Shoutbox revived...

I've re-applied the shoutbox to the main page of the forums.. let's hope this new version along with the recent maintenance to the TFP can support it.

Yakk 02-22-2007 01:15 PM

The website doesn't seem to be slow, but the shoutbox is lagging...

JumpinJesus 08-03-2009 03:31 PM

I don't see it? Am I missing something!

Plan9 08-03-2009 03:36 PM

*gasp*

Jetée 08-03-2009 04:05 PM

hahaha.. of course the self-professed zombie-lover is among the first to reply.

Was the shoutbox revived as a better alternative to what has become a very long stagnant phase in chat?

Plan9 08-03-2009 04:16 PM

No, no... it's a dream come true.

SecretMethod70 08-03-2009 04:28 PM

Uh... there are dates on posts for a reason ;)

Meditrina 08-03-2009 04:28 PM

never mind.

Plan9 08-03-2009 04:36 PM

SONUVABITCH... a post before I joined.

I just... it was so close.

Hold on... I'm going to go make my own Shoutbox.

I'll be right back.

This whole thread is wracked with date discrepancies--an edited post dating back to 2004, by someone other than the post originator... and this thread not having but a single reply before it was bounced back up hard.

It was funny, though, looking back.

Plan9 08-03-2009 04:42 PM

Pfft...

SecretMethod70 08-03-2009 04:44 PM

The JHVH edit is a joke signature. JHVH is a shortened form of Jehovah, which is of course one name for god. The edit date is 4004 BC, which is in line with the date of creation according to young Earth creationists, and the edit reason is "time for a rest," cause, you know, god rested on the 7th day. Of course, you're not the first person to be confused by that sig, and I remember when the mods first saw it and wondered wtf was going on too. :)

As for the thread being bumped, I'm not sure why it was, you'd have to ask JJ.

Plan9 08-03-2009 04:46 PM

Educational.

And hilarious. The piss in my cornflakes is way tangy.

albania 08-03-2009 05:05 PM

I remember the shoutbox. I feel safe in the shoutbox.

ShaniFaye 08-03-2009 05:05 PM

Damn....someone got me all excited for nothing

Yeah, me too. :(

Meditrina 08-03-2009 05:15 PM

there are a few of us in the chatroom right now, if you want to chat :D

Cynthetiq 08-03-2009 06:28 PM

Damn and I kept loading it on different themes to see if I somehow was missing it, even though I didn't use it nor care about it.

Heh.

I was browsing the site the other day and it somehow popped into my head. I can't remember exactly it was done away with, but I definitely enjoyed it and miss it.

Can someone remind me why it was canned?

SecretMethod70 08-04-2009 12:30 AM

It was a huge drain on system resources and slowed down the database quite a bit, causing occasional page time outs and crashes even with only moderate load. It was also a redundant feature since people were simultaneously using IRC chat, so it really made no sense to put up with it slowing down the board so much.

ShaniFaye 08-04-2009 02:21 AM

Sorry guys, I've given up on the chat, it didnt matter when I signed in there was hardly anyone but mods "signed in" and no chatting, I guess no one keeps the hours I do lol

healer 08-04-2009 02:51 AM

Thanks, SMeth.

You know, I can't understand why chat - as a medium - is finding it so difficult to take off at TFP. With the Mibbit web client negating the need for a separate IRC program it should be a no-brainer.

Maybe I'll start a thread (if there isn't already one). Get the community's views on the matter.

noodle 08-04-2009 03:32 AM

You know, it kills me how JJ was able to dredge this back up...
I could almost hear the TFP wheels screeching to a halt as everyone scrambled to the main page to find the shoutbox.
We're awesome.

JumpinJesus 08-04-2009 04:07 AM

This wasn't on the new posts search? HOw did I find this! This is wierd. At least it explains why I didn't see the shoutbox.

Leto 08-04-2009 06:00 AM

i sometimes find old, but oddly relevant threads to resurrect by browsing what our guests are viewing. I think that they google a topic, and end up here.
