WinXP format reinstall questions

I want to format and reinstall WinXP, as my system has been giving me all kinds of errors lately. Now I'm not sure if I need my CD key to do this or not. So heres some questions for you geeks out there...

1) Is it possible to just do a recovery, booting from the Recovery CD-ROM I got from the place where I bought the computer from, without having the cd key?

2)If so, will this completely format my harddrive, and reinstall winxp?

Just so we are all on the same page, what i want to do is completely wipe the C:/ drive and reinstall XP(basically trying to make my HD look like it was when I first got my computer). I have never done a format before, so if there is something Im missing, let me know....

yes, if you do the restore cd, it will re-install everything just like it came when you first booted it up.

it would format the entire drive, and re-install the original operating system.

or..........you could manually format the hardrive in dos and re-install xp (if you have a cd and a cdkey)

you shouldnt.

the restore cd is basically an image of your hardrive was in the beginning.

so it basically copies the stuff back on there (at least that's my understanding, anyone wanna clarify on this?)

Ive seen alot different kinds of restore disks. Some wont format the HD, they just copy system files. They suck. Then their is the one that will format.

Restore disks dont normally ask for the key. But some do. Windows install disks will generally need a key.

A little more info, like brand, might help me give you more info then that.

If all else fails, a local PC shop will prolly do it for ya for less then 50 bucks. I have to recommend you help a lowly PC tech feed his family.

Well, I got my system from MDG Computers, and looking on the CD, the only relavent info on it is this :

" The software included on this Recovery CD-ROM was pre-installed on your hard drive at the factory and may only be used for backup and recovery of your MDG computer system."

This is some more info but its just legal mumbo jumbo.

Your restore disc might have several options for restore/recovery action.
Chances are that it will give you a partial and full restore option. Partial restores dont format the drive and simply copy some system files and settings like VeXteR said above.
A full restore should typically involve a format and reinstall. This should set your stuff so it was like it was when you first bought the computer. This is what youre looking for. Just pop the disc in and see what options it gives you. If the company is good about their discs, it should explain what its going to do.
And no, you shouldnt need a key if youre using this method. If youre prompted for one (which would be unusual), then call MDG and ask for one. You might want to have your invoice ready.

your key should be on a sticker on the side of your computer. if it's not then it's possible that it's still on the OEM pamphlets.

If you don't have either of them, then I'm afraid you are talking about warez which is a taboo subject here on the TFP.

Why the heck would you purchase a MDG computer in the first place. They have the worst products, and they substitute advertised parts with cheaper components.

They advertise outdated system with inferior parts to newbie computer buyers.

Shame on that company and what it represents.

Why not just call/email them and ask if youll need the cd key when you run the restore disk. they should know how their disk works
