So what does that go under? Ambient?

I'm pretty open to all kinds of music, but I just don't get this.

The one with "ami yoshida (voice) and tamaru (bass)" is...what is that again? :confused:

ami yoshida is kinda hard to classify really--she's got astonishing vocal chops and works in that curious space between contemporary classical and experimental voice...there are alot of vocalists out there who do this sort of thing, but i don't know anyone who has her range/technique. youtube only has 2 clips of her, both seemingly from the same living-room performance. she has at least one cd out on improvised music from japan (the label) and that is pretty amazing.

the other 3 are phonography or field recordings. found sound in the last of the last 2, and a performance involving that curious metal tower in estonia.

none of this stuff has any particular place in commercial markets--personally, i dont care--it's interesting. for example--phonography pushed you toward wondering what exactly is the boundary that distinguishes music from noise--personally, i think that anything you record is music because recordings make sound repeatable--and that was the function of making scores back in the day. folk just haven't caught up with this yet--goes to show you that new technologies do not necessarily trigger any particular change in habits of thinking.

that said, there's no requirement that because anything you record is strictly speaking music (it has a structure, that structure is its duration) that you have to like it. i dont like bluegrass--but its still obviously music. i just dont like it. i like recordings of ants running around the surface of a contact mic--not only would most bluegrass heads i know not like it, they'd go further and claim it isn't music. that's where the fight would start.

the spurious landscape pieces are elements of a bigger project that'll eventually start appearing places. i like no. 5, but they'e both interesting, i think. everything you hear comes from a piano. there are some photos of the rig we built posted to the site as well.

What the hell dude?! Im impressed. Who built the big ear instrument, and who came up with the name for your group? Both are fab. If youre interested in hybrids you might Google Ken Butler. He used to live here in PDX. You might already know of him as he went big after moving to NYC. Perhaps not as avantgarde with sound, but the hybrids are creative and playable. Thanks for the treat.
