New shoutbox.
 

I've added the shoutbox to the main page of the forums. It is a way for users to leave messages and chat on the front page. It updates automatically, so you don't have to refresh the page.

I'm hoping that people will use it often, even to leave a running commentary on their day. The whole idea is to add a bit of personality and chaos to make things interesting. We obviously do not have a lot of room (or appreciation) for chaos in our discussion forums, but everyone has a little spontanious itch in them. I'd rather you scratch it on the TFP than on some other board :p

Ok so much for that. It was causing some crazy server lag. I'd really really love to be able to provide this service for people, but I guess the server can't handle it. May be time for an upgrade.

cool idea- and I really liked it- for the 30 secs i was on it- lag was bad though....hope it works someday....

Well I don't think the idea is that it is immediate as, for example, IRC. That would encompass updating too often than is practical.

That reminds me....TFP is going to get a late Christmas present soon. 'Twas fun while it lasted.

I've been gone for the last couple of weeks due to illness. What's happening?

TFP had a shoutbox for a few hours.

It surprises me that you had server issues. My board has the exact same shoutbox. While my usual traffic is maybe 20-50% of what TFP's is, I notice almost no server lag. We have something like 175,000 shouts logged so far.


My board is even on a shared server.

If you are interested in discussing any of the specifics, or ways to maybe sort out the issues, let me know and maybe I (or some of the techie admins from my board), can help. :)

I also, cannot seem to find the Homepage...perhaps I am just confused.

Just click where it says "Tilted Forum Project" at the top left. It's just the index at http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/index.php?.

Kinda what I thought....so I take it the Shoutbox was a shortlived experiment?

I did click TFP on the left....no go...I clicked the logo...no go...I went into FF, unlogged, no go..../me smacks Halx

It'd help if I could get there....can't get there, can't bookmark it...

The code that lets you link is part of the forum skin, so if you change skins you may well find that you can get a link to work.

If it makes you feel any better, ng, I'm having exactly the same thing happen. I get bumped forward to the main index pretty much no matter what.

No, we can't get to the home page, Carno. Wouldn't matter if the shoutbox was there or not, but that might be why it wasn't utilized in those few hours-can't use what you can't get to.

For what its worth, I can't get to the home page either :P

Am I the only one who thought the index was the home page?

You might not be the only one, Carno, but there is real home page with introduction to the site, latest posts, etc. and it's there that the shoutbox was installed.
I'm going to completely clear my histories and cookies, then try to get to the home page in FF as if I were a newbie...

There is another page out there. I've seen it once, maybe twice.

The stories are true. It exists. Only a serendipitous click can get you there.

Maybe there is a mysterious link for it somewhere. I've heard stories. People have died looking for it.

That page doesn't exist anymore. The index is the homepage.
