Alberta Prosperity Cheques
Hey all you fellow Albertans, what are you planning on doing with the cheque? You putting it into savings? Paying bills? Or are you reinvesting it back into the economy?
I was thinking about putting it into my school fund, but I thought more about it and I really feel like blowing it all right away. I have been thinking about getting this ridiculously huge star wars lego set. It has over 3000 pieces and aparently takes over 10 hours to make. I have always loved lego and figured this would be one sweet thing to get. I also know a guy that works at a store selling them so I can get a decent discount on one. The rest of the money I will put towards a water filter for packpacking. Here is a linky of the image cause I don't think I can post pictures in here. http://cache.lego.com/images/shop/pr...00-XX-13-1.jpg |

I want to use my $$$ to set up a community forum around my neighborhood and invite everyone to it. It'll have a mini-economy based on doing favors for other people- shoveling walks or the like.
heh I don't really know how to go about it though

Wow, thats awesome skier! I feel like a jerk for wanting to spend the money on me now. For some reason this money doesnt feel earned, so I kinda just want to spend it all on crap that doesn't matter. But the money I earn with my job I use for school, give a portion of it to my Church, stuff like that. I have a strange sense of things though, I think my brain is damaged

No, I see it the same way.
I think the money would have done a lot more good all together. Maybe explore alternative energy (hah) or reduce our reliance on primary/resource industry. So I figured if I could do something with the money that helped my community, it would be the next best thing. Plus I don't think that it'll cost much to create and maintain a small internet forum.

Well.... I think that I'm going to save my money until my cruise and then buy stuff for my girlfriend. Apparently theres one island that gets diamonds rather cheap. I also need to figure out a way to get them back into Canada.

School books. Call it an investment into my education. As a percentage of the resources, I think 400 per albertan is relativly insignificant; I hope it does make a few more people appreciate being Albertan and being part of a prosperous economy.

School of corse.
mind you if the money we'd be given had been out back into education i wouldn't have the problem of not being able to pay tuition. grumblegrumble. If I were in a more stable financial situation I'd blow it all on clothes and stuff, from our discussions in sociology class I get the feeling that's what the government is counting on, people putting that money back into the Alberta economy |

Wow, the Klein government is actually talking about a second round of prosperity cheques. I guess that the vast criticism over the first round had a really profound impact.
Thanks again Ralph for flushing our financial windfall down the toilet. I certainly look forward to watching the news story about the collapsing elementry school roof again tonight.

There was criticism. I don't know if it was vast. I personally think that the majority of people, regardless of if they admit it or not, like to have the cheques. I don't claim that every aspect of society has suffcient funding, but prosperity cheques are more in line with the conservative platform for which the vast majority of Albertans voted for. While part of me agrees, in principle, with dumping the money into education, a bigger part believes that "vast sums + bueracracy = waste". I may as well waste it on myself than have someone else waste it somewhere else.
I'm certain that there are many charities that were thankfull that you, and other leftwing albertans donated your first $400, and they will be thankful again when you donate your next. Alright, I admit that that was a little trollish, but there is so much hypocrisy inherent in everyone that accepts and spends the cheques, then complains that they got one in the first place. Forget about the fact that schools are getting shut down, universities are turning away applicants and the standard commute seems to increase by five minutes every year. I'm irritated by the fact that the Alberta mayors have said that they're essentially getting the shaft when it comes to spreading the wealth. Knowing that the populous is now flush with new funds the logical choice will be to increase taxes. The prosperity cheques are temporary, tax increases are essentially permanent. I guess that I wish a more permenant standard of living increase was implemented.

Man we don't get prosperity cheques in the NWT. Or prosperity. Or dignity for that matter. Yet all our jobs are filled by albertans while us born and raised NWT'ers get squat.
Man just annex us and send us some cheques or stop using us to claim the tax returns.... /bitter at albertans

This is an intresting thread for an American. One, these "prosperity checks" are an intresting concept. Two, I didnt realize that Ontario seems to be the whipping boy for the rest of the provinces. I guess that has to do with their pop size and the fact that they hold the most votes come election time. Intresting.

I found it funny when I heard of an Albertain who complained about the cheque.
"I feel the money would have been better spent on schools and health care..." Canadians really are a bunch of commies, ain't we?

Update. I didnt buy that giant lego I wanted! I realised that would be a complete waste of money. I ended up spedning it on groceries and gas and stuff like that. Figured I would use it as spending money so I could save my work paychecks for school.
