Any RX-8 Owners on the board?
Who owns an RX-8 and what is the real poop on engine warming? About the only concern I have is cold weather starting and engine warming. From what I am finding, it is important to bring the engine temperature up every time you start the engine, even to just move it in the driveway to get another vehicle out.
I was going to register and post this question on an RX-8 forum, but thought I'd get a less biased reply here.

I'm putting the RX-8 project on hold anyway. I still like them and still want one, but the closest Mazda dealer to me (60 miles away) dropped the ball on this one. When I get back from vacation I'll go another 24 miles perhaps.
I'm kinda looking at Mitsubishi Eclipses now too. The Eclipse is lower priced and may be less trouble.

My neighbors a few doors down, youngish guy in his late 20's and his wife, they've owned their RX-8 for about two years now, they love it. They keep saying they'll bring it to one of the track days I go to, but so far no go.
I think the Eclipse is nice too, though based on what I hear and read it's not nearly as much of a sports car feel as the RX-8. But it is a nice sporty car nonetheless. I bought a new Eclipse back in 1990, a GS-T and with that turbo that thing was quite peppy and handled surprisingly well; traded it in with almost 160k relatively trouble free miles when I got my '95 Supra. I don't really know much about the new Eclipse. |

New Eclipses are getting terrible reviews, especially by Consumer Reports. I would stay away.
If you are looking for a sports car, the RX-8 isn't really that fast. I've heard it handles well, and "feels" like a sports car when you are in it, but it doesn't have enough power to make me consider it a nice purchase. Any reason in particular you want an RX-8 or Eclipse? If you want a nice bargain on a sports car, go for a 2005 GTO. 400 horsepower monster sled. I've found them in Virginia for $22,000 with <15,000 miles. Now that part is biased. I love the new GTOs (and am one of the few).

I've not gotten serious enough yet about an Eclipse to read too many reviews. But the Mitsubishis I've had in the past weren't bad cars.
And an Eclipse is just something I came to think about after giving up on my Mazda dealer. When it is all said and done, I can see me finding another dealer somewhere and maybe trying to make adeal on the RX-8 again. Nevertheless, I'll likely test drive an Eclipse, an S2000, a Saturn Sky and maybe a Pontiac Solstice before I do anything.

I have a 2004 RX-8 with 57k+ miles on it. I am the original owner. When it first came out, there were some software bugs, but in the last few years, I have had no problems with it (cold) starting. You cannot turn the car on to move it and turn it off it again. You must let it warm up, you can just leave it running, no need to drive it a certain distance. When the car warms up, the engine runs at 1500 rpm, once it goes down to 1000 rpm you can turn it off. It may take a couple of minutes. Having an RX-8, I love just driving though, so this was never a problem for me. I do live in the SF Bay Area, so no real cold days/nights here, however. I must say, the weight and balance of the car is phenomenal. I have been driving the family's G35 lately and it feels so much heavier. The added power does not seem to make up for its size to me. Two caveats about the RX-8: In town driving will give you gas mileage averaging 15 miles/gallon maybe (This car likes to drive at 70+ mph). Also, I to get new tires just about every 15k mi, no matter the brand or rating.

I wound up getting an 8 back in April. I got an '06 Shinka that was left over. So far I love it. It isn't a daily driver so the gas mileage doesn't bug me. This car is the most fun I've ever had with my clothes on.
