Grad school app / statement of purpose
I'm applying to study audiology at a couple of different schools. One of the things that each requires is a one-page letter that they are calling a statement of purpose. I hear from faculty that the purpose of this is really a writing sample. I have no idea what to put in this, as I am undecided in any sort of specialization inside the field yet. Do any of you have any experience with these that you can use to direct me?

I don't think that they'd expect you to have your specialization decided already, so if you're not sure about that just don't write about it.
Of all fields you could go into, why audiology? How does the field appeal to you? Do you have an idea of what careers in the field are like and why would you enjoy them? What exposure, if any, do you have in the field? Do you know anyone, and if so, how has their experience motivated you? I imagine answering these questions would lead you towards a nice one-page letter. Good luck! |

I just finished writing up my own statement of purpose for grad school.
Convey your enthusiasm about your field of study. Tell your story. Tell them why you have chosen it. Tell them what you intend to do with the knowledge you will gain. Talk about any experience you have, especially those that made you want to go into the field. Tell them what you can do for them. Above all, be enthusiastic. I know.. its hard to convey 'enthusiasm', but they want that. Its better to write down any areas within the field that interest you. You can always change that later, you probably will, as you get to know more about it. Do some research, there must be some that interest you more. Perhaps you can say that although you interested in this and this, you are always open to new ideas...etc ..etc... |
