Windows 2000 login help

Alright here's the story.

My dad has Windows 2000 pro and has locked himself out. It asked him to change his password, so he did, but must have fat-fingered it, so he doesn't know what it is. I thought I put a backdoor in, since I set it up, but apparently didn't. D'oh!!

Here's the question:

Is there a way to get in or crack the password?? I tried loading in safe-mode, but it still asked for a PW. Last known good won't work either since he succesfully logged in.

I've racked my brain, but can't think of any solutions. Of course I just got home from golfing, so I've had a couple of beers to help cloud my thinking.

I know I could load the Emergency Repair Disk, if I had made one. (Hindsight is 20/20 isn't it??)

The only thing I can think of is to re-load the OS.

Help if you can.

basicly you need the SAM file. It is located in the windows/config folder.
but the problem is: you can't get in. An old win98 start-up disk will do the trick. I'm sure you have one laying around or know someone who have it. (eventualy, install 98 on a old pc and make a boot-disk). This is in case you have formatted your win2k system as fat32. If it is NTFS, you better lay your hands on a copy of NTFSDos, and put it on 3.44 disk.
Now you're in. no protection, because 2k isn't loaded. Go and search now for the SAM file. The SAM file is the file where all the users/accounts and passwords are stored. Copy it on disk (do NOT delete it!). (you can do a google search if you want to know more about the SAM file, or just search for "win 2000 password crack" or something to find more info over this).
Now you have the sam file, but need to crack it. there are a lot sit-and-watch crackproggy's out there, so go and find yourself one. (for example, one of them is fol0phcrack). Try as many as you can, one will do the trick...

I know I have just explained how to crack a 2k system. don't know or it is within tfp-rules or not. Just don't try this at work...

The arm with the sword rose up as if newly stretched aloft, and round the figure blew the free winds of heaven.”

I do noty have the link handy but search google for linux NT password hack. you will find a downloadable bootdisk and that will have you in in about 2 mins, it works on any NT based system. Nice tool to have. As a side note if anyone is runing XP home and you lock yourself out this way, boot to safe mode and you can create a new user account with admn rights then login and fix your account, this does not work for PRO.

Thanks, I'm going to try this one and see how it works.

Don't worry though, I didn't get it from you, I know nothing about it, you didn't see me use it, no one can prove anything.

We did this at school when someone locked out the windows 2000 server domain controller....as soon as the tech found out they stole all our disks
