I'm afraid that there are a lot of creationists in the US even now. The statement this woman made is clearly absurd and should probably lead to her being excused from her position, but she's representing the beliefs of many of her constituents. I take no issue with religion, people can believe in whatever god they want or don't want, but creationism is a cancer on science and it needs to be removed as quickly and effectively as possible. Creationism is not religion, it's the embodiment of ignorance.
