I am heading to San Fran for Macworld January 3 - 10th. Where should I eat at?
I have never been out west, so I have no clue what is going to be going on. I am just a little midwestern boy. Don't wanna just live off McDonalds and Taco Bell like I do here.

Can't tell you many precise restaurants, because it's been so long since I lived there. But, you're going to see more variety of Chinese/Asian restaurants than you ever saw in your life, guaranteed; dim sum, too. Cantonese, Szechuan, Mandarin, Hong Kong, plus Thai, Vietnamese and Cambodian (definitely try Cambodian). Ask around for good ones.
Excellent Mexican, Salvadorean, and other food in the Mission, too, and cheap. Ask where the best taquerias are. If La Cumbre on Valencia is still there (I hear it is), go there for burritos. And buy one of their t-shirts. Best souvenir of SF there is. When you see one, you'll know why. There are a lot of Mexican broiled chicken joints, too, and if you've never had that you should try it. I went to the Stinking Rose when I was there. It's a garlic themed restaurant, really good if you like garlic and don't mind smelling like it when you leave the place.

I cant remember the name of it but there was an italian/seafood place that was the best. Small setting and the italian waiters were flirting like crazy with all the women, sitting on their laps and just cutting up. The Italian seafood mix out there is great.

If you are near Chinatown, try this.
Walk up to anyone and ask them where House of Nanking is. Trust me, somebody will know. It's a really popular place, the line stretches out the door constently. Don't worry, you aren't going to eat there. When you get to House of Nanking, pause. Look at the line for a bit and smile knowingly. Then walk over to the next resturant on the right called... Chef Jia's ... this place is awesome. No line, you'll have your food in five minutes. Might I recommend the Honey Chili Chicken? It's amazing. Trust me, you'll thank me later. |

House of Nanking is pretty good, too! Best hot and sour soup in the city!
If you want to try spicy chinese food, try Henry's Hunan. There's one just a few blocks from the Moscone Center at 110 Natoma. There's a good Cantonese dim sum place also near Moscone called "Canton". For a real old fashioned lunch with an unbeatable view, try Red's Java House right on the Bay just south of the Bay Bridge. It's maybe a 10 minute walk from Moscone. Nothing fancy: their burger is just a beef patty or two on a fresh sourdough french roll with maybe a few bits of onion scattered on it. But a double burger, fries and a beer's only about 4 bucks. When you're done, walk out to the end of the pier and watch the tugboats go by under the Bay Bridge. There's a Vietnamese greasy spoon diner just off of Market Street at around 5th or 6th that makes the best Vietnamese egg rolls you'll ever taste. Beware, though, that's not the best part of town although it's only 5 or 6 blocks from Moscone. If you want to get really exotic, there's a great Burmese restaurant called Mandalay, way out on California street at about 6th Avenue. For authentic Japanese noodles, try Mifune in Japantown. It's owned by a japanese family whose other restaurants are all in Japan. For Pakistani food (it's good, trust me), try Shalimar or Nan 'N Curry: each of the two has brances downtown or in the Tenderloin. There's a good Afgani restaurant called "Helmand" on Broadway street that's owned by the brother of the President of Afganistan. That section of Broadway is where all the famous titty bars are, and it's also right next to chinatown. For great bbq, try Flint's or KC BBQ in the East Bay. Have fun! |

Try U-lee on Hyde and Jackson, when you take the cablecar feom fishermans warf to market, sto at the intersection and buy the cheapest and most popular, the cable car operator should know where ir is. no frills so don't impress anyone. continue to the warf and stop at the buena vista cafe and have an irish coffe, lots of people gather at one of the oldest abrs in town. The cable car also goes by the intersection of Hyde and Lombard, the crooked street. hope for nice weather.

Forgot that the little italy area has great food, Columbus and Broadway, night clubs on the x rated domain. is a good place to walk towards the warf and find small italian restaurants with great food. Pier 39, and the fishermans warf have tons of small places. Ice cream at the Ghiraradelli factory at the warf. Mexican food at the mission but a lot harder to get to and the area not as nice for walking around. if you rent a car go to sausalito, accross the golden gate, exit at the first exit and that is the vista point. get back on the road and exit immediately to the right, make an immeadiat left and go under the freeway and on to the headlands, great views of the city anf the gg bridge. then go under the freeway and doen the road into sausalito for dinner. back to sfco for drink at the numerous bars on Union street, grat places lots of youth. Those days were fun

I had the osso bucco there and it was fantastic. I also enjoyed Scoma's on a previous trip. Don't forget to have an Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista.

Michaelangelo's in North Beach, The Slow Club and Slanted Door in the Mission, Chez Papa, Chez Maman, and Baraka in Potrero Hill. High end...Jadiniere, Gary Danko's (1 month list so your too late for that one), Boulevard, way too many to list really. San Francisco has better food than any other city, yes, even NY. Try to stay away for the hard core tourist areas. The city is made for tourists, but the best parts of the city aren't where the tourists are...
Great live music at the Bottom of the Hill in Potrero Hill. I have seen some very big name bands in that little place.

If you're into pasta try Pasta Promadoro (sp?) If you do go YOU MUST try the spinach dip. Though I think it's a little pricey there, I'm not sure though, I might have it confused with another pasta restaurant.
I can't remember where it is though. It's been a few years since I've been in San Fran |
