Sue, I would want to know where my new job will be before choosing where I want to live.

Get the job first, even if you have a pretty good idea where you want to live. Once you have the job, you can choose your precise living location based on what kind of commute you'll have from there, or what public transit is available, or the nearest affordable neighborhood, or whatever.

In the meantime, when you're actually in Colorado looking for work, just rent by the week in a motel that advertises weekly or monthly rates.

Agreed, I'd go with the job first.

Like Rodney said, you can somewhat choose where you live based on where you work if you would prefer not to have a long commute.

Also, depending on the type of job you have and how much it pays, your income will likely help determine what you can afford each month when it comes to an apartment.

Most cities have job listings online via the newspaper websites. Or if you have a specific nationwide company you are looking at, then go to their site directly. Or jump on the temp bandwagon to check out a variety of jobs in the area and then choose one from there.

Another friend of mine, befriended a few people in the new city via im chat rooms and yahoo groups. Then stayed with a friend for a week while looking for a job and a place to live.

For sure, do the job first, then find a place. If you have to fly up for an interview, check out apartment complexes while you're there. If not, fly up anyway to check out apartment complexes. Go on the different rental sites to check out places before you go, just to get an idea of where you might want to look when you get there.
