provides the dsl? At&t, Embarq, Verizon, etc..
Do you like the service/company? |
Qwest. They are reliable; we rarely have outages (unlike the cable company, Comcast, we had cable for a year prior to DSL and we had outages about once a week) I really don't have any problems with them, actually. I'm pretty satisfied :)
|
We have comcast cable. It's been fairly reliable and we're pleased with the decent rate for it.

cablevision - $45 a month, fast, i can count on one hand the # of times it's been out in the past few years..

Verizon FIOS - 15 Mbps down. I love it. We've had no problems with the service so far, but I can't really comment yet since we've only had this since December. No outages yet. I'm hopeful that this will continue to be a great thing.
We have had DSL through Cincinnati Bell which was cool. It wasn't as fast (3 Mbps down) but it certainly wasn't awful. We only had 2 outages in 3 years and both were because of construction issues in our area. The service wasn't bad either. I only had one problem with their service department, so I can't really complain much. We had Comcast Cable before that. It sucked. We never got the 8 Mbps like they advertise. Of course they say "up to", but NEVER seeing that means to me it never happens. On top of that we had outages at least twice a month. The service was awful. They rarely got a bill correct. I hate Comcast and I will do everything in my power to make sure I never have to deal with them again. |
Eileen, you know the difference between bytes and bits, yes?
|
I've got charter cable, 10240 Kbit/s down 1024 Kbit/s up. whats nicer is i get it consistently. it's usually reliable, except they are expanding there business to phones too, so they said to expect outages... :(

My service does not show up on your poll.
I use wireless broadband from Xanadoo. I am using this because I can use my service at my various unwired workplaces. The irony is that I get a much better connection at work than at home. At work I often get 700Kbps, whereas at home, it varies from 160Kbps to 500Kbps with occasional peaks. |
AT&T DSL 300k/s down, 45k/s up. I got a special for 12 months for $18/month. And I discovered a loophole that resets the 12 month period. We can keep that rate for another year or 2.
And the service is great. It's only disconneted 3 times since we got it. |
Comcast cable. i hate it i hate the company i hate the service and i hate everything else about it i may have forgotten to mention. But... its this or dialup. When it does work its nice. But its not very stable. the customer support consists of me calling being put on hold for a hour then them saying they will send someone out in a week then they tell me its something wrong with my computer... suddenly all three computers in the house have the same problem. call them back yell at them some more get them to send out someone else who dosnt know anything about anything. he gives us a new modem and it dosnt fix the problem then they test the line and find out its a problem outside of the house in the network. the same thing i told them in the first place. They say someone will be out to fix it. A week later it starts working again and i never hear anything about any of it. I call them up yell at them some more then get credit for the time the internet was down because i refuse to pay $45 for the month that it was only working a fraction of the time. I really hate comcast. wish i had a diffrent option here.
|
 I leech off WiFi in my area. I think it's DSL, provided by Cox, but other than that, I don't know the difference among the various connections.
|
Comcast cable.
Since I want the speed and it's the only cable game in town I have to go with them. I considered DSL but a couple years ago when I signed up I wasn't convinced DSL could compare with cable. my edit after reading about Comcast reliability issues above: in my case it's not bad at all, I don't have a percentage of down time number, but I find Comcast Internet very reliable. But I feel like Comcast has me over a barrel, taking advantage of customers in whatever way possible to make more money ...they are definitely a profitable business. I think consumers really need other options, no competition is bad for consumers. It blows my mind that I pay this ungodly monthly charge for TV and internet. If I didn't have a family I don't even know if I would own a TV. |
AT&T DSL - It was hell getting it set up because of a problem on AT&T's end and a problem with the wiring in the apartment. None of it was our fault.
We have good speed, comparable to cable (I forget the actual numbers) but the bf wouldn't deal with it if it was slower. And it's cheaper - also got some kind of deal for switching from cable to DSL. |
optusnet cable. It also runs the telephones in my house. There customer service is pretty crap, but there cable service is rock solid - 3 or 4 outages in the last 4 years, each of which were solved really quickly. 10M down, 256K up - would rather faster up speed but it is acceptable.
|
like most, i got Cable from a small company called Vianet. I've never had a problem that lasted more than 5min. they have INCREDIBLE customer service. 24/7/365 service. they never bothered me since i got the UNLIMITED cable so it's perfect.

I tried Comcast (only cable joint in town) for about 2 months and then it got to be too much. The service was down...a lot. The support was horrible both on the telephone and in person. So, I switched to DSL. It's a bit slower, but it's cheaper and more reliable |
i would venture a guess that a large majority of people in the us have dsl or cable. 56k just doesnt seem to get it done anymore
|
Comcast. Just short of an arm and a leg.
|
Also a Comcast cable sucker. It's like $50 a month, but I haven't had many technical problems with it (though when I did they were idiots) and it's my only option for broadband.
|
Charter cable...Loath it. If another cable company was available in this area we would switch in heartbeat. Their customer service is worthless.
Had problems with them actually sending our bills. When I called to complain I was only receiving a bill every two months they told me they'd take me off that list. O_O Yeah....What list is that? Screw your customers over list? |
We have Comcast. I've actually been really pleased with their customer service. We had a connection problem earlier in the year and the guy came out and fixed it, no problems. We've had them come out here three or so times since we've moved in for various things and they've been nothing but courteous and helpful, acknowledging the problem caused by Comcast, etc. I've had to deal with them a lot, having had to have cable installs done several times in the last few years.
While cable is certainly expensive, the service they provide to me is worth the money I pay. |
Something called ADSL here in Iceland...
|
|
I've got Verizon DSL, and for the most part, it's been pretty awesome. Just a couple of times calling for service in 2 years, and they've been pretty good. Both times the modem went bad, and had to be replaced. Cable in the area is way overpriced.
|
I have Wildblue Satellite. I live in a rural area, so it was my only choice other than dialup. When I first got it I was very pleased, it being so much faster, but I've been noticing more often there are prolonged outages (sometimes a day at a time). I'd switch to something else if I had a choice.

Here's a site to test your speed and show off your connection :D
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ I'm rated at: AT&T on special for $18/month (currant price is $25/month) Download Speed: 2571 kbps (321.4 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 422 kbps (52.8 KB/sec transfer rate) |
Qwest DSL. Costs the same as my parents Comcast cable, is only 40% as fast, and less reliable. But where I live it's Qwest or dialup, so until I move it is what it is.

Download Speed: 15598 kbps (1949.8 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 1857 kbps (232.1 KB/sec transfer rate) |
SBC DSL. I had comcast cable for a bit, and while it was a bit faster, the price was outrageous.

school internet rocks.
well at least the wireless part does |
The reason why I made this post is cause I work as a DSL tech but on the phones instead of out in the field and I wondered what others and how yall like the service. I have 3.0 down and 512 up. I had a local cable provider prior to going with DSL and I had issues with them. I had about 50 or so documented times/dates when the service would hiccup or go out, I continued to have issues with them.
My speakeasy result: Download Speed: 3022 kbps (377.8 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 441 kbps (55.1 KB/sec transfer rate) Quote:

Two weeks ago the Qwest DSL went down and I called them and talked to some guy in India. He repeated what I said and then repeated it back to me and said, "We will work on it." So then I knew never to call them again. I just hung up. The DSL started working again 2 hours later, but who knows how long it was down. If I ask for a day's credit on my bill, then they give it to me, but I forgot to ask him for it, since he didn't really speak English very well and I hung up.

Cable, I got it for an MMORPG that I loved, and never looked back. Even though the game I got if for no longer is open, I would never go back to dial-up.
|
Cox... it's what there is. They're pretty good though. When I was in Detroit it was Comcast... they were pretty good too...

Download Speed: 8157 kbps (1019.6 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 1282 kbps (160.3 KB/sec transfer rate) That's my result off my comcast line. I've had very good luck with them. I think it has to do with the fact that they provide basically all cable and internet service to the apartment complex that I'm in, so there's a major hub and resource allocation here. I've had only 1 or 2 significant down periods in the year I've been here and certainly not more than 5 minor outages. The company sucks balls, but the service I get has been just fine. When I did have a major outage, they took responsibility and gave me a credit on my bill. Maybe I was just lucky? |
LAN at work, none at home.
|
Time Warner Cable at home, I love it. Much faster than any DSL I've used and for the same price. Has went down once in the past year. My DSL used to go down once per week (no kidding).
5,000 kbps down 400 kbps up At work we have fiber going straight to our server room pretty much (I work at a police department). Depending on the server we're downloading from, we download up to 10 megabytes per second and faster if the server allows it. Yes, ten megaBYTES per second. I actually have withdrawal when I go home from work to "lousy" 5,000 kbps cable. |
I haven't been here for quite some time maybe 2 yrs, A lot has changed since then. So I wonder if you commented before if you have changed your mind since then, also would like any new comments.
