Throwing a 21st Birthday Party

So, I'm throwing a 21st birthday party for my girlfriend. Only thing is, I have no idea what to do. Should I put a theme to it?

I have a clubhouse in my apartment area that we could have it at.

She mentioned something about a Black and White Party ( dressed not the video game ;))

Just wanted to see if you guys had any ideas.

get lots and lots of booze and booze-like substances. The rest will take care of itself.

Yea, we've already had a lot of those parties. She just wants this to be memorable.

Keep 'em coming!

what's your budget for the party?
were you planning on serving food? Something a little more impressive than chips and dip?

theme parties I've always thought were a little silly... I don't have the patience or creativity to put together a costume... but black and white parties are generally pretty easy..

Back when i was in college, one of our frats used to have a black and white party every year... to gain admission you had to wear black and white (and didn't have to be dressy) Cocktails served were black and white russians... kinda fun...

If you want to go with a theme - I'd go with the year that she was born... 1985? (good lord I'm old...) play music from that era... have people come as their favorite movie character from that year...

http://movies.yahoo.com/browse/year/1985
lists the movies from '85 - back to the future was from that year... perhaps that could be a theme...

The year of your girlfriend's birth was the year the hit movie back to the future was released... so therefore -- pick where in the past you're going back to (even if you pick somewhere in your girlfriend's past...)

Dude, you don't have parties the night of some one's 21st.
You go to the bars. Do you not realize how many free drinks she will get, from the bar and people buying.

Anyway, cocktail parties are usually cool and bring in more women.

Yep. Go to the bars! Get a huge gang of people and go! Make sure you have designated drivers or taxi money to get home, though. What you could do is have everyone over for dinner (5pm) and then at 7pm all set out for the bars and barhop like crazy. Everyone has to buy 1 drink for birthday girl, and ALWAYS ask the bar what they give newly 21-year-olds.

Yep go to the bar, just say no to parties. Go bar hopping if you live in a state where that is feasible. Also theme parties are lame.

I would recommend the bar as well. Just advise her not to drink too many shots in a short amount of time, unless she's been drinking for awhile and has built up a tolerance. My ex-boyfriend and I went bar hopping for my 21st birthday. We started out around 8pm, and I was back home around 10, drunk off my ass, and had already puked in a Friday's bathroom. Needless to say, I didn't have a tolerance, and I didn't have nearly as good of a time as I would have if I had been able to stay up longer and party. If I could change that evening, I probably would, just so I could have a better time.

Save the theme party for another birthday, or for just-because. Oh, and invite us to the party when you have it. Sounds like fun. My final piece of advice, if this isn't a surprise party, tell her our thoughts and experiences, and let her make the decision. That way, she can't get mad. As with all things in relationships, communication is key. Good luck, and let us know what you guys decide. =)

Milestone celebrations (save birthday parties) are overrated and overthought.

Get some people together, go to a bar, do what people do in bars. Making things "memorable" doesn't happen. Things make themselves memorable.
