iTunes and virtual drives
So the story goes, I have a project I'm going to undertake soon. I plan on ripping a shitton of CDs but where I'm going to be ripping them doesn't have internet so I can't get the id3 tags. I usually use iTunes to rip CDs.
The problem is I'm using CDClone and trying to use a virtual CDrom drive to rip the cd image to my harddrive once i have the internet again (in the future after the ripping endeavour) to rip them and get all the track names. The problem is iTunes doesn't seem to be working with virtual drives. so the solutions I see are: I can use Audiograbber instead and suffer the lower quality. Someone can help me figure out why iTunes isn't seeing virtual drives or someone can direct me towards the .dll that is the iTunes encoder so I can direct audiograbber to the iTunes encoder and then rip them. any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help guys.

I'm not too sure about the exact steps to do it, but you should be able to download a copy of the FreeDB database (CD lookup, etc.) and then do lookups offline. I'm not sure about the virtual drives issue - I tend to use CDex to rip my CDs. It's a great piece of freeware software and supports local CD lookups (such as a copy of the FreeDB database), as well as all kinds of encoding options.

I'm not sure if this helps you, but I just saw a similar question on iPodlounge:

Don't forget to go back and make sure the tags work for you; for instance, I always change the Genre to work with my own classification system.

I have another thought for you. In the original post, it looks like you were intending to make CD images, then rip them later, so I'm assuming that you have a bunch of hard drive space available. If that's the case, I'd recommend doing the imports to Apple Lossless format (Edit - Preferences - Importing); it should process 2-3 times as fast as AAC or MP3 encoding. You should also set (Edit - Preferences - General) the CD insert preference to "Import Songs and Eject", which will save you a bunch of keypresses.
Then, when you get tired of sticking CDs in your computer and plan to take a break, sort your playlist by "Kind", select all the Apple Lossless files, change your encoding method to whatever method you want, and select (Advanced - Convert...) to reencode, and walk away. This might be an overnight process, depending on how many CDs you ripped. Finally, delete all the original Apple Lossless files while in iTunes, and when it asks, have it delete the songs from your hard drive as well.
