Name the Planet

So....it seems we now have 13 planets....but come on, I mean we really need to do better than 2003 UB313 for a planets name. Help me come up with the perfect designation for our newest baby.

I say....Medusa

Pacifier 08-16-2006 04:20 AM

One Planet has to be called Rupert

Ample 08-16-2006 04:32 AM

Ummmm Amplous sounds like a good fit, named after a truly gunius of a man.

amonkie 08-16-2006 04:35 AM

What about Vulcan?

ShaniFaye 08-16-2006 04:46 AM

Krypton....I've always liked Krypton and I think it would fit with pop culture (as would Vulcan)

Bill O'Rights 08-16-2006 05:17 AM

I vote Hannigan! :D

What?

maleficent 08-16-2006 05:21 AM

Red... simply Red :D

Cynthetiq 08-16-2006 05:31 AM

I vote for It-which-shall-not-be-named.

ShaniFaye 08-16-2006 05:32 AM

how bout the Planet formerly known as.....

SSJTWIZTA 08-16-2006 05:41 AM

CrackYerOn-5...

ok i was just being stupid, how about we name it Ciari, the planet thats probably not.

guthmund 08-16-2006 05:44 AM

I think Vulcan is an excellent choice. It stays true to the Roman gods motif and it's pop-culture.

If, however, Vulcan isn't to your liking, might I suggest.

Discordia - Roman goddess of strife and disorder, which is what this plan would portend for the astronomical community at large.
OR
Fabulinus - minor Roman god of infants. I don't care to much what he's responsible for; I just like the name.

Or, in that same vein, perhaps something after Jeff, the Roman God of Biscuits

sapiens 08-16-2006 05:51 AM

When you're unsure of what to name someone or something, the answer is always "Bob".

Heck, even when you are sure, you're wrong- the answer is "Bob".

Heck, even when you're not naming anything, the answer is always "Bob".

Wasn't that a mediocre '80s pop band?

maleficent 08-16-2006 06:05 AM

they're actually still around -- and not poppish anymore.. i was hoping there's be someone old enough to get that reference.. but i still like Red... :D

Does that mean I'm now one of the old folk?

ShaniFaye 08-16-2006 06:41 AM

Evidently it means I am too lol

Cervantes 08-16-2006 06:55 AM

I think we should throw in something greek instead of roman.. Maybe Adonis?

Dane Bramage 08-16-2006 07:42 AM

ooh... how 'bout Pandora, just because ;)

newtx 08-16-2006 08:00 AM

Flux. Home planet of the flux capicator.

Dilbert1234567 08-16-2006 08:18 AM

omicron perci 8

:)

warrrreagl 08-16-2006 08:34 AM

Persephone (unless they all have to be Roman). You gotta admire anyone who would trade an eternity in hell just to eat a pomegranate. Plus it takes an eternity to get that stuff off your fingers afterward.

captobvious 08-16-2006 08:37 AM

12th Rock from the Sun

of course the name can change if they keep changing what they consider to be "planets"

Elphaba 08-16-2006 08:40 AM

Another vote for "Bob" It really is the only answer.

I thought they were calling it Xena. Must be tough on a planet to have a temporary name.

Willravel 08-16-2006 08:55 AM

Name them after Norse gods: Baldr, Bragi, Búri, Forseti, Heimdall, Hermóðr (my personal favorite), Höðr, Kvasir, Loki, Odin, Ríg, Thor, and Tyr. We all learned the all important Greek/Roman mythos from the heavens in school, maybe it's time to learn about different mythology from the cosmos. The names could be applied appropriately (Odin or Thor for the big planet, Loki for a small planet with a mischevious orbit....etc.).

Plaid13 08-16-2006 09:22 AM

i really think one should be named Bob everyone likes bob its a good friendly name

Zeraph 08-16-2006 09:28 AM

The logical choice would be Quirinus, the left out major god from the Roman pantheon we get some of the other planetary names from.

fresnelly 08-16-2006 09:43 AM

Given how cold and desolate it must be, surely Hoth is in the running!

Seriously though, I'm with Zeraph. I like Willravel's Norse god suggestion, but these planets are too small and obscure. Those names, assuming they haven't already been taken, should be reserved for the possiblity of an undiscovered solar system similar to ours.

kutulu 08-16-2006 09:47 AM

This is retarded. There are hundreds of Kupier Belt objects that are more planet-like than Pluto. Are we going to name all of them as well? Pluto wouldn't even be a planet if it was discovered recently.

That's a good point. Classifying these objects as new planets is far from a done deal. Right?

Crack 08-16-2006 09:59 AM

I shall name it "Planet Hollywood"

Maybe Dell and Microsoft can get together and buy the naming right, and call it Microdell or Dellosoft... because they are just they wacky.

maleficent 08-16-2006 10:04 AM

I think in honor of the crackster - it should be named MUGU

Although I prefer "Bob", I would also concede to the Poulan Weedeater Independence Planet.

Eweser 08-16-2006 10:22 AM

I like George....or Henry.....Bob's ok too though...

stevie667 08-16-2006 10:23 AM

Steven, no wait, Antidisestablishmentarianism IV, lets see the kids at school put that one into a rhyme.

Actually, I think it should be named Bacchus...after the Roman god of wine and intoxication. What better name than one associated with drunken revelry?

Necrosis 08-16-2006 04:18 PM

Urectum?

Especially if it has Klingons.

noodle 08-16-2006 05:06 PM

Goofy.

He was much cooler than Pluto.

Of course, before I even read the thread, I heard "Bob" in my head.

cookmo 08-16-2006 05:10 PM

We should name it Bob, I have a "toy" named Bob :suave:
