Searching for the perfect brew!

Firefly-question?

Ok, I've never seen it but netflix users rate the movies really high, so I thought I'd start with the tv series first.

Disc 1 shows Serenity, The Train Job and Bushwhacked

IMDB(internet movie data base) shows:

Season 1, Episode 1: The Train Job
Season 1, Episode 2: Bushwhacked

My question, is Serenity the piloit?

Well i'm not a fanboy of the series, but as a casual watcher of the show and I enjoy all of Joss Whedon's stuff, Serenity (not the movie) was the pilot.

The network fucked it up originally. The pilot, "Serenity" didn't show first! The first episode to play was supposed to be the second, "The Train Job", which showed September 20, 2002. The pilot, "Serenity", originally played December 20, 2002.

From the Wikipedia entry about the show:

Episodes (Intended Viewing Order)
1. "Serenity"
2. "The Train Job"
3. "Bushwhacked"
4. "Shindig"
5. "Safe"
6. "Our Mrs. Reynolds"
7. "Jaynestown"
8. "Out of Gas"
9. "Ariel"
10. "War Stories"
11. "Trash"
12. "The Message"
13. "Heart of Gold"
14. "Objects in Space"

The pilot should be a two hour episode, and then "The Train Job" is the second episode. You're doing the right thing by watching the series first and then the movie. While the movie is excellent on it's own, I think you'll enjoy it on a much broader sense having watched the series first. Just be ready to be really upset when you finish and realize that there isn't anymore!

the best episode (well, no, there are three best episodes) is "objects in the mirror" with the bounty hunter Jubal Early.

interesting little thing here, when nathan fillion, who played Mal in firefly, was on the show Drive, that show about the illegal car race across america, the bounty hunter was the cop after him...

If you like any of the actors in Firefly, many of them made appearances in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Which was also a really good show that got cancelled before it had a chance.

Actually, the episode is called "Objects in Space," but I totally agree with you about it being the best episode. And Drive was co-created by Tim Minear, who executive produced Firefly with Joss Whedon.

Welcome to the frighteningly enthusiastic universe of the Firefly fan, Brewmaniac. I look forward to your upcoming despondency over the cancellation of the show, followed by your revelatory viewing of Serenity, and then one last bout of anger towards the show's cancellation.

As your fragile emotional state recedes into a more stable "acceptance phase," please allow me to direct you to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off, Angel. The first two Joss Whedon shows are excellent in their own right, and lucky for you, all 12 combined seasons are easily accessable through Netflix.

See you in March or so!

Meh to Angel. I watched the whole thing, but if suffered from several rather serious problems: redundancy and what I call Babylon 5 syndrome, where the last season was a horrible mistake.

Spoiler: I'm still hearing things about the Serenity sequel about the second civil war and the emergence of a democracy amongst the worlds. Of course, our favorite characters would be playing a big part... but without Wash I'd probably end up bursting into tears every 2-3 minutes. It'd be nice to have Chiwetel Ejiofor back as "The Operative". He was astonishingly good in Serenity.

Will, I pray seriously that you are correct about a Serenity sequel, but I highly doubt it. Not to be pessimistic, but good things never seem to happen to my favorite shows (Firefly, Veronica Mars, Angel, Deadwood, Futurama, etc.) and when they do (Serenity) I feel like it's tempting the gods to ask for more or something.

But hey, nothing would make me happier than to be proved wrong.

There have been rumblings since Serenity, but they picked up a great deal since about a month and a half ago. I'm not sure why, but there's buzz growing. Joss has been taking some "me time" recently as I understand it (fatherhood), but that hardly means he's not doing anything. Back in 2006, Joss said that it would be unlikely, but shit so was Serenity. Frankly, I'd rather have them back on TV (BUT NOT ON FOX), but I'd be thanking my lucky stars if we got another feature length film. We all know they can make money. The DVD sales were astounding.

I hope you enjoy the upcoming Futurama movies, I know I'll be getting all of them on DVD.

Hell they could go straight-to-DVD if the studio is worried about marketing them and having them flop in theatre (which is what Serenity did unfortunately). This isn't the '80's straight-to-DVD doesn't mean that it is automatically crap anymore.

Everybody has forgotten to mention the (3) comics that tie up the main story arc from the series...

You know you are a serious series follower when you buy the comics to fill in the blanks

Excellent choices.

I would love to see another movie in the theater (just something about watching the object of your obsession with a big group of like minded fans...very Lord of the Rings-ish), but a straight to DVD movie would be fine indeed.

No, I think you know you are a serious follower when you read the horrible Serenity novelization.

i gotta say, i really really enjoyed the film, they did a great job with it. but now that wash and the shepard are dead, it just wouldn't be the same if they made more. unless zoe married mal (which would be wierd, so, maybe not) and they got a new shepard or a different character..., which would also be weird...

i feel the same way. i LOVED strange luck, so it didn't' last and you can't get it on dvd or anything. i LOVED The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne , now gone, and parker lewis can't lose which you can't get anywhere...

it's like they refuse to let the good ones continue....

another thing i found really nifty about that, is that if you download the 2 episodes of Drive that didn't air before they cancelled, one of them actually tells us that the cop's name is Jubal Early.
damn i loved that show.

and yes. fox screwed firefly over by switching the pilot away from first broadcasted episode. at least they knew well enough to let joss take the show to other companies, eventually universal, so that they could make serenity.
