one cubic shitload of spiders

I usually try to get spiders outside my home unharmed. But I think this calls for a flamethrower.

The 5 year old in me wants to pull all the legs off and watch them twich.

Do daddylonglegs even count as spiders?

CSflim 03-01-2007 02:39 PM

My sister is an arachnophobic. She would probably collapse onto the floor in a fit of hyperventilation if I were to show her this pic. If she ever saw it for real..... well that just doesn't bare thinking about!

Gilda 03-01-2007 03:01 PM

Oh. Oh wow. I really should have known better.

I may have difficulty sleeping tonight.

Mister Coaster 03-01-2007 04:22 PM

<= scared of spiders.

Thanks for the nightmares.

Dilbert1234567 03-01-2007 05:34 PM

dear god... RETREAT!

Sultana 03-01-2007 06:56 PM

I'd love to know the story behind this shot!

Industrial strength "Raid" should take care of them................................or old school them with "Real-Kill"

Astrocloud 03-01-2007 07:23 PM

I like daddy longlegs -they eat pests.

Lady Sage 03-02-2007 05:06 AM

Their mouths are too small to bite us, they take care of more vile insects like mosquitos and flies. Looks like a next of freshly hatched babies to me. They can stay with Auntie Sage for as long as they would like.

Hektore 03-02-2007 05:52 AM

So my roomate just had entymology, which went into arachnids a little bit. He informed me that these particular arachnids are particularly sensitive to mating pheremones released. More than likely that is going on here, but he also said there are a few plant/plant like things that grow and release chemicals similar to the mating pheremone. Makes sense evolutionarily, with these around there are less bugs that care about eating you, so if this is in a dark corner somewhere that could be moldy that could explain it as well.

So this is spider porn?

Says the insurance guy.

Where's your sense of adventure? :D

DEI37 03-02-2007 09:25 AM

I don't like spiders. I leave the daddy long legs alone, though. My wife likes 'em for the pest control. Consequently, I can tolerate 'em.

How do you think I know about this stuff? One of my accounts had this basic scenario happen, except the spiders were replaced with ants. And they used spray paint. And one of the guys responsible for the fire was a huffer. I only wrote the liability, so it wasn't that bad beyond a few smoke inhalation claims from tenants that didn't have the ant problem. One of my property cohorts was on it though, and it was something like a $15M claims I think.

And adventure?! I got your adventure right here! :icare:

Jinn 03-02-2007 11:17 AM

I think you've mis-spoken; it actually a cubic shit-ton (metric assload for the British).

I second the aerosol and lighter idea.

Mythbusters disproved that one. In one episode, Adam stuck his hand in a container of these spiders. After a while one eventually did bite him, for the most part they just seemed uninterested in biting.

Supple Cow 03-03-2007 09:55 PM

My skin is starting to itch... do you feel that? Is anybody else getting itchy?

*shudder*

analog 03-04-2007 01:16 AM

...this is a job for fire. Lots and lots of fire.

Charlatan 03-04-2007 01:21 AM

That's just not right.

That right up there with discovering a garter snake hibernaculum. Nothing like a writhing mass of snakes to give an 8-year-old a massive case of the willies (by the way, did you know that some hiberncula can contain up to 10,000 snakes... think about that for just a minute).

Ch'i 03-04-2007 03:06 AM

I think they're trying to tell us something.

Charlatan 03-04-2007 03:11 AM

Just thinking it would make a heck of a toupee!

A fellow I know was cutting down some trees and thought his chainsaw was spitting out that red oil they use. When the tree was down he found out he'd been running his chainsaw through a snake ball. I guess it was a horrible scene.

So that's where my chest hair crawled off to...

spindles 03-04-2007 02:49 PM

seems like a normal bunch of spiders to me. I used to not like them, but my back yard is packed with them - and there are some in the house. My 3yo has a huntsman that periodically lives in his room - something like this:

http://www.mdavid.com.au/spiders/ima...ntsman4big.jpg

They are basically harmless though look a bunch scarier than daddy long legs.

uncle phil 03-04-2007 03:36 PM

from a certain angle, they look pubic...

How big is that?

I've read Australia has some of the most deadly/venomous creatures in the world.

Here is America the spider that is most intimidating to me is the brown recluse, and it alone tops my list of reasons against moving to a southern state, and fittingly is also one of the prime benefits of living where I do. :)

Generally I don't mind spiders and insects. As I get older, I am minding them even less. I certainly don't enjoy torturing or killing them, and will take them outdoors or just leave them alone if at all possible.

shoulda added the link from whence the picture comes:
http://www.mdavid.com.au/spiders/huntsmanspiders.html

he says they grow to 6 inches - I've seen ones half that size - my son's one is probably on the bigger size of the ones I've seen.

Quote:

Big. Huntsmans are big spiders, growing up to 15 cm (6 inches) across if you include the legs. The big ones can also be very hairy and even someone comfortable with spiders can get a bit of a surprise when they encounter one. They are usually brown or grey. Some are banded.
Some people call these spiders tarantulas, but these spiders are in fact not tarantulas.
Yes, we do have a bunch of dangerous critters, but these really don't rate. Red back and funnel web spiders both a pretty bad. Funnel webs are supposedly quite common in Sydney and are also quite aggressive, so you do need to be pretty careful, but I've never actually seen one.

Off topic - Snakes? yep something like 7 out of the 10 most deadly snakes are Aussies, especially the spitting trouser snake :D (ok only the 7/10 bit is true...)

bobby 03-04-2007 07:42 PM

It's OK , they are natural.....xoxoxoo

Yep. I am all itchy now. Great timing, as I am heading to bed now. I knew I should not have looked at this thread. but it was tempting me.

I echo those sentiments...

I was driving last week and had my visor flipped down and turned to my left window.. I look over to the left lane and I noticed a spider hanging upsidedown on the edge of my visor-- mere inches from my face.. . My knee-jerk reaction caused me to nearly swerve into another vehicle. I then grabbed the nearest object (an almost empty cup of coffee in my cupholder) and tried to smash it into oblivion... The sad result was: I got coffee all over myself and the spider escaped... DAMN THOSE THINGS!!

Yeah, and you now know there's a spider hanging round your car, and you upset him.... and he might have a big brother.... or several big brothers...... yuck.
