I still don't get it.

The back said "When you have Santa"

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,316580,00.html

Quote:

Suggestive pink Santa panties targeting young girls are being removed from Wal-Mart stores after parents objected to the offensive undergarments.

The panties, which were sold in the juniors department, seemed to suggest that girls don't need money, they just need a sugar daddy — in this case Santa Claus.

The hipster briefs — carrying the slogan "Who needs credit cards ..." on the front and "When you have Santa" on the derriere — caused an uproar among parents, who called for the $2.96 drawers to be pulled off the racks.

"We have directed our stores to remove this merchandise from our shelves," Linda Brown Blakely, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart, told FOXNews.com Wednesday.

The undergarments had caused a stir on some blogs prior to Wednesday's announcement. Scarlett, a reader of Feministing.com, alerted the blog to the holiday-inspired undies, which she found on a rack in the juniors department of a Wal-Mart in Cary, N.C.

Click here to read Feministing.com's post.

"There's nothing quite like telling adolescent girls that they don't need to worry about finances since they have their very own moneypot between their legs," Jessica Valenti, the executive editor of Feministing.com, wrote on the panty blog post.

Scarlett was so incensed by the message on the front of the panties, she didn't even see the Santa kicker in the rear, she wrote on the blog.

"I still think that the entire thing is messed up. This isn't just a cute T-shirt that says 'Just ask Santa,'" she wrote. "This is a pair of panties. Exactly how nice to Santa would the girl have to be in order to get stuff?"

dirtyrascal7 12-13-2007 11:11 AM

Oh thank goodness... I haven't had anything to complain about for nearly 3 days now. This finally gives me a reason to rant on and on and make myself feel all-important and powerful. I am just SHOCKED AND APPALLED!!! :oogle:

This made me snicker.

This, on the other hand, made me bust a gut.

Why raise such a damn fuss? I mean, if you don't like 'em...don't buy 'em. Now, as it is, by raising such a stink, the feminists have drawn attention to, and interest in, the same panties that got their own knickers in a knot. Had they left well enough alone, the unacceptable undies might well have just gone unnoticed, and collected dust on the shelves. Now, it's gonna be cool to own a pair. 'Cause Walmart was forced to pull 'em from the shelves. Dumb.

Shame the headline wasn't:

FEMINISTS MAKE WALLMART REMOVE YOUNG GIRLS' PANTIES

Jinn 12-13-2007 12:04 PM

I know it's cool to bash on feminists here, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and defend them.

"There's nothing quite like telling adolescent girls that they don't need to worry about finances since they have their very own moneypot between their legs," Jessica Valenti, the executive editor of Feministing.com, wrote on the panty blog post.

I couldn't agree more. Especially because Jessica is well-known and very reasonable, in my opinion. The larger a corporation gets, the more it has an ethical obligation to consider not only its bottom line but also what messages it is sending.

I'm glad they pulled it. It wasn't a good message. I'm not sure how you guys want to encourage MORE women to become gold-diggers. There's enough of them already, we don't need to spawn another generation obsessed with the guy's wallet.

For the record, I don't have any panties to bunch.

So, rather than the bottom line, Walmart should consider adolescent girls' bottoms?

To get serious, just for a moment, where does one draw the line? Jeans that prominantly display "whale tail"? Jogging pants with "Juicy" printed on the butt? Tank tops with any of a number of suggestive, if not downright lewd, sayings and illustrations on them?
Why just target panties?

Plan9 12-13-2007 01:22 PM

Yeah, they could be wearing burkas. Ooooo, burn!

Feminists: A group that should be fetching me a beer.

Jinn 12-13-2007 01:24 PM

I would like to believe that a socially conscious corporation wouldn't allow any of those things in a juniors section. But I'd also like to think that parents wouldn't allow their juniors to wear something like that.

Unfortunately, I know that we don't live in a Utopia and I know that both levels are failing. I'm not sure why any parent with mental capabilities beyond the ability to not shit oneself in public would allow their daughters to have "juicy" written on their asses.

But that's just me.

And Crompsin: For the record I am a feminist and no I will not fetch you a fucking beer.

Men can't be femenists. We can't comprehend the plight.

Jinn 12-13-2007 01:40 PM

Quote:

John Stoltenberg describes how he believes men can come to the struggle for women's equality in his book Refusing to be a Man:

"I'm thinking of those men whose feminist convictions spring from loyalty to a particular woman in their lives-a mother, a lover, a cherished friend-someone who has brought them to an intimate, almost insider's view of what life for women is like under male supremacy. These men have made a vow to stand beside her and not abandon her, to wholeheartedly be her ally. For such men, loyalty to a woman's life is experienced as a profound form of intimacy (not a threat to selfhood, as it might be for other men)."

Plan9 12-13-2007 01:50 PM

How do you feel about baking pies?

...

Panties / sweats with ass logos (external tramp stamp) are good targets on college girls with IQs equiv to a bunt cake... and still distasteful in every aspect.

As was heard in the campus coffee shop, from some guy to his wingman, just loud enough to be heard by the hot little feminist at the next table, whose pants he's trying to get into.

A feminist is one who believes in, supports, and/or works towards women's rights and liberties, among other things.

I happen to be one, too.

Willravel 12-13-2007 04:13 PM

For those who didn't think I was kidding: I was kidding. Jinn, calm down. Jumping down throats doesn't reflect well outside of Politics.

You must be thinking of a lobotomy. ;)

And, sir, I must respectfully decline, as it is unethical to perform them, especially on healthy brains.

LMAO... priceless.

And does anyone else think the site, "Feministing" is a combination of the words "feminist" and "fisting"?

Jetée 12-20-2007 05:10 PM

It is ALL implied... implications and reactions garnered.

Hmmm, I wish they had an equally trashy male equiv.

Every year... I feel cheated out of lame holiday undies.

Then there were the Abercrombie & Fitch thongs for for ages 7 to 14 with sexual phrases such as "eye candy" and "wink wink" printed on them...
http://money.cnn.com/2002/05/22/news...f_thong.01.jpg
jeeze... I have a 6 year old daughter.

Limited Two is selling padded underwire push-up bras to pre-pubescent kiddies.
http://img.slate.com/media/1/123125/...ASH_brasEX.jpg

They also offer a line of pink panties with rhinestones, hearts, and catchy sayings like "Buy it now! Tell Dad later!"
http://img.slate.com/media/1/123125/...H_undiesEX.jpg
I know they will eventually wear what they will... but there's (IMO) way too much sexualization of children in fashion, toys (Bratz) and advertising. People just seem to go along because everyone else is.

My opinions have really changed since we had our little girl. she'll probably grow to hate me.

Next on Montel, "Daddy won't let me get a clit ring"

The_Jazz 12-21-2007 06:45 AM

I have two conflicting thoughts on this. On the one hand, this shit is just FUNNY, especially the proposed headline, Daniel_.

On the other hand, who buys this shit for their prepubescent daughter? I'm all for the holiday underwear and all (I put Max in his Santa pajamas last night, for god's sake), but when did it become a parent's job to turn their kid into a sex object. Given what these things look like, I don't see any other choice but that term.

I don't even want to think about your post, Ottopilot. That stuff bothers me down to my core. Max loves to read catalogs, and there's one that has bath stuff for kids. The picture sets are disturbing. The boys are doing normal kid-stuff, and there are dinosaurs, trucks, planes, etc. on their towels and what not. The girls stuff features a girl that can't be older than 7 peeking out from behind a shower curtain with what I can only describe as a provocative look on her face. She's bare at the shoulder, and the implication is that she's naked behind the curtain. There are other little girls with hips thrust out like street walkers and all sorts of stuff that really bothers me.

When did Western Culture start to make sex objects of our little girls?
