recovering from Injury
Anyone who takes their fitness and their bodies seriously- really hates to be injured. Personally, my semi serious injury catalouge is as follows: both ankles sprained numerous occasions, pretty bad Aductus tendonitis, broken nose and lots of scrapes cuts and bruises. I think ive been pretty lucky considering.
My main tip for recovering from injury besides rest and good nutrition, is plenty of low impact exercise like walking. Massage is also really good. What are your experiences with injury? |

First of all, I'd love to know what kind of physical activity you're doing. Jeez, what a laundry list.
Myself, I mainly lift weights in the gym; been about 20 years now. I had what I thought was a rotator cuff problem, but I changed the way I exercised and it eventually backed off (so it probably wasn't rotator). Also, lots of tennis elbow from biceps curls done wrong. The cure there was to switch to hammer curls for a few months, which still work your arms but spare your elbow. I have a hinky back, from heredity, and I've put it out a few times with weight training and bicycling. But I took up some light yoga a few years ago, and the stretching has pretty much quieted my back down. I now also know that, anytime I feel like I've strained any muscle, even if it doesn't feel too bad, I should go home and ice the sucker. If I do, the problem goes away overnight. If I don't, I might wake up with a painfully tight muscle the next day and spend a few days after that waiting for it to lax out. |

Rodney,
Yeah ice and stretching are magical. I try to ice myself whebever im unsure of how the body is coping with a strain.

I torqued my knee really badly training for bike races, but it has since gotten better with some work and some different pedals on my bike (I use speedplay now, for those of you who are interested).
Broke a collarbone playing Ultimate, but aside from that I only get pulls and cramps. Even with my crashes Ive managed to bounce rather than break. |

Doing things gently. High impact without low impact warm-ups equals high impact injury. With the winter months setting in on the East Coast I need to make sure that my training partners warm up very well. After an injury to my right shoulder I had to change my training regimen, and realize that I couldn't do the things I used to do right after. I think its all behavior modification. If it hurts, don't do it. And I agree with the massage advice. It works wonders.
