Cosplay events

Cosplay...or for those that adhere to new two-combo'd Japanese terms, costume roleplay. (I had to look this up, since my original thought in mind was incorrect)

"Cosplay participants ("cosplayers") form a subculture centered around wearing their costumes and reenacting scenes or inventing likely behavior inspired by their chosen sources. In some circles, the term cosplay has been broadened to include simply wearing a costume, without special consideration given to enacting characters in a performance context."

So for those intrigued, share some of the better or more hilarious portrayals you have found randomly.

Now, I haven't watched more than two episodes of the anime from which this idea stemmed (and I'd probably get the title of it wrong without looking it up), but this girl "Rei" looks like a good-enough real-life doppelgänger for the Japanese cartoon character.

Well, it took awhile, but after sifting through an inordinate amount of hentai and PVC figurines, I found an illustration; she is supposed to be comparable to this character, I guess.

It's a big thing in the Anime world. I know people who spend months working on costumes for conventions. They work in groups sometimes to do whole character sets from shows. They have props and everything.

I once got convinced to cosplay because my ex wanted me to match her... she was really hot.

Some of the costumes people make are fucking crazy. I saw three girls who cosplayed some anime and made huge boxes that looked like the boxes for action figures. When they stood in them it looked like life-sized dolls.

cellophanedeity 07-31-2009 06:54 PM

Honestly, I'm surrounded by lovely nerd people that cosplay for cons all the time. My brother's ladyfriend has gone every year since she was in middle school.

I'm seriously considering going as "White" from Tekkon Kinkreet.

That's a really interesting idea. But then again, outside of the conference and media event, it is just a group of fanatics walking around in boxes.

Speaking of life-sized dolls, I just found this five minutes ago:

It's an interesting way of playing, but I wonder if it might encourage people to cross the border between fandom and fanaticism.

Then again, they can be quite fun to look at, therefore this thread needs more pics.

Wow, Will, you are making me feel as though I need to do more research. I didn't know any of the characters you posted, and I barely knew of the ones I, myself, posted. I just see the similarities, and go from there.

But, you reminded me why I originally opened up this compendium: For the reason and next best excuse to feature Wonder Woman, portrayed by Olivia Munn.

I think this was from ComicCon this past week(end):

Actually, I'm not really much of an anime fan considering I live in the SF Bay area. I know next to nothing compared to most people I know.

Code Geass is arguably the best anime series in the last few years and is available online in it's entirety (2 seasons) here.

Ghost in the Shell is my personal favorite series (and two great films, of course). I'm not sure if it's available streaming online, but I suspect it is somewhere.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is widely considered to be the most successful anime series of all time, though the last few episodes are really quite confusing. The series is also online, here.

Army men

''... For many American boys, playing with army men and exploding them with fireworks is like a rite of passage. This cultural phenomenon was represented in Army Men, a popular series of computer games introduced by 3DO in the 1990s. Green army men that came to life like the other toys in the movie were also among the characters in the 1995 Disney movie, Toy Story. Gummy army men candy are also available.

Because these toys are readily available and affordable, they encourage a variety of creative types of play. As such, they can be set up in many different ways. They are especially well suited for the sandbox, or simple wargames with rubber balls or marbles, which can be rolled or thrown at army men.

Similar events in the threshold of Christmas are in many other parts of the world and also known as Naughty Santas, Cheapsuit Santas, Santarchy, Santa Rampage, the Red Menace and Santapalooza. For example, on Friday the Polish city, Shimbak held convention of local "Santa Clauses".

The main components of festivals of Santa Claus - the spontaneity, the atmosphere of freedom and creativity, improvisation and interaction between strangers jolly pastime.

moving on, I found out about 10 minutes ago that deviantart has a cosplay section (I don't know if I'll ever know how to get there manually, though... I find the mainsite to be too specific in terms of available filter points, so I get lost easily).

This is 'Tess', and she has dedicated this particular costume to a character from Final Fantasy VI.

It looks very nice, is what I'm thinking. Again, not sure of who she based the costume on or the personality attached to it, but it looks as though it was made with great effort, and as a result, it wowed me as a fanastic-looking finished product. If anyone is interest in any more cosplay portrayals by this particular young lady, I took a quick persual of her profile, and she has dozens of instances of separate cosplay(...ing?). Go ahead and take a peek for more.

Kamen Rider cosplay

I know it may not be big here, but this TV/manga/cultural impact franchise is just as big, if not bigger, than both the original runs of Power Rangers in the states,
as well as where it originally spawned--Japan. It is huge.

The progession of Kamen Riders over the span of 20+ years.

RedLemon, do you happen to know of the source above (ie location, convention, photographer?)

I only ask because it is a fact in mythos lore that neither a vampire nor a werewolf can be converted into the other undead genre, zombies.

So, visual evidence that contradicts (or, perhaps, enhances claims, of alternate universes)

http://i49.tinypic.com/4lm4jr.jpg
Werewolf Belle (no surprise, considering her husband)
Snow White Vampire (so that's where she got her pale complexion)
Shaman Pocahontas (she reminds me of the girl from The Ring)
Princess Jasmine (not aversely-affected, it seems, but she does have slash marks)
Zombie Cinderella (the freaks come out at midnight)

Do you happen to know who or what character the person in question is portraying? It may be obvious to you, or a certain readership of others, but I do prefer something more than a lonely picture without any context.

I mean, I know I'm very in-depth with the amount of detail and authorship I provide with every single post I compile, not only in this thread, but in every thread, but it's only to further reinforce that (mostly) nothing on the internet is left unattributed, or anonymous.

But a simple 'this is a "Black Widow" portrayal', or 'a "Donkey Kong" cosplay gathering in Hollywood last month' helps identify the who, why and where's of these unique events.

I go to anime cons and cosplay at them. I'm personally one of those mediocre girls, with a semi amateur costume, which I make myself. I'm not horrendous to look at in my cosplay or the hottest thing alive. The point is I've been to several, and, unfortunately, costumes like duct tape girl and the fat neko girl aren't that uncommon. However all of the conventions that I've been to have limited that sort of costume to after 10pm, when the 18+ events occur. Luckily there are always some amazing cosplayers running around as well.

I'd be more than appreciative, nay, overjoyed, even, if you could feature some of your costumes here, Mexra. It'd also be a great show to see the sorts of people you would co-mingle with at these conventions. Not that the people are any different, but what creativity, detail and aura they would employ into their costumed characters in preparation to attend a cosplay-con.

"Fallen Princesses"

Have you ever noticed that the cartoons of Walt Disney have virtually nothing in common with the true meaning of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen? Happy endings, much less marrying a handsome prince to the accompaniment of friendly forest-minded little animals are very rare. As a rule, none of these tales can include dealings of injury or permanent death. In her project: "Fallen Princess", Canadian photographer Dina Goldstein attempted to return the tales' brutality, moving bright Disney Princesses with you into our dimension. What would be the fate of all these beauties if they were subject to the commonest life of most ordinary women?

Carnival 2010 ; courtesy of 'The Big Picture'

Once more, it is Carnival Season in many countries around the world with a Roman Catholic heritage.
Celebrations and parades are put on just prior to the observance of Lent. Over the past few weeks,
parades and celebrations have taken place throughout Europe, the Caribbean and South America.
An estimated 730,000 foreign tourists, many fleeing snowy conditions in Europe and the United States,
traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for this year's celebrations. Collected here are a handful of images
from some of the elaborate celebrations of this spectacular annual Carnival season.
