Jack the cat chases black bear up tree

A black bear picked the wrong yard for a jaunt, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree — twice. Jack, a 15-pound orange and white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, often chasing small animals, but his owners and neighbors say his latest escapade was surprising. "We used to joke, 'Jack's on duty,' never knowing he'd go after a bear," owner Donna Dickey told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday's editions. Neighbor Suzanne Giovanetti first spotted Jack's accomplishment after her husband saw a bear climb a tree on the edge of their northern New Jersey property on Sunday. Giovanetti thought Jack was simply looking up at the bear, but soon realized the much larger animal was afraid of the hissing cat. After about 15 minutes, the bear descended and tried to run away, but Jack chased it up another tree. Dickey, who feared for her cat, then called Jack home and the bear scurried back to the woods. "He doesn't want anybody in his yard," Dickey said. Bear sightings are not unusual in West Milford, which experts consider one of the state's most bear-populated areas. What has your pet done that stands out from just being cute and normal? My dog Barney(who's gone now) leaped off our deck a got a hawk in mid - air as it was trying to fly away. My wife yelled and he dropped it and it flew as fast as it could. |
I want that cat, I want that cat! If I had a cat like that, then Big Ben wouldn't scare me so much around here, I can tell ya. Damn bears everywhere.....
|
I was just gonna come post this story...
Either that's one badass kitty cat - -though the news stories can't quite say whether he ways 10 pounds or 15 pounds.... or one chicken shit bear... but -hey -it's a Jersey Cat - of course it's badass... :) Good kitty... And warrrrreagl... BigBen is smarter than the average bear... he's also nicer than the average bear... Keep him in beer and you've got a happy bear... :) http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/mnt/med...12_06_2006.jpg http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/mnt/med...12_06_2006.jpg |
He, he warrrreagl, good one. Do you think he's scared?
Sorry mal! Thanks for the pic's, nice touch. |
the "expression" on the bear's face is pricessless -he needs a thought bubble over his head going "eeek a cat" ... :)
wonder if the bear is aware that cats can climb trees... :) |
Heh.
Time for a new name: "Lucky Jack." |
So...if you're a bear...and your bear buddies caught wind of this...would you ever live it down? Will his "bearhood" be called into question? Will he ever be able to show his snout down at the corner honeytree again?

He's probably hidding under a rock somewhere, oh the shame!

Haha, Poor cats gunna get snapped up if a real bear shows up though. That cats got bigger balls than me though... I wouldnt chase a bear up a tree!
|
That bear makes Winnie-the-Pooh look menacing.
|
And this, friends, is why cats are the shit. :)
|
is it jsut me or does that cat have no tail? maybe thats why the bear was so freaked out :p
|
Good story. :)
My neighbor's dog treed herself chasing a raccoon. It was a huge Madronna tree with a slight tilt and I guess her momentum allowed her to make it up to the first Y in the trunk. She lost interest in the coon pretty quickly. She got herself back down before I could run and get my camera. :) |
Aha, PowerPuss to the rescue!
That's a great story! :D |

I have two red toy poodles that chase rabbits...does that count for something? Ha Ha!!
|
The dog that I used to have a couple of years ago knocked over a beer and drank it.
He then promptly walked into a glass sliding door that we used to let him outside through... Equally Heroic :D |
That is awesome. Cats are the best.
When I was a teen, my parents cat who was extremely fat - About 20 lbs, and clawless, was very territorial of her yard and never left the yard. The neighbors had an Irish Setter that came to investigate and was getting curious about our toy poodle who was outside at the time. The cat started literally growling and got herself between the two dogs. She swatted at the dogs face and the setter turned tail to trot home. She started to chase him and leaped to his back where she rode him to the property line where she dropped off and crouched hissing and growling. Whoda thunk a cat was territorial. I guess this story just goes to back up that theory. My cat just bites my ankles if hubby and I ever start arguing loudly. We don't argue often and when we do it upsets her guess. |

Raeanna reminded me of my last cat, "Golda." The unwanted "Siamese from Hell" knocked my newfies in line and she pretty much ruled the property. One day, the neighbors two labs climbed their fence and found their way into my garage to say hello. I watched Golda leap from the top of a ladder I was using and clung (ouch) to one of the dog's back. They both ran, yelping down the street, even after that bitch cat let go. She also broke up dog fights when it suited her. Did I mention she was my *last* cat, emphasis on never again? |
This is great! I'm not a cat person, but this reminds me of my grand parents cat. My aunt who was living with them at the time was dating a cop who was a k-9 officer, he brought big bad Rin Tin Tin over only to have him clawed and chased by "momma kitty"....
