Its not a question of full service being bad, its why is it illegal to pump your own gas?

Was it a makework thing so that stations have to hire more people (NJ/Oregon, quite possible) or was it nanny state mentality (also possible) because you could get hurt?

i believe it's a nanny state thing from the time when cars were first becoming widespread in the 40s and 50s, it was thought it might be unsafe for people to handle gasoline. i'm just surprised theyve never been able to get rid of it. i think the wikipedia article says oregon even had a referendum in the 80s that failed.

i wouldn't like it just for the reasons ng wrote. having to wait for 'service', and another person handling your credit card. although automated fraud is still possible even when its just you scanning your own card, i think its less likely than some kid personally handling it. it's like at the airport, used to be to check in you had to wait in a huge line with everyone else to then deal with a human ticket agent to check you in. and there was even the skycap where you didnt have to wait in line but you had to tip the guy and if you didnt tip he would send your bags to alaska. now you just do self check in, or better yet check in online, there are no lines and you don't have to deal with other people screwing things up.

It's both. First, it was 'dangerous'. Now they're crying the attendants would be out of work.
This same go-round has been going on about the Garden State Parkway, a toll road. For years, it's been attempted to get rid of the tolls. Then they cry, 'but how will the toll collectors earn a living?' Uh...doing something else? We don't need tolls just to keep collectors on a payroll, anymore than we need attendants to pump our gas to keep them working.
Welcome to my world.....

Ok. Do you know what they are talking about banning?

They aren't talking about banning FAT. They are talking about banning the industrially processed candle-wax substitute known as trans fat from food.

Trans fats: Chemically processed candle-wax substitute that looks and tastes and cooks somewhat like lard.

Artificially produced Trans fat (almost the only source of trans fat) is a way to turn liquid unsaturated fats into solid-at-room-tempurature trans fats.

Saturated fat: Mostly solid at room tempurature. Exists in abundance in a number of plants and animals (examples: coconut fat, most of the fat in steaks)

Unsaturated fat: Mostly liquid at room tempurature. Exists in abundance in a number of plants and animals (example: cooking oil)

Why ban trans fats?

Trans fats are a taste-a-like substitue for saturated fats. Except they are far worse for you. They are used in industrial baking to make a few more pennies per unit sold.

You cannot tell if you are eating trans fats or saturated fats without chemically analyzing the food. Yet if you eat the same food with saturated fats, it will taste the same and be better for you.

Small amounts of trans fats do exist in natural foods -- and any sensible law will take this into account. The amount of trans fats in natural foods is very close to "trace amounts".
