Maxtor 250 GB HD $129.95

Hi all. I just wanted to pass this info on. compUSA has Maxtor 250 GB, 8MB cache, 7200RPM drives for $129.95 after $70 Instant rebate. (Not lame-ass mail in rebate, but instant rebate.) That's a pretty damn good price. I prefer Western Digital, but I have had several Maxtors and have never had a bad experience with them.

Yes we do But if you live in Salt Lake, we are all out at the moment. Your best bet is to order it off the website (they have a better stock of everything than stores do).

Oh, and tell the sales associate if you get it that you want TAP on it

Ok, I'll bite...What is TAP? And the compUSA site is sold out. I did a search from the site and all the stores around me still have them.

I saw this deal on one of the deal sites I go to, and it was sold out, so I printed up the web page and went to best buy.. they wouldnt give me the same price since there was no compusa within town, so they gave me 40 bucks off instead.. Which was good enough for me.. Now I have 530 GB's.. oh yeah! ha ha

Oh, and yeah.. what is TAP?

Damn. That rocks. I love Maxtors. The last time I upgraded. I tried the MaxBlast SW to trasnfer data and it worked so smoothly that I almost fainted.

IMHO, Maxtor is the best drive you can get.

I've used Western Digital and Maxtor pretty much exclusively. According to what I find using HDtach, the Maxtor is faster and more consistant accross the tracks.
Only problem is I've never had one that tolerate overclocking. Because of that I only use WD drives now. Still, that's the only reason I can see not to go with Maxtor. Nice stuff.

TAP (in reference to a hard drive) is a replacement plan. you can purchase it for a few dollars, and it covers accidental damage to the unit you purchase it on. So the hard drive takes a shit on you, you can take it back to any Comp USA and get a new one - over the counter swap. It doesn't get your info back, but at least you don't have to spend another $200 on a new hard drive.

And with Maxtor you'll need it too...

Personally I wouldn't get a Maxtor if my data depended on it... not after hearing all the horror stories and the advice my friend (who worked in a computer store) gave me to stear clear of Maxtors, as they kept coming back after a couple of years...
Plus the whole issue of the Maxtor HD (came with my pc) in my server with all my stuff on it dying on me, that traumatised me a bit...
It's Hitachi or Seagate for me...

Doesn't Hitachi make the IBM "Deathstars?"

From some other message board:

"The Deathstar monicker came from the problem where the heads would land on the platters, then clamps down. When the heads would start to move again, they'd pull off the lubrication coating with them and cause fine scratches. The latest Hitachi drives have been made not to do this, and there is a firmware update to fix the older IBM drives as well.

....

Hitachi/IBM have actually fixed the old Deathstar problem with a firmware upgrade. The read heads no longer "land" on the platters for an extended period of time. If the drive is idle but not powered down, the heads will move back and forth to prevent then from pausing in one place and eroding the platter lubricant over time."

hmmm... I never even knew about that problem... Google rocks

I'm not a huge Maxtor fan myself. They do come back a lot. I personally like Western Digital.

At the shop I work at I do see maxtor's failing the most (lots in the HP's) with IBM 40-60's coming in second (blip bleep anyone?) Seagates and WD's not so much but anything is possible when dealing with hard drives.

Crazy

As the lead technician for a local computer repair and upgrade company, I have to say that I see the most problems with Western Digital Hard drives, as well as Seagate. However these are with older hard drives... <20Gb type older hard drives. I have yet to start seeing any problems with HDs >20GB really. It is my personal belief that HD manufacturers have overcome the majority of the problems of the past that caused frequent HD failures, and pretty much any major brand you buy now will be reliable for a few years... and really, a few years is about the life I want out of a HD. I upgrade my own personal HD aobut every 2 years... and keep my old HDs as a backup with all my data intact.

so my suggestion... dont wait for your HD to go bad, replace them before they have a chance to.
